We found something when we were testing the Minisforum UM790 Pro alongside the Beelink GTR7 and GTR7 Pro that we were not expecting. This new mini PC uses the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS along with a host of generational improvements over the UM690 to make something that we were not expecting.

Good buy as a Bare bones. I would always swap out the manufacturer's SSD anyway, as they are about 40% slower than a cheap x4 stick. Shame you didn't test it in a RAID setup - it was almost like Minisforum wanted you to - but great review!

I've had mine for about a month now. It is fantastic! It is TINY. Highly recommended. It replaces a 2 yr old MinisForum HX90 Barebones, 5900HX CPU. I got this one factory. The power draw is minimal. I gladly trade a little performance for much less heat. It is mounted on a wall with the HX90 VESA mount. Due to initial cabling as it replaced a HX90, the rear fan was pointed down. While the fan air movement was virtually silent, the actual fan bearing was whizzing at a high frequency which was mildly annoying. I would only hear it when my head was turned in a particular direction playing games in 4K. I rerouted the cable and the fan is pointed up. I never hear the fan anymore. I also don't use 4K anymore as it makes no noticeable difference. Many games act weirdly at 4K also i.e. HUD resize, too small text, etc.

I am loving all these mini pc companies and their products. I personally run 2 BeeLink SEi12 for my kubernetes server now after years of running it on my pi cluster. Way better performance and less problems with arm. If they ever make a NAS mini pc product capable of supporting up to 6x 3.5" HDD and 2x SSD, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Is there any GaN battery brick that’s compatible with the UM790? I’d love a usb-c “ups”-like setup where windows can monitor the battery level and auto-shutdown when the battery level is low. I’m scared of consumer ssds because they lack PLP that enterprise ssds have, meaning that at-rest data can get corrupted during sudden power loss.

Love that the cmos reset button doesn't look like a short mishap away from a bad time, would have been nice to have at least one of the usb4 ports on the back, while I can see some use cases for having it on the front just seems counterproductive for a clean look that many of these are going for as well as counterintuitive when you consider most people expect to find things relating to power and extensions on the rear of the case, either way minor gripes aside love the IO on offer and looks like it would be a great system for on the go casual gamers and homlab servers even if it has one network port itself.

It's almost perfect for me. The only thing that really irks me is not having 10GbE integrated. It's got blazing fast internal storage, but would then be limited for network transfers by that 2.5GbE port, unless I buy another dongle. Seriously...come on! Marvell has great AQC113 chips and I'd pay extra for this capability. Yes, they usually use more power than 2.5GbE chips (more heat), but not everybody is stuck on Cat5e networks. I'd also prefer the USB4 ports to be on the back with the HDMI ports, having all the display outputs on one side and then 2 USB-A on the front instead, but that's a minor thing.
@AB-yt4hd

They should put a sfp+ cage with the AQC113. You can then choose between 2.5G, 10G, fiber or copper.

Thank you very much for this video presentation. It could not have been more timely as my unit just arrived yesterday. I ordered mine with 64GB RAM , 1TB SSD and Windows 11 Pro. My immediate first impression, I love it!! This will become my main production machine. Currently I am using an ASUS ROG F15 Dash TUF, closed lid and connected to my external LG 40" Ultrawide 4K monitor as my main system. That also works just super. A couple caveats I have noticed up front. When I connect my LG monitor to the UM790, I noticed I only get 30Hz refresh. That is UNacceptable. I presume I would / could get better over the USB4 ports, but hey, are these not HDMI v2.1 ports? Are they not supposed to support up to 60Hz even at 8K? Now, I don't know if the cable makes the difference as I am using one of my own HDMI cables I have laying around rather than the cable that came shipped with the kit. Do HDMI cables have rated variations (i.e., v2.1 compatible) similar in the way there are differences between Thunderbolt 4 active, Passive, and plain vanilla USB-C cables? The other caveat I noticed is that when I attempted to upgrade my Windows 11 Pro to the latest Windows Insider Preview Build (#23493) on two attempts now it hangs at 64% and I had to resort back to the previous installation as they shipped it. I wonder if that has something to do with this being an AMD vs Intel processor. Cheers, Jerry / Tokyo.
@DeltaSierra426
@DeltaSierra426 9 місяців тому
I know that DisplayPort cables can have official ratings from VESA. I'm not sure about HDMI. I've seen mixed thoughts on this that cables don't truly have a rating and rather it depends on their quality, but that's can't of the say same in that the rating is supposed to assert a minimum quality level. I'd just say just stick to reputable names and avoid the random Amazon ones that claim HDMI 2.1 for next to nothing as there are plenty of fakes on the market. Yes, though, I'd 100% try another HDMI cable. There's also a place in Windows to change the refresh rate and a place in AMD Adrenaline graphics software, so you might verify if 30 Hz is actual max or just defaulted to and can be set higher. As for Windows 11, I'd say not necessarily that it has an AMD processor but that the Phoenix APU is so new, yes, it could be a driver issue or something of the like. If only MS made it more straightforward to review an error log when something like that happens to know for sure.

The one thing i'd change about this design, is move 2 of the type A ports to the front, and the type C ports to the back. Type A on the front is great for wireless accessories like mice and headsets and type C on the back allows for a cleaner look. Addtionally, if this saves enough space, it might allow for a second network port, though unless this came with a Ryzen 3, it would be overkill to use this as a router, unless youre doing some serious caching with a 10G network port and 2x NVMe.

I think it should be a blend of both A and C on both front and back. Why? Could get any type of thumbdrive and want easy front access. USB-C on the rear is critical if you want to semi-permanently attach an external HDD or other peripheral and want it tucked away on the back of your desk not the front.

@ServeTheHome I have 3 of the previous Gen UM690s and noticed a peculiarity with the rear USB ports, although all spec'd as USB3.2, the bottom 2x USB ports between the HDMI and the case edge were running at slower speeds than the 2 usb ports between the HDMI and Eth port. The difference was huge, using an astrophotography camera, the fast ports were getting 130fps capture rates and the slower ports were only getting 10FPS. Hopefully this is just a firmware or driver issue, and hopefully doesn't impact the new models.

It would be interesting because the RAM is also used as graphics memory, and if you buy the barebones version and use faster RAM, for example DDR5-5600, CL40-40-40, the graphics performance could be a lot better. The important question would be whether the UM790 pro with DDR5-5600, CL40-40-40 runs stably or not?

Barebones is key. I would never buy something like this without choosing my own SSD and RAM, especially since in a device with only 2 NVME slots I would go 4TB in both.

Just bought the barebones version. Still waiting for delivery. I had to communicate on Skype because my email didn't attach itself to the orignal order, although I did enter my mobile number which should allow me to get shipping and delivery updates. I have no idea when it is due to arrive. Will have to chase on Skype as I've had no communication via email, although they have added my email to the order.

No 10GE RJ-45 ports is a bummer for me. 2.5G is nice, but not all network switch support that. I am the realm of 10GE network and want 10GE on my devices (and no, I wont use USB-4/C for that for the numerous problems they posed to wired networks).

@ServeTheHomVideo Silly question, any support onboard for ECC memory?
@ServeTheHomeVideo
@ServeTheHomeVideo 10 місяців тому
We did not confirm ECC working beyond the on-chip ECC for DDR5 that is handled by the modules (this is not the same as ECC SODIMMs to be clear.)
@kwinzman
@kwinzman 9 місяців тому
@@ServeTheHomeVideo You should get a pair of real DDR5 ECC SO-DIMMs and include testing with those in any future SFF review that you do! Does it accept it, is it recognized as error detecting and error correcting according to the OS. Thanks in advance!

The only reason igot the beelink gtr7 pro is the 64w tdp but adjustable. Been running mine at 90w(this isnt from the wall but the sppt setting in the bios, not everyone has this and many other bios settings tho, might be a pro only setting) and its basically a r7 7700 so be careful looking at scores my beelink is conflating the avg 7940hs scores. I can even run 6400mhz ram.

Would like to see a head-to-head between: Minisforum UM790 Pro GMKTech NucBox K4 Beelink GTR7 All with the R9 7940HS (8C/16T, Radeon 780M), 32GB 1TB. Would like to see head-to-head performance, power draw, heat, noise, gaming performance, integrated ports, do they come with Windows pre-installed, etc. And general bang for the buck? They all seem pretty comparable on basic specs: proc/mem/NVMe, etc. Just wondering on the differences, and haven't seen any of them in a head-to-head, tear-down, etc. I'm debating buying one or more of this style of mini-PC to just do stuff like crunching PrimeGrid tasks, and maybe some light gaming. Debating if these will be sufficient for the purpose, or if the integrated graphics, "mobile"-esque chips will be a bottleneck vs. a full PC with dedicated graphics? Or if the bang-for-the-buck is sufficient for the trade-offs.

Did you try sticking the Mushkin 48GB SODIMMs from the HP TMM box onto the Ryzen boxes just to see what would happen? The memory controller on the Rembrandt/Phoenixes are said to be limited to 32GB SODIMMs, but AMD are usually pretty good when it comes to being a bit over-spec.

I was able to run the NPB7 with 2 x 48 GB Mushkins. Also, I read two guys made the same successfully experimentation with both UM690 and UM773 Lite. So, I think the UM790 Pro should be also compatible.

Your review states that you have to remove the screws, where as Level1Techs review stated that the bottom just snaps on. Can anyone confirm whether this is a toolless case or not?
@ScratchingTheGreen

First, you have to remove the taped feet, undo the 4 screws (under the taped feet), then use a strong fingernail/soft prytool to unsnap the bottom cover.
