I don't mind a little jank if the story and characters are interesting, it could even add the fun, but they just aren't. Seems like they rushed the screenplay, filming and postproduction. The script feels like it needs 3 more drafts to get it right.

Totally agreed. The westernised Netflix one is typically Hollywood style sci-fi trying hard to add feelings but really hollow. The Chinese one offers a far more natural in storytelling trying why professor Ye invited the aliens and the factions within her organisation towards the alien civilisation . Thus the thought provoking effect of this story goes beyond the sci-fi genre inviting watchers to ponder what do you make of the existence of humans on this blue planet. Really hoping that the Chinese continue to make the rest of the trilogy in tv series soon and complete the journey.

I read the first book and let me just say if the Three Body show (Chinese) is like the book, I'm not a fan already. I feel characters building in the book is horrible. Really liked the characters in the show tho!

Chinese (Tencent WeTv) version is more faithful to the novel than Netflix. But for western audience, it would be a pain in the a$s to watch 30 episodes or 22 hours in total and read the subtitle at the same time. If you curious, I recommend to G00gIe "Three Body Problem Disembiggened". Fans have shortened the Chinese version into 6 hours of 3 episodes without throwing the core out.

I have the same thoughts about the English subtitles. I'm a fast reader but sometimes I'm missing some of the translation.

@@antm64 Yes, they are badly paced. I don't know how accurate the actual translations are, but I suspect whoever transcribed it for the screen probably wasn't an English speaker and didn't allow enough time between subtitles for the viewer to always be able to read them before they disappeared. My only advice is to stay sharp and be ready for instant speed reading! Enjoy the show. It is very good despite the subtitles.

I agree as well. The subtitles were very quick and not completely accurate to the actual dialog. But not as bad as some other foreign language films.

I watched the chinese version last year...I am thinking whether I should watch the netflix version...I have read the comments, it looks like netflix version is also good...but man these shows eat up so much time..

Although not entirely trash, I really didnt care for the Netflix version whereas the Tencent version really made me think and made me love going into the science and philosophy and stuff. If you want that, the Netflix version has none of that. It only has the big moments from the story, without any of the suspense or buildup from the Tencent version.

The purpose of the title is to sell the book. Publisher's usually change book titles to something that makes sense in the target language rather than rely on literal translations which can sometimes be...problematic.

It has nothing to do with how Westerners think about China. It can't be filmed in China since netflix is banned there and the production of episodes will be extremely difficult under constant censorship and watchful eyes from the government.

@DimensionalThoughtsOfficial as a fan of the Franchise, loved watching it (still disappointed in a lot of things), but non fans felt it was badly paced, many things seemed confusing (as someone who doesn't know the plot or other details) and it didn't end satisfactory

Netflix's English adaptation contract with Yoozoo group does not allow Netflix to adapt the book accurately. This is on Yoozoo group who sold Netlfix the adaptation rights. When 2 adaptations are released so close to each other, it's understandable Tencent got the right to adapt it accurately because it is their own China's unique story. They do not want an American company doing the same thing.

Hey there, this is a great analysis and critique of some of the issues regarding taking away the Chinese sociocultural context in the modern segments of the series. I am making a video about certain criticisms of the different versions of the show, and would love to possibly include some analysis inspired by yours if you are ok with that! It is so valid that the system where someone is nurtured in affects their ideology and beliefs, and I am also curious to see how they will make a South Asian-British character channel the motivations that a Chinese character did. In Netflix, the discussion between him and his father at the dinner table gave us some initial insight, since his father is an immigrant who came to a country dominated by another race. Although the historical contexts are definitely different, I think this is a possible interesting perspective - bringing in the child of an immigrant perspective that could possibly influence his subsequent idea of loyalty vs. disloyalty, and the entire human race; I do want to say that, either way, this character is unique, and the way upbringings and ideologies are shaped are also unique - this is by no means a generalization of any groups of the people I mentioned above. I noticed this as well, probably because the US is in the middle of it's own cultural revolution to some degree and Media companies are at the forefront of it. When I started reading the book a few weeks ago, all I could think of is how the Wests obsession with Equity and Critical Theory echoes the 1960 cultural revolution. US media entities are not allowed to critique the outcome fo that philosophy to its logical and historical conclusion.

@@ccmzadv4879 Netflix had no problems portraying the chaos of the Cultural Revolution though. Netflix only erased the 2000s Chinese setting that represented the more optimistic and progressive China, and kept the chaos of the 1970s China. It was China's Tencent version that erased the Cultural Revolution scenes. So if it was due to an agenda of replicating the cultural revolution, then Netflix would've done the exact opposite of what they did here - they would have erased the Cultural Revolution scenes.

The Netflix version is like a summary and cuts all the suspense and buildup, so basically you'll be spoon-fed what's happening in the story. In the Tencent version, you can take time to try and figure out what's happening yourself

The sophons are my favorite part in Three Body Problem as well - have you read up to Death's End? That book was absolutely insane, and I'm sure you will love it/loved it if you wanted more about the dimensions :)

Interestingly, the constant emotional moments is what made me dislike the Netflix version. While these moments aren't problematic on their own, they took away time and attention from the crisis of science that was going on around the world, or what's supposed to be an extremely important plot point of the story. In other words, Netflix made scientists suiciding feel like something that was just happening in the background instead of something that actually matters in the story.

I felt the total opposite - I didn't feel very emotional at all with the Netflix version whereas the Tencent version made me cry multiple times. Just because the Chinese version doesn't have hugging or kissing doesn't mean it is a lack of love - it's a cultural thing. The Chinese aren't in your face with their emotions - they're more reserved.

@@MM-qt2pc I found it quite bizarre that as a father he doesn't even ever kiss or hug his daughter or wife in the Chinese version, a simple hug or kiss on the head or cheek is still being reserved, I saw none of that. As a father of a young daughter I find it quite strange to not hug your children.

@@fiddlestickzmuzik This is the way Chinese family members interact with each other, not using too much body language. The care for family members is reflected in every aspect of life, and hugging is not the only way to express love.

Sadly the turkey scientist analogy is absent from the netflix version.

The problem with the Netflix version isn't that it's "woke", it's that it is an incoherent retelling of the key moments of the 1st book

​@@ih8people 1) Characters being "edgy" isn't a valid criticism and frankly makes you lose a lot of credibility because you can't actually vocalize your issue without relegating to obscure nonsense. Makes it seem like you are not reviewing the show in good faith. I'm not sure whether you are or not, but keep that in mind. 2) Relationship drama and Augustine throwing a tantrum are 10x more character development than anyone in the Tencent series (or frankly the book) even gets. The 3 body problem (novel) might be one of the most impressive books I have ever read in terms of its ability to introduce brilliant science and philosophical arguments. However, it is one of the most poorly written, dry, and lifeless books when it comes to creating an actual livable narrative and world. I genuinely believe the entire Rememberance of the Earth's past would be better to consume as a wiki rather than a series of novels. So the fact that someone was able to take a frankly unadaptable story and actually populate it with likable and realistic characters is amazing to me. 3) More detail does not always equal better. We've all seen movies that drag on and could use a good edit- that's because the way and progression in which important events are presented incredibly important in creating something captivating. I don't know anyone who would actually prefer the Tencent version over the Netflix one- if they haven't read the books. Reminds me of how Tolkein hardcore fans hated Fellowship of the Ring because it made too many changes from the book- and then it won like 50 oscars and is one of the most revered movies of all time. That movie would have to be 2 times longer to actually fit every scene from the book and would undoubtedly be worse off for it. Like I said, the Tencent version is definitely a more faithful adaption, but definitely not a better overall product in terms of entertainment. Oh and those 10 episodes of Ye Wenijes past were grossly misrepresented because of communist China's inability to allow a shred of self criticism. That is a gross contamination of what is one of the core elements of the story and frankly inexcusable. Also you did not need to spend 10 episodes for that. it was completely unnecessary and illustrates one of the biggest problems with the show- it dragged and dragged and dragged.

I had to adjust too. We watched the Tencent series with my wife who watches a lot of Korean series, and she told me it's the same there. I figured it's just a cultural thing in those countries, same as those weird last minutes of every Tencent episode where characters just stare at each other and then it cuts to a slideshow with some music on the background. That said, I liked the CCP-approved version much-much more despite the weirdness. It feels like a coherent story, unlike the stuff Netflix produced

Not sure what you’re talking about - what are your sources for this? Just because there are existing science concepts doesn’t mean it’s stolen lol, the generic concepts of aliens or physics are not patented IP. Just because something from the east is interesting and creative, doesn’t mean it’s copying from the west. Whatever you’re implying is disrespectful - to the author, to the sci-fi community, and to non-western creatives.
