This comment really touched me. I was not abused nearly to the point she was, but when Steph was describing this part, I understood immediately, like almost having a flashback to this intense feeling of “you will not break me”. It’s weird because those moments were the strongest I’ve ever felt in my life, but they’re juxtaposed by the external reality of the situation. I’ve never thought about it as beautiful, but I can kind of see it through your comment. It was also at that point where I just knew she would be okay. Yes, there’s going to be a long recovery for her, but once you feel that fire within you, it’s forever. You will refuse to be broken by the person who hurt you, even when that damage lasts

@@Milkman0101as a child abuse survivor I feel this in my bones, my mother and brother would use gaslighting, manipulation, neglect, and sometimes for fun a lot of violence, even during those moments where my brother beat me, smashed my head into walls and strangled me, I NEVER begged and refused to break. He was sadistic and wanted me to beg, but I refused to beg, refused to cry, refused to submit. I escaped at 18, have never looked back (am 33). I have permanent nerve damage to my lower abdominal wall (lower stomach/pelvis from repeated kicking) and cPTSD, I shouldn’t have those kind of battle scars but I do, they’re part of me. It’s helped me in some weird way when dealing with wannabe bullies in life, through college, university and work (before my nerve damage got too much, mostly housebound/bedridden disabled but that’s okay) because bullies want you to submit and cower in fear… but the way I grew up I just straight up didn’t fear these wannabe Mean Girls, I’d stare them down and challenge them, if they want to be bullies then they need to _try_ and break me and that won’t be happening, this happened moreso in college/uni (I dunno what it is about educational spaces and bullies but good LORD), and some kitchens I worked in with chefs unhappy in life trying to take it out on their staff. Those intense moments going through actual hell where you’re barely holding onto consciousness? The one thought that always ran through my brain was “he will not break me, I refuse”. I hope Chamilla is able to heal and knows just how strong she truly is, that she has a fighters spirit, that she’s a warrior, and even if the scars last a long time or maybe forever, she can’t be broken, she’s incredibly strong and brave. I hope she holds onto that feeling because it’s an incredible feeling to hold onto when going through your darkest day. Like battling cPTSD isn’t fun but I combat it with “but I’ll never be broken, this trauma sucks and I have to live alongside the trauma, but I’ll never have my spirit broken”, it’s hard to explain just how much that feeling really helps.

Had a girl like Helen in school. She didn't know who I was and came up to me cause I was talking to her boyfriend in PE and slapped me in the face. Said a lot of mean stuff and embarassed me in front of students. Most of them stayed quiet but some didn't laugh. She didn't know my dad was a teacher in high school. I went to the principals office which was my dads friend and put on the water works. She ended up suspended and my dad told her she better not be one of her student in highschool cause she'll get it coming. She was so shocked. I saw her a few times and smiled at her. She attended the high school and stayed quiet. Stopped her bullying cause if she got kicked out of school she would have to go to the high school all they way to the other town. Don't be afraid to stand up to bullies. If they're manipulative be more manipulative than them. They will never stop, if they know you'll stay silent you'll just be a target. Thank God they didn't kill her. There are several stories like this that come to mind (Shanda Sharer and Skylar Neese, in particular) that if you follow true crime, you've probably heard multiple times, but they ended much worse. I think Camellia is very brave and I'm glad she spoke out. I hope she's doing alright. I feel weird using the word "lucky," but she really is lucky to be alive. These monsters should be in prison for the rest of their lives. They tried to kill her, that's what they wanted to do. I don't really see a difference between attempted murder and murder...The intention was the same. And trying to light someone on fire? My God! That has to be one of the most brutal ways to kill a person. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. I was a teenage girl, I went through petty beef and was bullied, but I never wanted to physically harm anyone. There is something seriously wrong with these people. I know "The Hangover" is a comedy, but there's a line from it that I think about a lot in situations like this. When Stu is breaking up with his fiancee he says, "You're just a bad person. Like, all the way through to your core." There are people like that in the world and it's really scary.

This is disgusting on how much this reminded me of “The Glory”. Camilia was so strong tho. Many victims would’ve gave in, felt defeated, or exited because it seems like no way out & many wouldn’t have gone to the police for help. I’ve heard a lot of foreigners say that they don’t want to visit or send their college age kids to the United States because of how dangerous it is here. Especially the unchecked gun violence that the majority of other countries don’t have. It’s shocking to think that those spoiled exchange students were bullying one of their own, but given their cultural norms they never thought she would turn them in. I’m so proud that Camilla reported the incident to the police. This story is so sad and I’m sure has caused lifelong trauma to Camilla. The only benefit that has come from it is the three older ones were sent to prison & then deported back to China. Having said that, I wouldn’t be surprised if their parents were able to have their names and identities changed so that they could go on to have normal and successful lives after returning to China. I’m not religious but I pray that Camilla can get past the psychological and physical abuse and live a happy life. She didn’t deserve what happened to her and hopefully going forward the families that foreign students are placed with have more of a parental/guardian role in their lives.
@Airemelde

I think, if you take her physical injuries and general appearance into account, there probably wasn't much she could have done to NOT report this. It would have come out eventually anyway. There is no way she could have made up a story around it that the police and other parties would have believed. Good on her for not trying to hide anything in the first place. It probably would have made things a lot harder for the prosecution and would have felt like another victory forr the bullies if she had been too scared to speak up about it. And it probably took quite a bit of courage to do so. So kudos to her for doing it anyway.

From my experience as a Chinese-American who often gets asked to host international students, kids who get sent to the US under random host families tend to have irresponsible parents who don't want to parent. Responsible parents try to have one of them come with or send the kid to a relative. If they can't do that, they try to get in touch with an acquaintance like me with a good education and plenty of time to watch over their child instead of strangers, and they ask for A LOT. A school with these conditions would only be acceptable if the parents are uncaring or gullible. The parents and administrators in this story failed the children on so many fronts.

I grew up in the San Gabriel Valley so this story was really fascinating. I was a little confused at the beginning because you started off by talking about three students, then about six students and six parents. Otherwise, I love your storytelling. Your analogy to Lord of the Flies was so spot on. I think that their environment played a huge part on their actions. At the same time, how does a good person feel that burning a cigarette on someone is acceptable?

I teared up hearing what happened to Camilla, if I was her father I would spend the rest of my life seeking vigilante justice for my daughter. The judge that handed down these sentences was way too lenient on these monsters. The American justice system is usually heavy handed, it makes me wonder why theses sentences was so low. These monsters spent 5 hours torturing a fellow human being, a classmate, and showed no remorse. They made her drive them home, this is about as evil as it could get and to know that our justice system failed the victim and society by handing such low sentences makes my blood boil with rage.

It is so telling that the letter to the judge/court from Helen spends about 1% of the content on the victim and then the entire rest of the statement is entirely about Helen and how this situation has impacted on her life. THIS CASE IS FROM MY HOMETOWN!! Not a lot goes on there, but this incident started sooo much discord between the locals and the immigrant population and it was so awful to see and experience. I remember for a while, a lot of the newer, less established international students could never make any friends because the other students were afraid. At the risk of sounding very ignorant, why is bullying in the Asian countries the way that it is? so extreme and so physical. Bullying exists everywhere in the world of course, but the bullying stories from Korea, China and Japan sometimes go beyond simple bullying, its assault at best and at worst attempted murder and the bullys and parents expect no consequences . Why is it like that?

I also want to say I'm so glad that the young lady that this happened to did not break and give them what they were looking for in ways of crying or begging than the stop.
