The Giants then drafted Philip Rivers with the understanding that they'd have a good shot of convincing the Chargers to trade Eli for him. But there wasn't any guarantee that itd work out that way. The Giants took a major risk doing that. We're unclear to this day why Eli didn't want to go to San Diego. It's been suspected that it has to do with the east coast bias in the NFL. My gut feeling is that there's more to it than that, but it's hard to say for sure.
