I think Walmart is a serious contender. They are already trying to buy Vizio to expand their advertising business and they would be in the best position to increase shopping on TikTok. They had a fiduciary duty to their stockholders to accept. Then the rebrand to x cut like 7 billion off its real evaluation. Tiktok in the US on the other hand accounts for 8% of ByteDance's revenue (80% being from Duoyin in China). Lots of anti-vaxers, people claiming Biden stole the election, people warning that the Democrats are importing mexicans to replace white americans, that sort of thing. That's the problem with the alt-tech sites: No-one will use them as long as the mainstream platforms with their far larger audience are an option, so the only people on places like Rumble are those who are not welcome on UKposts. It was a bit irksome for TLDR showing their boomer side and categorising tiktok as a song and dance video platform 5:36 which if one is to look at stats is certainly not the case. Some statistics regarding the types of content on TikTok that I could find online: Tutorials are the most popular type of content, with 62% of users preferring them. Product or service reviews come next, with 39% of users engaging with them. Personal stories are also popular, with 38% of users showing interest in such content. This doesn't add up to a 100 because obviously people watch multiple types of centent, also their might be actual people who are interested in song and dance content, and there's nothing wrong with that either, but the point is that stereotyping is not ok.

If there is an acquisition, I'd float 2 darkhorse candidates: Netflix/Disney. Both the companies have stated that they directly compete for watch time with TikTok, and both companies are already in the entertainment industry, many of which already having connections with creators on each platform. An acquisition of this size isn't unprecedented, as Disney paid 71 billion for Fox, and TikTok is likely a better buy than Fox ever was. Netflix could also make the purchase, as they've been expanding into new markets in an attempt to diversify away from streaming. Both media giants could benefit a ton from the purchase, and in terms of management, both already have people with similar experiences.

for walmart, depending on if the TikTok accuisition is only of the US/north american branch or all operations outside of china plays a huge role. walmart doesn't have a presence in in most of the world including the biggest market after the us, europe. for this model to work they would either have to build up distribution all over the world, which seems far to big of a risk and alot of work or do their plans of pushing their online shopping exclusively in countries where they already have a presence. which seems a bit to small of a market to make such a big gamble. in a scenario where walmart buys tiktok i could also imagine them doing partnerships with local grocery store chains, so that they can spread their influence more indirectly.

I know users and brand matter, but valuations of all social media companies always seems so absurd to me. The shift in fbook to older users (i.e. people who were young when it was) and younger (more valuable) users onto tiktok (i.e. people who wanted something different to their parents and older siblings) demonstrates that social media is likely going to have a generational cycle which really limits the ability of a person or company coming in and slapping 50 billion down on the table to get meaningful returns (as they may only have 10 years as the big thing on the menu). Amazon, Alphabet, Apple etc wud probably all be better served giving 20 million each to 10 start ups aiming to be the next social media success and hoping one of them makes it

Gamestop could also be a good entry as well but is unlikely but it would be ironic. I think the humor would be them doing it, and then putting Chinese State officials on the board of directors because they left that part out of the bill. So in a sense China would have strong control over the company that buys them out and then the US would look a little foolish because they don't know how to anticipate laws anymore. It would be funny and ironic to say the least. Gamestop, Power to the players and the newly appointed Chinese military leaders to the board.

I like how you dismiss NVIDIA, but then say "Oh these other major tech companies could because of AI!". After all, its a ton of data they could sell to train AI. I still dont believe its likely because they seem to most of their capital is probably being spent on growing their chip market. Also Musk id probably rate lower, most of his $ isnt that liquid considering he doesnt want to lessen his Tesla shares + his compensation package is in question. Banks would be more reluctant to work with him after they all had to take write downs on Twitter. Honestly they probably wont sell. I dont see anyone coming close to asking price even without the algorithm or the fact they already own many social media companies. If say Facebook or Google were to try to buy it, Linda Kahn and the FTC would sue them and run out the clock.
@AlbertTorres

No, the users are more valuable. The algorithm in meta sucks because they try to advertise to you if they get TikTok they’re ruining it too. If TikTok starts advertising and like US brands, then that algorithm will get worse too.

I've heard that their US audience only account's for 10% of their user base. Why sell their business? Does the US somehow constitute a disproportionate amount of their advertising market? Seems easier just to blacklist US IP addresses. If they are worried about a dip in viewership they can invest in whatever company fills the void by their withdrawal of service. There's a fair chance that some of the digital refugees may migrate to another non-American company.

They are not asked to sell the business, just the US branch. Multi-national companies are basically a consortium of different business entities, tiktok is not different in that way, it has an EU, North American, Chinese and many other branches.

@serebii666

"Chinese person with American citizenship" If they have Chinese citizenship too then it's still the same problem. And if they don't they have no guarantee that new bajillionaire won't just take the money and run, since they would have no stake/security of control. The company having any chinese entanglements is the issue, since Shou Zi Chew being only Singaporean, not Chinese is not enough.
