The craziest thing to me is that he wasn't even young in most of these dances! He was born in 1899 but he was still just as energetic, charismatic, and talented as someone in their early 20's. Love him!

Fred Astaire was born in 1899 so it's easy to see what age he was in the movies mentioned here. It's pretty amazing to see that for some of those movies he was in his early to mid 50s and was still had energetic moves. The youngest you see him here in this list is him in his mid 30s.

Fred's early appraisal by a certain studio executive (can't dance...can't sing...yadda yadda yadda) must be taken with a healthy grain of salt as he and his sister Adele were very famous Broadway/London West End musical stage stars, i.e. they were well known entertainers. I think the studio's original appraisal of Fred had more to do with how he photogenic he was or wasn't.. They were looking for perfectly handsome/beautiful actors and actresses. However Fred's elegance... charm and warm personality as well as his staggering musical talents won over the RKO studio executives. I always found him to be attractive in an off-beat kind of way. Love you forever Fred!

Ginger did everything Fred did, but backwards and wearing high heels. Seriously, Fred Astaire was the best male modern/tap dancer of all time, imho. So creative, graceful, ethereal. He created real magic moments in film.

Crazy. We use the term ahead of time. I don't think there is one that could match this talent. This guy had no video edit and still nails everything. 1 take .

My brother and I used to do couple dancing when we were children and we were pretty good. It was so much fun when you get your routine down straight and you can do it together perfectly. It’s so satisfying.

Dancing in the Dark from The Bandwagon rates more than a quick mention!! The Girl Hunt Ballet is more flashy (and I love it) but the emotion and beauty of Dancing in the Dark makes it hard to top as an example representative of the style of Fred Astaire. Specifically, the synchronized movements of the pair, the line of Cyd Charisse matched with Fred Astaire's usual slim elegance, and the simple yet beautiful costuming all add to the dance - I would call it iconic more than the The Girl Hunt Ballet. Fred Astaire was elegant much more often than he was flashy.

@Oscar...Agreed. Oscar, do you see in the dance movements of Sammy Davis, Jr., echoes of Jimmy Cagney's style? I do.

@@ccaammiinniiito2 certainly. History has not giving Mr Cagney the credit he deserves but yeah he was great and Sammy definitely took inspiration from Cagney . Sammy Davis JR took it to another level,h e was doing things that were groundbreaking and ahead of his time and what times they must've been.

@@oscarmarroquin4374 ...And, Oscar, I was talking about the COMPLETE James Cagney, meaning his dramatic skills were just as powerful as his dancing skills. That scene where he's saying good bye to his mom aboard that "time bomb" is timeless and never to be forgotten.
