I am English and I think that if you go to another country you should at least learn how to say "Do you speak English please?" in their language. It's very rude to just assume.

As french I am happy to meet foreigners, but I don't like when they do any effort, even saying "Bonjour " with a smile is enough. When I go to differents countries when I try to speak, with an horrible french accent, their language, people are Happy.

@James Bond If a French person were to ask "Do you speak French please?" they would have a lot more trouble finding someone who could ( here in the UK anyway) whereas if someone asked if someone could speak English ( in a non English speaking country), it would be easy.

This was excellent. Maia does a wonderful job of explaining the subtleties of French culture. It is really helpful for English speakers learning French to have a teacher who speaks both languages, and also to have the great translations underneath. She is an ideal teacher.

1:19 I'm an American who has lived in Paris for 20 years and I also get annoyed when I'm in the boulangerie, for example, and I hear Americans immediately speaking to the workers in English after being asked in French what they would like. These tourists go straight to ordering in English without even asking if the person serving them speaks their language I find it quite embarrassing and awkward because French people don't visit the USA thinking they can just speak French to waiters, sales people, hotel staff, etc. But, Americans and also the English, to an extent, somehow think it's ok to do that.

@@quinquiry Yes, I can imagine people working in shops, restaurants, bakeries, etc here in Paris feeling unnecessarily forced to communicate in a language they are not comfortable with.

@@christopherdieudonne the more so, the poor boulangerie employees are not PAID accordingly , as waiters are in high end restaurants, or saleswomen in Galeries Lafayette who are REQUIRED to be bilingual or more, and can speak English and Chinese ! .

Hi Christopher, well, you're right, French native speakers, or Norwegian, or Japanese would not speak directly to someone in a foreign country assuming they will be understood. But as English is the official international language, the probability of dealing with someone who understands it is still the highest. That being said, it's still kind of rude.

@@MarmeladeProduction You are absolutely correct. The universality of English increases the likelihood that non-native speakers will understand you. Excellent point ! However, I do feel that English speakers should still ask, "Parlez-vous anglais ?" before going straight to saying what they want . It's a small gesture that's full of politeness. It's the assumption that people will understand you that's really rude.

Mais c'est qu'est ce que je dis! 🙂 "Qu'est ce que" ne s'utilise qu'en début de phrase pour poser une question: "Je ne sais pas CE QUE je vais faire" et non pas "Je ne sais pas qu'est ce que je vais faire" etc.

Frankly ,and I'm not saying this in a bias way,Parisians are the most civilized people on earth,maybe in the milky way.... 😄 ,there's always a rational behind their behavior,so they expect their counterparts to behave politely in the same way, "bonjour,SVP and merci" are a must ,and generally speaking the whole of France somehow act in Cartesian way,it's millennial civilisation,even in the country side there're subtle traditions that you have to learn how to respect ,there's à reason for that,the people who cultivated all of those outstanding wines,champagnes,spirits,cheeses,perigores products ,the country that revolutionized arts and maintained it in the form of fashions and architecture should be appreciated and respected.,,so if à visitor who's knowledge doesn't exceed the shelving of 2 refrigerators(kitchen and garage) gets to Paris and behave in the same way he does with a student waitress ,he or she are not gonna be liked......!

#5, I was living in Mulhouse about 20 years ago and I bought a sandwich from a little shop and took it to go. I was eating it while walking to… I don’t remember but it was in town and I was eating my sandwich “on the go” and some man called out to me “Bon appétit!” It seemed like he was teasing in a joking way, not meanly, but I did reflect that an American probably would not even notice someone eating “on the go” like that. Of course, that was Mulhouse 20 years ago, not present-day Paris, so things can be different 🙂

It's true in general the French don't eat walking in the streets "on-the-go" as we say. It could've been friendly teasing because of that fact. But either way, whenever someone says "bon appétit", saying "merci" is the usual polite reply. 🙂

Saying "bon appétit" to total strangers who are eating (especially on the go) is very common in France. It happened to me several times and I do it as well

À propos du café à emporter, j’ai vu ça souvent quand j’étais à Paris il y a une semaine mais seulement s’il y a un panneau devant le café qui dit “sur place ou à emporter”. Mais, il y avait plein d’options qui sont pas des grandes chaînes.

All this talk of restaurants … my friend and I were out in Paris and we stopped at a bistro for lunch. She saw a sandwich board advertising the house special beef, which she ordered, and I ordered a salad. Well, unbeknownst to her (because there was no information on the menu), it was steak tartare: a gigantic ball of raw meat with onions. It was huge! 😂 She was mortified! She was worried about what the bacteria in the raw meat would do to her sensitive gut, but I wasn’t as worried. We surreptitiously traded portions of our meal and after we’d eaten enough we paid and got out of there. We still laugh about it today! 😄

i am French, i love raw meat and underdone steaks, the only time i got a health problem with it , was in a "steak house " serving super organic beef imported from Argentina , the best meat i ever ate, unfortunately i embarked a very disgusting "stowaway" a 8 meters beef tapeworm . In France, cows are always treated and free from any disease or parasitic stuff. A few years ago, a 13 years old boy died in a fast food restaurant ("Quick" ) , the steak was cooked the "McDonalds" way.. but contamination took place later, when the dish was brought to the table . The last "bacterial scandal" is on its way, not underdone meat but Kinder brand chocolates (Italian ) . Killer bacteria dont live in muscles, they come from humans handling food !

J’enseigne un cours de français et de conversation à Houston pour les gens qui veulent voyager en France. C’est exactement ce que j’enseigne. C’est une mélange de conversations, les formules de politesse, et un peu d’histoire.

J'adore vous entendre parler et surtout lire en anglais. I think those fold-down seats are called strapontins, aren't they? I have heard, at least in a film, when someone uses TU when they should have used Vous, "On n'a pas gardé des cochons ensemble que je sache." Is that right, or too old-fashioned? While living with some French guys in the United States, they served a meal that included cervelle (calf's brains). They were just eager to see my reaction. Although I had previously eaten escargots and cuisses de grenouille (frog's legs) with them, I said about the calf's brains, "This is where I draw the line." My French friends were amused and very accepting of my decision.

'On n'a pas gardé les cochons ensemble' is extremely aggressive in French. If today someone says that to someone else, it is because they feel deeply offended. In the situation you mentioned, it is very unlikely. There are polite ways of expressing a slight discontent if someone you do not know says 'tu' to you. You could say, 'Excusez-moi, on se connaît?' And personally, I have never heard someone take offence for that reason if they realize you're a foreign visitor. Besides, young people often use 'tu' when they talk to other young people even if it is someone they don't know.

oui exactement c'est des strapontins haha "On n'a pas gardé des cochons ensemble que je sache." is still used sometimes but it's an old expression so it's used ironically. Personally I wouldn't say it too often but everyone knows what it means yeah ^^ haha and yeah that makes sense with the cervelle ^^

@@paulsec8852 Thanks for your explanations. I think I saw or heard that cochons remark only in a book or movie, not in person. You're right; "On se connaît?" is much better, especially if you have indeed met that person before but can't place them immediately.

Most Americans don't have the confidence to speak French and having to keep social conventions in mind is much too much. But Americans should realize that a trip to France requires a great deal of preparation including the ability to speak basic French.

Premier exemple, à nuancer. Si avant de s'adresser à quelqu'un, on dit comme elle le fait ici : "Excusez-moi, blablabla..." Ça passe complètement, et la personne ne vous reprendra pas. Le "Excusez-moi" remplace le bonjour. Je le fais systématiquement, et on ne m'a jamais repris.

Bonjour Maia :) j'aime beaucoup ce genre de video. Car, j'aime bien faire la connaissance des cultures :) En fait, sauf le numero 1 c'est la meme en Turquie. C'est vrai qu'on des aspects communes dans beaucoup de regions du monde. Moi aussi, je deteste les gens qui parlent tres fort. je trouve ça tres ennuyant. D'après mon expérience, de nombreux propriétaires de magasins semblent ennuyés lorsque j'utilise l'espècs et ils préfèrent mon téléphone sans contact. Peu importe le montant

Est-ce vous pouvez expliquer la signification de l'expression "passer beaucoup par" dans la phrase (à 11:25) "Et notre culture passe beaucoup par la nourriture"? Est-ce que ça pourrait se traduire par "et notre culture implique beaucoup la nourriture"?

Le comportement dans le métro et les restos est la même au Canada (peut-être partout) mais je pense que j’aurais problèmes aux bistros et aux cafés à Paris. Je suis végétarienne et ne trouve pas au restos français au Montréal beaucoup de choix sans la viande. J’ai toujours besoin d’un doggy bag parce que je ne peux manger des grosses portions comme les autres. Quelquefois c’est vraiment pour mon chien de compagnie qui l’aime beaucoup. On disons aussi « bonjour « ici. Presque tout le monde utilise tu alors j’utilise vous comme d’habitude au cause de mes professeurs de français.

Bonjour Maia. J'adore vos vidéos. (J'habite en Inde et je visiterai votre pays Septembre 2022). D'une part, tout le monde dit de ne pas emporter d'argent liquide à cause des pickpockets. Et d'autre part, de nombreux magasins n'acceptent pas les cartes de crédit internationales. Situation difficile !

Les pickpockets c'est surtout dans le métro et certains quartiers difficiles. Soyez vigilant, fermez bien vos sacs, et ça devrait aller sans problème.

Vous avez tout à fait raison de conseiller aux Anglais d'essayer de parler un peu le français pour demander quelque chose dans la rue. Que ce soit les Anglais ou les Américains, on ne peut pas dire qu'ils fassent beaucoup d'efforts et c'est agaçant. Quand on vais à l'étranger, j'essaie, dans la mesure du possible, d'apprendre une phrase et quelques mots pratiques avant de demander mon chemin ou autre. J'ai remarqué que cela plaisait beaucoup.

En général, je crois que c'est pas tellement difficile de s'entendre bien avec les français, mais moi malheureusement, j'ai pas beaucoup d'expérience vivant à Paris. Je vivais dans une petite ville en Ardèche, peut-être une heure de Lyon. Mon expérience là, c'est que la plupart des gens étaient très relaxes, et presque tout le monde était prêt à commencer une belle discussion, les gens au sud de la France sont peut-être un peu plus aimables? J'ai passé seulement deux semaines à Paris. Mais ce que j'ai remarqué à Paris, c'était que tout le monde se dépêchait constamment. Mais c'est une grande ville, et il faut s'y simplement habituer, il ne faut pas être choqué, ou penser que, parce que quelqu'un sur la rue n'a pas été sympa envers moi dans un instant, que ça représente une entière culture. Avec les français, il vaut mieux essayer d'être très tranquille, mais au même temps, ouvert à la vie. Et il faut apprendre à s'habiller bien.

I don't know if you actually said this or it came out that way, but the first thing you said sounded like hey tout monde even though you translated it as salut tout le monde. Hey in english is usually pronounced just like the letter A, just like, it sounded, you said it. A little franglish!

Merci pour la vidéo. Cela améliore mon français! je ne contredit rien. Mais vous ne pouvez pas donner toutes les informations en quelques minutes. J'ajoute donc, avec mes expériences personnelles : Dans les 10e et 18e arrondissements, les gens parlent plus fort entre eux et avec les inconnus. C'est vivant là-bas et c'est le Paris comme je me souviens aussi de ma jeunesse, quand j'y étais souvent avec mes parents. De nos jours, de nombreux végétaliens des Pays-Bas pensent que Paris est tout simplement hostile aux animaux, à cause du foie gras et d'autres viandes traditionnelles (dites sacrées). Mais cela change aussi : j'ai vu les restaurants les plus innovants. Il y a donc certainement du respect pour les personnes qui suivent un régime différent. Je suis super content de Paris, de son histoire et de son avenir (désolé pour les fautes d'orthographe, apprendre la langue n'est pas facile)

bonjour, ah merci pour votre commentaire. intéressant! j'ai jamais remarqué qu'il pouvait y avoir une différences dans les arrondissements, vous avez raison! et pour la viande, il commence à y avoir beaucoup d'options végétarienne et doucement vegan aussi. Surtout dans des quartiers comme Oberkampf par exemple ^^

@@Street_French la boboisation et le wokisme y sont pour quelquechose, le peuple parisien a été chassé de la capitale et remplacé par les immigrés et les bobos, qui bien sûr colonisent les immeubles haussmaniens...inutile de vous dire que ces gens sont imbuvables, tout leur est dû, ils sont souvent arrogants ... Paris est mort pour moi, je suis parti en province et ai laissé mon studio à mon fils qui y fait ses études. .

J'adore entendre le français et trouver que je le comprend par 95%, comme ici. Malheureusement quand j'entends mescollègues français je comprends presque rien. Ils parlent tellement vite et indistinct. Je crois que pour les comprendre il me va faloir parler et entendre beaucoup chaque jour, mais ce n'est pas possible car je travail en Allemagne et je n'ai pas beaucoup de choses à faire avec les français.

So my friend and I went to a nice restaurant and ordered a rather large hunk of meat that came out too rare for us and we asked the waiter to have them cook it well done. OMG you'd have thought we had committed a capital offense and it took forever to come back. What is the best way to avoid this embarrassment ever again?

Your customers. So I don't think you need to be embarrassed at all. It should be customers who decide what is good for them, not a restaurant.

Lol once the chef even came out to talk to me about over-cooking steak. Poor man I thought he would die. Such drama...some people have too little real trauma in the lives. 😂 But seriously , especially if they don't know you , ask before ordering if there will be a problem for them to cook the meat well done. That usually prepares them and they of course want to please. Just be prepared that their version may still be to pink for you .

tell them how you want your steak when you order instead of afterwards. Well done is considered a waste of good meat though. You loose the soft texture of the meat and half of the taste.

Ma remarque ne vous étais pas destinée. Je connais votre chaîne et son but de même que les efforts que vous faites pour valoriser notre pays sans pour autant camoufler nos travers. J'ajoute simplement à vos observations et à destination des gens qui voyagent le point de vue de beaucoup de français qui en ont raz le bol des touristes venant des USA qui se comportent en cowboys, tout leur est dû parce qu'ils étalent leurs dollars. Heureusement que, parfois, on tombe sur des personnes différentes, aimables, qui ne parlent pas du tout le français mais qui prennent la peine de dire bonjour et merci. Ceux là, on fait le maximum pour leur venir en aide. Je ne vis pas à Paris mais sur la Côte d'Azur et on comprend les parisiens. On a a faire avec les mêmes gugusses.

Je suis new-yorkais, mais je trouve que c’est souvent trop bruyant presque partout. D’une part, les gens parlent fort et trop, même à la bibliothèque!

très parisiano-centré comme article.... (avec une photo du métro de Moscou), pour les cartes bancaires étrangères, ça dépendait de la banque et du système de CB du vendeur mais les Amex font partie du système bancaire international, c'est plus à la personne étrangère qui vient en France de voir avec sa banque (idem pour nous, je peux payer avec ma carte en Allemagne mais les frais sont énormes que ce soit pour payer ou pour retirer au distrithunes, du coup, je préfère payer en cash), pour la bouffe, c'est aussi une question d'éducation (éducation culinaire, éducation aux autres cultures, développement de la curiosité...)..... en tout cas, la province, c'est mieux............ salut et fraternité !

Tu défends trop les français avec un peu de mauvaise foi, ils sont odieux avec les touristes, au restaurant ou dans les magasins. Excepté si c'est un magasin chic pour une clientèle spécifique. Je suis française.
