What’s even worse is that the girl learned that song for a school event, but refused to perform it cause her dad didn’t show up to the event. She then sings it as a final tribute for the father who never got to hear his daughter sing. Devastating stuff.

Yon-suk is such a great antagonist in this film because he’s essentially what Seok-woo would have become. At the start of the movie Seok-woo is friendly with Yon-suk and looks down on ‘lower class’ characters like Sang-hwa and the homeless man. It’s seeing Yon-suk throw everyone else under the bus while other characters risk their lives to look out for one another that drives Seok-woo’s character development.

The death of In-Gil and Jon-Gil is actually really symbolic, representing the two polarizing mindsets that the elderly have towards the younger generations. One is cynical, one is hopeful. In the chaos of civilization falling, it was ironically the hopeful one of the two elders that gave up on the state of society, giving her own life willingly. Jon-Gil, being the cynical one, acknowledges and scoffs at how messed up things are because her optimistic sister gave up before she did. The already cynical person goes out with a spiteful move that ruined it for everyone.

Seokwoo's death scene is devastating. His character arc is him going from a selfish man unwilling to help others and ends with him getting bit because he was protecting other people, and he makes the final sacrifice of separating from his daughter to spare her and Yumi from his zombie form. I thought it'd be easier to get through on the Kill Count than in the actual movie, but nope. Crying in the club rn. Amazing kid actor work by Kim Su-an too.

@k.v.7681
@k.v.7681 Рік тому
@@lilboicoen1019 160k people die in the world every single day. TWD thing about the virus was that everybody was infected, and turned when they died, regardless of cause. By the time isolated locations (hospital morgues, retirement homes, car crashes on crowded roads) realise "zombies" are afoot, and the appropriate response is sent, soldiers are already facing hordes. That's not even considering the paper-pushers and politicians involved, as well as our general impulse to be decent to fellow people (humans are the only animal species to seek sick fellow humans to take care of them), all of which would hurt the efficiency of soldiers. Your average army boy would not be ok with the idea of torching friends and families in a scorched earth policy, the only thing that might work.
@royalmaniac5774
@royalmaniac5774 Рік тому
From what I saw on a comment for that scene in a diff YT vid, S Korean soldiers are generally conscripted youths who are only in the military bc it’s mandatory to serve two years in it. Bc of that, it makes sense they were taken out so easily, as they were both underprepared and only there in the first place cause of legal reasons. They said it might be a commentary on either the state of the S Korean military, or maybe on the ineffectiveness of the draft law.

14:51 "Animated films are films too, ya know?" THANK YOU!! It seems that, much like horror films, people don't really respect animations. It can be really seen with a lot of awards, but I think it was most apparent when the Oscars pretty much decided to create a whole new category for animated films after Beauty and the Beast almost won best picture. I mean, it's easier to create a whole new category, than to simply acknowledge that a "cartoon" can sometimes be better than "normal movies", right? It's really nice to know that James also appreciates and respects animation.

Reading the other day that Romero thought, towards the end of his life, that he'd amounted to nothing (In not so many words) makes it heartbreaking when watching Train to Busan. Yeon Sang-ho took the best lessons from his body of work and made something pretty special: a Romero-esque that feels like it was made by the man himself. The train definitely feels like a character in the same way the farmhouse in NOTLD or the mall in DOTD do.

Neither Seokwoo nor his daughter say “I love you” because 1. Yes, it is a cultural thing. Many Asian cultures don’t believe saying “I love you” is the one true way to tell someone you love them. Which leads into the second reason: 2. Seokwoo already has done everything to show how much he loves his daughter. Verbalizing “I love you” simply doesn’t feel necessary. Anyway, thank you for the amazing work, James. I love how you pay homage to the movie as both a work of art and a medium of cultural and societal values.

The old lady sister who “didn’t make it” actually intentionally let herself get taken. Not for a sacrificial reasoning but more because it shows her looking at how these fellow living people have basically condemned them to die and she decides right then and there that she’d rather die then “live” with people like that. It’s why it shows her just standing there and shaking her head. You could also argue that the couple seconds it takes the zombies to push her down gave the people just enough time to make it into the train car with the rest.

The fact that the movie ends with the young child singing Aloha Oe to me is so very sad in a way that brings me to tears. This is also the song Nani sings to Lilo when CPS is going to take her away. This song is very tragic to me and is honestly heartbreaking.

I'm assuming you picked 14+ because you're that age or around it (give or take a couple of years) and I hate to break it to you but even 14 year olds are still considered children and are apt to say and do things that, while considered on purpose, can be tied to the fact that they're still young and developing. Your brain doesn't stop developing until you're around 25 years old. When people pick specific ages, I assume that they're around that age and are going off of their personal experiences because 14 isn't much different from 15 and 16 or 12 and 13. I said some hurtful things to my parents when I was a teenager and I can't say that they always did a great job raising me. But now, I have a great relationship with my parents. I've long since grown up and left the house and they've had time to reflect on the choices they made and how they raised me, as have I. Teenagers sometimes have it rough with friends, parents or close relationships because they're still learning and developing and that development doesn't stop until well into adulthood.

Saying "I love you" in asian culture is not a common thing between parents and their children. Asians mainly show their love and affection towards each other through actions because as they say "actions speak louder than words". Parents show their love by giving their children gifts, spending time with them, etc and in return, children show their appreciation by studying hard, giving respect, and lot more. ironically, one of the movie’s messages is that people who suffer during an outbreak are more than numbers and tallies, yet the movie is still on the kill count bahaha i love this movie and i’m so glad it finally got covered ! if you haven’t seen it yet, absolutely watch it first. some scenes just don’t hit as hard if you’re anticipating them

I have never seen a child actor have such good acting in a movie before. Her voice genuinely sounds sad and distressed and doesn't feel fake at all. I hope she comes far in her career. [24:52]

In SK its actually pretty normal to live with your parents longer. Housing is so expensive and the deposits are especially insane so its really not financially viable for the kid to get up and leave as soon as they turn 18. When the child gets married, one of the families pays the deposit for the house/apartment/etc. Definitely different in this case but it explains why they're both so comfortable staying with their parents.

@@CyrPhantom Usually in Asia, Family relation is much closer than western countries, in Indonesia its normal for males to live with their parents and siblings until your 30s and sometimes 40s because they usually are the ones bringing in money for the parents who are now frail in their elderly age.

@@MrDuck-po3wy This as well! Alot of eastern cultures and even some of European cultures have closer family bonds that is really uncommon in the west. I think alot of it was lost because of the concept of the nuclear family that was really pushed in America especially in the 1950's.

This is great to see! I have no idea why but every time I watch a Korean film the acting is just perfect. Maybe it has to do with me basically reading a book, but they always give so much to feel and this is no exception. Still haven’t watched this, but whether it takes months or years I am definitely going to watch it.
