I would argue that US politics haven't "become" that much different now compared to how it was before.... People express shock at the blatant displays of racism by the US political right wing -- yet racism is nothing new to the US. Ditto for vicious anti-Semitism. Ditto for misogynistic sexism. Ditto for xenophobic bigotry. Ditto for homophobia & anti-queer hatred. What IS different is that the overall US population is getting increasingly less conservative (as more & more older Americans die off or otherwise leave conservatism) & more liberal (as more & more young Americans reach voting age & oppose conservatism). This is an existential threat to US conservative politics, as their numbers are consistently falling & they are (on the whole) failing to recruit enough new members to keep pace w/ an increasingly liberal voting population, let alone outstrip the non-conservative opposition. This national trend actually stretches back to at least the 1970s, when the Republican Party found itself in serious political trouble (hint: the Nixon Watergate scandal) -- so their solution was to adopt what they called the "Big Tent" strategy of courting & inviting previously unsavory political groups (such as the Birch Society & the KKK) to support Republican candidates for (re)election in return for political favors ... but only discreetly (for example, Ronald Reagan spoke to Birch Society meetings by telephone, to avoid any photographic evidence of him intentionally seeking their votes). The difference is that, as the numbers continue to stack up against US conservatism, the political conservatives have apparently decided to throw discretion out the window.
