This is the sort of stuff I was excited to see when I first heard about Framework. Yes their laptops look nice, but because all the parts can be purchase individually and they don't do any lockdown shenanigans, it makes projects like this way easier and importantly, consistent if other people want to do it (rather than gutting an old laptop).

@@hailstorm7868 Sure, but you can't by a standard laptop battery that will work with the Nuc out of the box. It's not that this wasn't possible before. It totally was, hell, just using an old laptop motherboard would do it. The difference is that it's easy and repeatable for others if they want to, without having to find the same laptop, then dispose of the screen and laptop body (and eat the cost of doing so, or just happen to find one with a broken screen, but still working internals).

@@Somerandom1922 it also opens up the possibility of such project with up to date hardware. As long as Framework exists, they gonna make annual updates to their components and you can then upgrade you setup without the hassle of trying to match hardware to your DIY project.

Let me give you an idea for your next project. Using raspberry pi or jetson board to make a 6.8 inch phone . With very small bulk size. You can add the fan to it only if your going to over clock it to the extreme. Running Android. Let's see what you will build. From West Africa

@@jacobnelson2480 while true altruism is impossible to achieve, it is possible to be less greedy. Matt could milk this project for every penny. However, he decided that the ad/sponsorship revenue was enough for him. And that he didn’t need to sell the project as well. I will never fault someone for trying to get the last dime out of their hard work. Money is something we all need. But when there is more money to be made, yet you forgo it to help others… well I would consider that commendable and kind.

This is a great idea. I worked as an electrical engineer programming machinery, and working on-site or near the machine with a laptop became a pain in the arse. I got a tripod and modified it with a plate on it, then made a long arm to hold a second monitor above the laptop. This allowed me to stand at the machine while plugged in and have the screen at eye level and keyboard and mouse at a comfortable position. I think this idea is amazing, incorporating this with a tripod stand and having a surface for a mouse and keyboard while having a removable PC this size at eye level would literally be the ultimate programmers workstation in an industrial setting.

@@T0DD correct, they have 12th to 13th gen upgrade boards, would be nice if they made AMD variants but so far they are the only ones who make a laptop with an up-gradable CPU at this point (that isn't a Desktop Class CPU board shoved into a tiny compartment)

Open Source used to be pretty much the defacto standard of the internet. The only reason it's now a ''thing'' instead of ''the standard'' is because of how hard corrupt individuals / groups have tried to push open source out of our culture. We are probably going to have to topple entire governments and regimes because all of this is too far gone already.

Also the DMCA is an absolute joke and we should work on getting rid of it tbh. Everything was so much better when nobody took that sort of thing seriously. We would laugh at media companies for trying to ''curate'' their data into monetary exploits. The funny thing is, there are huge antitrust concerns with monetizable data, given you can infinitely copy and produce digital data at essentially ZERO cost, and you can't do that with other industries, so it should be unironically illegal to force monetization on digital (i.e, highly exploitable) data.

@@bulletpunch9317 No, it's not piracy. Digital content requires no cost to be duplicated and if it has been published, then creator has been already remunerated. So no. It's not piracy. Even if it's not digital, there can't be piracy - how do you see paying Rembrandt for a copy of his painting? Who got robbed - because that's what piracy is - by copying his artwork (not even counterfeit)? Though I understand people publish their work in anticipation of FUTURE income - which is fair expectation, I admit - it doesn't mean they lost anything from what they gained already. If anything, one should absolutely punish unauthorized re-use (i.e. someone downloads someone's content and monetizing it further). This will take care of actual pirates.

It's not very compact, but still it should barely fit into a compact backpack. The problem is navigation. Touchscreen on all three displays? Would be neat, but those legs and hinges would be wobbly. Keyboard and Trackpad? There's none. You won't be able to fit it into your bag, unless you get something hilariously small and un-ergonomic. Or you hope wherever you go there's a spare unit to borrow. Or you just don't use one and have no interactability.

This is insane. Going above and beyond, not going to lie, i think this is the first actually easily feasible for me build as a student (with a 3d printer) that lives in an apartment and doesn't have any power tools. It's really in tune with framework's solutions for you to make it open source. Really appreciated!

I would likely not utilize them on my own (my HP laptop will become dust before I purchase another laptop), but I want to say the largest possible THANK YOU for making the 3D printing files open-source and allowing, nay encouraging, other people to modify them on their own. I'm sure it takes a lot of work to create this, and ending your (presumably) days and weeks of hard working and engineering with a desire for other people to share in your amazing creation is truly, well, amazing! @@jpjapers the issue is that back in the day they "said" it was too easy to break, while the phones *are* breaking by design. because it's *bendable*, not *foldable*. you can even roll up a TV perfectly fine and all that, but you can't fold over anything thin without squishing stuff to death at the crease. even heavy duty cables don't support *folding*, how's a sandwich of extremely thin and precisely printed/sputtered/whatever traces on some kinda plastic (that's totally not gonna get weird creases messing with everything after like 10 folds, riiiight samsung :P) around a layer of fancy glowy molecules supposed to be more rugged than that :P

Something like the Microsoft Surface mouse would be ideal. It straightens completely flat when you want to store it, then bends into a curved mouse shape when you need to use it. For the keyboard, I guess a low profile super compact one will need to do.

Your creative is impressive. You mention the nuances of dealing with a standard laptop and you're right about all the nuances. Having the laptop elevated at eye level eliminate neck fatigue. This setup does highlight a good prospect of a useful laptop system for productivity.

yes, not to sure about hinges, as a everyday luggable Item, like idea of the extendable legs, but as it meant to be used in the field as it where (office, hotel rooms etc.) where a really stable table are available that maybe the case, but where wobbly table is king, your going to have problems? (like it he build laptop, from almost scratch, with research, tech,. and a design departments, million pound/dollar budgets

@@edenassos LTT does employee several dozen full time engineers and software developers. I wouldn't say they lack skill as shown by their occasional in-depth videos but rather they focus on quantity to support it's 100+ employees. The company produces over a dozen videos a week across all of it's channels. I think once their new lab extension is complete, they will definitely start producing technical content on a consistent basis, perhaps even a new lab channel and website.

Inspiring as always! I've just gotten my own 3d printer and I'm just chomping at the bit to design all kinds of stuff! Last year I built a stand for my desktop replacement laptop from wood and aluminum. It has liquid cooling so I built it to contain all of those components as well as the power brick and extra hard drives and peripherals.

Now finally, a laptop with proper ergonomics that can help me get me more work done on train travels.😁 Seriously, I'm a big fan of this design. I day-dreamed of having folding vertical side panels to my laptop when I was gone studying far off from home. So satisfying to finally see it built, in probably the best possible way. That also goes for all the content on your channel. You always put loads of thoughts in every projects, and come up with something that is both pleasing and functional.

Programmers like me probably would use the main panel while working in big spurts, and then switch to a side panel when testing out something that needs the full main screen for usage. Or when monitoring an active process (use a side panel) while also working, which is something I have to do every day with our trading engine.

I need 2 screens for work stuff- so I have to take a second screen with me- and then I also have an entire normal PC with multiple bigger screens at eye level because staring down at 2 small screens all day sucks. And the portability in this build isn't even compromised so I really don't get your point here

There needs to be a distinction between full portability (where you have everything self-contained and can deploy it in seconds), and just regular portability (where you can fairly easily transport things, but it takes a little bit to set it up and pack it back away). This is perfect for someone who travels a lot, but then stays in that place they travel to for at least a day at a time. It's easy enough to take with you on a train or plane, but also gives a comfortable setup when unpacked.

I wish you used copper or some kind of metal for the case, but it might be because of the weight and possible short circuits. Great project as always ❤️

I frequently offset the layers in parts that need to be split, like how bricks are. Means you don't need as much glue.

love the idea , I am currently running an iPad as a secondary display and I can confirm that it is an amazing addition to my system I would love to see a vesa mount on that which will be more reliable and universal

Very nice project. Long ago I did a diy laptop cover for better cooling, and also used superglue instead of some dedicated glue for plastics :) I'd do it a little different with the "leg" system. Only the screen(s) would go up, the base computer would stay on table, working also as a stand for the screens. The base to screen connectors would be expandable metal pipes (like old radio antennas or selfie sticks).

Using the iPad screens is absolutely genius and I would never even considered them before. It makes perfect sense as long as the main center screen is sufficient resolution and refresh rate. I hope to see this idea get pushed even further in the future.
