Great explanation but would've really improved by playing them so people can hear how it sounds! Makes a huge difference, you kind of have to "feel" triplets imo

I was taught to pronounce the word “triplet” with 3 syllables: trip-ah-let. That has served me well over the years.

Crotchet = Quarter Note. Quaver = 8th Note. Semiquaver = 16th Note. Demisemiquaver = 32nd Note. Hemidemisemiquaver = 64th Note. Semibreve = Whole Note Minim = Half Note

Wow! Amazing! When I started studying music, I got confuse all the time most especially to those deep music theories. Now then, this particular lesson paved me the way to understand TRIPLETS as one of the theories in music. Thank you!

FINALLY - A video explaining some of the more complex triplets. I've been learning the score for Vaughan Williams "A Sea Symphony" and I've encountered all kinds of triplets I've never seen before. Some of them are like the examples in your video. I have also encountered a triplet in which there are three different notes. An especially tricky one for me is one in which a triplet is tied to a longer note that comes before - for example, a half note tied to a triplet of quarter notes. (The half note and the first note of the triplet are the same pitch and I don't know how long to hold that pitch). I agree with some of the comments that it would be helpful to hear these various examples played out. Thanks again for a great video.

thank you. do you have any vids that would include actual examples of the notes BEING PLAYED, as to get the feel for the triplets in the different contexts?

Great, I know there are notations worth 2/3 their normal rhythmic value... But what does that MEAN? Are they played fast? Do they tack on an extra beat to the measure? Why would we use triplets? What IS a triplet, in essence?
@ecronaclon47
@ecronaclon47 7 років тому
it's putting 3 notes in for the value of 2.

If I'm not mistaken, quarter notes, half notes and eighth notes (US terminology) are called crotchets, minims and quavers (respectively) using UK terminology.

I love these videos, but it would be REALLY helpful if you also made a 2nd series, about ear/rhythm training, where you explained (audibly) how the various rhythms and time signatures actually sound. I get how triplets are calculated, but how they are performed is another thing altogether

Is it right to say that a triplet will always shrink a piece a notation to 2/3's of what its normal value (the same notation without the triplet) should be? I think that would be the most simple definition of it, wouldn't it?

Thanks, this opens up a question no one seems to touch on. If the 2 notes that the triplets replace are lets say for the sake of this example 12 seconds long (6 each), a note would be played at 1 second followed by 5 seconds of decay and then at 7 seconds followed by 5 seconds of decay. So with that in mind does a triplet: Play on 1 second with 3 seconds decay, 5 seconds with 3 seconds decay and 9 seconds with 3 seconds decay? Or as I hear most people playing: 1 beat on 1 second the 3rd beat at 10 seconds (where a natural non triplet quarter note would sit, leaving 2 seconds decay) then note 2 stuck directly in the middle at 5.5 seconds. TIA

I don't understand how we get the value of a half note with triplet quarters. More specifically why do we use two quarter notes out of the triplet quarters to derive a half note? There are three quarter notes in that triplet. 1/4 + 1/4 +1/4

I see your confusion as a crotchet is supposed to be a quarter note. However, in music theory a crotchet has a value of one. This is the result of the common use of the 4/4 time signature where a whole note is one measure but the beat consists of four quarters and is counted like this. Having this in mind a quaver equals half a crotchet and a semiquaver equals half a quaver or a quarter crotchet. I hope my answer is helpfull, its kinda difficult to explain.
