#sponsored @audible This episode is sponsored by Audible! Go to audible.com/livingbigtinyhouse or text livingbigtinyhouse to 500-500 for your free trial! - In this weeks episode we find ourselves on the outskirts of London visiting a couple of actors who have built themselves the most remarkable tiny home!
A DIY build using almost entirely reclaimed materials, there is a tremendous amount to love about this home. It's fantastic, feature packed design makes the home not only lively but also immensely clever and functional.
Harrie and Joe are a fun loving couple who have constructed a tiny house which is almost as lively as they are, Surrounded by beautiful gardens and with a lovely rural out-look, their stunning home is only a stones throw out of London city.
Perhaps the best part of this tiny house is the fact that it has allowed Harrie and Joe to reduce their financial overheads and work full time doing the work they love as actors. Joe as a stage actor and Harrie who records audio books from her tiny home studio.
We hope you enjoy this tour of this inspiring couples spectacular tiny home! To follow Joe and Harrie's tiny house adventures, you can find them on Instagram: / handmadehouseuk

Sadly the UK government don't support tiny house living. Yet homes like this could prevent families facing eviction to have their own individual space. Rather than spending months in hotel rooms that are costing councils thousands. Causes distress to children that end up homeless through no fault of their own. Tiny houses could also end the homeless crisis.
@patriciapalmer4873

So true nothing in it for the government that is the problem just a small piece of land and it would solve many problems
@samgraves7330
@samgraves7330 4 місяці тому
Think the issue is that due to housing standards, it now means that local government cannot house people in places that are considered overcrowded. People who are waiting get more points the more overcrowded they are, but there are fewer homes for large families as most are two or three bedrooms. Which means ironically also, if people have more kids they wait longer. If they then become homeless they can only access emergency accommodation, so hotels /hostels which are renewed on a daily basis often or very short renewal. People would also be worried if they accepted the tiny homes that they would then be less of a priority than others who didn’t and would wait even longer for a home of the size they need.
@janel342

You need money to live like this- an amount that is way beyond the pocket of most homeless people.

Hertfordshire is not a cheap area to live. The fact they were able to budget extensively and have help with the build was fantastic. My question is whose land have they built on? Is it family land? Land is not cheap in the UK and especially not in Hertfordshire! If you would have had to buy the land and factor that into the cost of the build I don't think it would have been cheap! Lovely build. Always a good idea to use reclaimed items and the ground flooring is great.
@sloht4061

You need to go look at land over the UK. All over the UK, farm land is being sold off for pennies. You can get yourself, close to an acre of land for under £10k. It;s just about looking and not really caring where you buy. Further, you can easily get a land mortage from the bank or somewhere else. They usually require 30% down payment at 20+ years of payments so, if you find something for £20,000, put 30% down which is around £6,000, you'd only being paying £300-£400 a month, probably less ( Im terrible at math past certain points) which is far less than rent, far more sustainable and far better.
@TheMyrtle77
@TheMyrtle77 6 місяців тому
@@sloht4061you would still need planning permission, and that's the difficulty. Even farmers who own the land aren't permitted to live in a caravan on it for more than a few days per year - and even then, they have to demonstrate that it's work related (e.g. They're monitoring their herd). I've seen you add the same comment a few times, and argue with others about being too stuck on rules. Well, if you're prepared to fork out money for land and a build, only to be forced to tear it down, you go ahead - it doesn't change the fact that you're incorrect.

I'm a chartered surveyor and planner, and know that resi land in this area on the Hertfordshire/Greater London border goes for £3-4m/acre, esp if it has good access to the M25 (which, judging from the traffic noise in the video, I suspect it has). The land must have been gifted to them, as there's no way the land price included in the total £35k build cost. It's a gorgeous tiny-home build, and the couple's achievement deserves all of the applause - but it's a little disingenuous to imply others can do the same, because they couldn't in this location without wealthy benefactors.

My guess is it’s built on parents’ land. So probably not achievable for the majority of young people here in the UK, unless they have parents who already have enough suitable spare land (and friendly local planning departments - which is often an oxymoron!) 🙂

Land is so costly and hard to find in the UK and planning permission is such a slow process, a major block to many people who would love to live like this and may have the funds to build a tiny house with reclaimed and recycled materials, it would be my dream but I think you have to be very rich to source and secure land sadly
@hulabiker21
@hulabiker21 6 місяців тому
@@nicolad8822 I don’t think it being mobile makes any difference, if it’s used as a primary residence, maybe they’ve somehow got around this because they don’t live in it all year round (their work forces them to tour and live elsewhere). A temporary building can be up to 3 metres tall if more than 2m from boundaries, and not require planning permission, however this applies to workshop/home office buildings without toilet etc that you don’t live in. I would have thought they would have required planning permission, and inspections to check they have met building standards, even though the interview gives the impression it was a roughly sketched DIY project. As you and others have suggested, they have probably built this on their parents or other benefactors land. Not really an option for most in UK.

The dish drying rack in a cupboard thingy. I used to live in a rented apartment here in Sweden where there was such a dish drying rack in a cupboard over the sink. And there was no bottom in the cupboard, so excess water would drip right down into the sink. And it helped with air circulation around the drying dishes. Not super common here in Sweden, but someone told me that design was common in Finland. Very convenient, anyways!

I guess that the "builder" father helped enormously in the build of this home and I'm presuming the couple are on the parents property and there's maybe no rent there. That’s what I was looking for even watched again thinking I had missed it somewhere, because most of these are on someone they know or family land and it’s something I would love to do ( when we get the inheritance) but would need to source land first

Agree with all the aboove. Fantasy land builds and they never mention where they got the land from! 🤣. First time buyers would have to scrape £50k deposit in London these days but wouldn’t have a hope of the mega bucks plot in this video….

Often when people don’t mention the land it’s given to them by family. I suspect, IMHO , Harriet’s father owns the land ? A farm or large house with land. That in itself saves time and money. Plus there’s no worries re the council or planners on your back.

This is one of the loveliest "Tinies" ever---the inside is a big WOW with all the teals, greens, and oranges. And Harrie and Joe are a delight: they're funny and charming. I loved this video, Bryce--and as usual you're a terrific host, drawing out your guests and exclaiming over every detail with (seemingly) genuine enthusiasm.

Love this, especially being from the UK (Scotland). I just wish they would ask more about the land/location. 35k is fab but are they renting the land? Did they buy the site as well? How did they find the site? That is the biggest problem with them as they are illegal in many cases and I find that is the most difficult part of trying to downsize to such a property...

I imagine its her parents' land as her father was on site every day of the build they said.

if you build another tiny house in your courtyard or in the back garden for your teenagers' private space, do you still have to seek and pay for the permission? is it even allowed to build it on your property? if your property is a mortgage, can you still do it or you must own it?

What an exceptional home! One of the best here. I like that it is lived in (as opposed to a B&B) and that so much of it was cleverly sourced. They kept the costs down but still managed to create a simple, down-to-earth home with touches of luxury. A wonderful color scheme, as well. The "drying cabinet" above the sink is a feature that my husband and I might just borrow when we commence with our 12 x 34 foot (totally off-grid) build, next year.

When/if you borrow this idea of a drying rack, please ensure that the cabinet doesn't have a bottom. I have no idea how anything can dry in the closed cupboard in the UK...

@halflink I had thought about that. Generally, the drying racks I have seen are open to air and not enclosed... Using some kind of mesh or grid as the bottom of such a cabinet would serve to allow more air in and provide any drops of a water an easy exit, I would imagine.

Fabulous episode. Love this beautiful tiny house and the 10 by 30 dimensions. I would only add two things: a bathroom upstairs with the bedroom, and a washer and dryer hidden away downstairs. Actually one last thing. As beautiful as all that glass is, mine will be Ft Knox. No one is going to be breaking into it. 😂

Lovely, interesting and different design. Perfect example of designing for individual needs and repurposing materials. I'm surprised portable induction cooktops aren't used more often in tiny houses - the benefit of being able to take it outside to cook more foods with more overpowering smells must be a benefit, as well as extra benchspace if you have storage allocated for it. Window configuration and use of mirrors also really clever.

I've loved seeing the UK tiny houses so much and this one is particularly special! Sometimes when watching the other videos I've felt a little bit unsure if tiny house life would work over here in the UK, since so many homes seems to feature that real indoor/outdoor living all year round, which of course only works for a few months here, if that! It's been really great seeing all these lovely houses that prove that wrong:)

I love the idea about designing and building around what is available. It's like a mystery tour or unpacking a surprise. It also produces very individual homes. This lovely home definitely is. A couple questions about the roof. Does it actually unbolt and gets lifted off for transport? What is the covering? It makes a lovely change from the usual metal roof and makes it more like a "real" house.

This is THE best tiny house I've ever seen. The layout is beautiful and spacious, with so many interesting little details. I love that there's a real living room...in too many tiny homes, the living room seems like an afterthought with an uncomfortable wooden bench with some cushions that serves as a sofa. And the reading "room" above the living room is a sweet little area that serves a real purpose. I love everything about this house...Harrie and Joe did a great job in building their perfect home.
