I'm a passionate music enthusiast who recently revamped my audio system with a new turntable cartridge and amplifier. My next mission? Crafting high-end speakers. This DIY journey consists of four stages: constructing cabinets with precise specifications and wiring, emphasizing design, creating stands that are visually striking and minimize bass vibration transfer, and designing the speaker grills. I've utilized a high-end DIY kit from CSS Audio; it's like piecing together a puzzle. I'm insanely happy with how these turned out and they sound absolutely amazing!

Amazing design and finish, one of the rare projects where I thought, "I want to do that." One thing that helps when doing the CNC stack up is to model in two dowel holes. Then you can use the dowel to align everything. I was going to leave a double negative (to turn it into a positive) but you want no negative comments...

I am currently listening to " Apache - steel guitar " on my 1978 home made speakers. They each contain one 15 inch woofer, two mid-range drivers, and four tweeters. I did have to eventually replace the outer foam rings on the woofers due to the rubber foam having turned to dust. That cost me a whopping 27 dollars and several hours of work. But then they were back to being as good as new. The front panels are black, but that too had faded. I finally found some black wood stain and re-stained them. Now they look as good as the day i made them. Everyone who has heard them asked me to build them a pair. I also just brought my 1978 Soundcraftsmen PE-2217 equalizer back to proper performance. The 20 Faders ( potentiometers ) were stiff and intermittent. But that thanks to using Deoxit and a silicon lubricant, all is brand new again.

Great vid fella. Only one thing to be aware of is the plastic front sheet is likely to vibrate against the plywood front facia underneath....more glue egor! Oh and you will get edge diffraction as the sound bounces off the front 'raised' edges. And one more tip, you have the cabinets rammed up against a wall so the ports cant 'breath' reducing your bass response, they need to come forward at least 50cm, preferably a good 1.5m. But, what an epic build, clearly incredibly skilled in woodwork.

although you unfortunately and definitely still have a diffraction issue because your walnut extends beyond the plane of the drivers, this is an amazing job. Having that walnut around the speakers helps deaden any cabinet resonances. Love, love, love the grill design. If you do another pair, consider using neodymium magnets to attach them. With your skills, you can recess mount those into the wood. those stands are just SICK!!! Bravo!

Sticking EPS foam together ? - use 3M77 - although it's a contact adhesive, you really don't need to coat both sides - just spray one and stick them together, been doing that since Pontius was a pilate 🙂 You can use it for your veneers too 🙂

I stick polystyrene quite a lot and I use spray adhesive. Just spray lightly from a distance on both sides and leat it sit for a minute then stick. It’s the solvent that melts the polystyrene so if you spray from 1ft or so most of it has evaporated before it hits the foam. Then once contact is made it sticks and dries instantly.

A very nice build! I have a collection of both vintage high-end electronics and exotic speakers, but I hardly consider myself an audiophile, just a guy that likes listening to music. An audiophile is a person who, doesn't listen to the music, but listens to his equipment. That said, as suggestion: when you cut out the bluish-gray piece for the front of the speaker, how about making that piece in such a way where you could change the color of the front of the speaker for when you decide to remove the grills? Red for Christmas and Valentines day, tan or brown for Thanksgiving, maybe a patriotic theme for the 4th of July? Just a thought. (I'm a designer, not a dyed in the wool audiophile) Again, a very, very good job and an enjoyable watch, thanks!
