The Nordic Thingy:91 is an easy-to-use battery-operated prototyping platform for cellular IoT using LTE-M, NB-IoT and GPS, based on the nRF9160 SiP. Heidi unboxes the Nordic Thingy:91 and takes you through the steps for setting it up and connecting it to nRF Cloud.

Note: when you unzip the precompiled firmware that you can get from our website, do not unzip the modem firmware e.g "mfwnrf9160120.zip"
Note: If you have a Thingy:91 v1.4.0 or higher, you have to update the FW on the nRF52840 (connectivity_bridge) first, before following the instructions at 2:44 to update the FW on the nRF9160. Please keep in mind that the method for putting the device into serial recovery mode varies depending on which chip you are flashing to (either pushing SW3 for the nRF9160 or SW4 for the nRF52840, while turning the device on).

Welcome from the future! I've just received a Thingy:91 (v1.4.0 / 2020.23) and these instructions did not work. First I had to MCUBOOT the NRF52 (small button) and update from the firmware file "thingy91_nrf52_connectivity_bridge_2021-03-04_8e8c6089.hex". Once this was complete I could MCUBOOT the NRF9160 (with the big button) and update both it and the modem firmware.

Hi! Yes, it seems on the newer Thingy:91, updating the FW in the nRF52840 has to happen before following the instructions in the video to update the FW on the nRF9160. Thanks for letting us know.

Note: the video states at 0:40 that the ICCID is the top two lines of numbers on the SIM. However, the ICCID is actually all 3 lines on the SIM, a total of 18 digits.

The ICCID on the iBasis SIM card is the first two lines of numbers printed on the SIM plus a check digit and check filler (F) that is not printed on the card, to make a total of 20 digits. You can check this by using the AT command %XICCID to read out the ICCID. nRF Cloud activates the SIM cards using only the first 18 digits of the ICCID, i.e the portion of the ICCID printed on the card and therefore easily accessible to the user. This is why it's said like this in the video.

On my iBasis card it was also 3 lines, a total of 18 digits

@@kubabuczak6383 yes, all iBasis card have 3 lines. As Heidi mention at approx 0:37: you need the first two lines.

@@NordicSemi No, that not the case for my card. I suppose that iBasis changed the way how it's printed. On mine there are 3 lines 6 digits in each. On yours I can see through blur that first two lines are longer. I checked - registration it didn't work with two lines I had to put digits from all 3 lines.

This guide is now outdated. I was able to only flash the Modem Firmware. The programmer v3.0.7 has no separate option to flash between modem and app, and this last firmware is named now differently with the word FOTA in the file path. I am starting to experiment with this device and found a first important barrier. How should I proceed with the Asset Trackerv2 flash process?.

Do we need to subscribe in monthly or yearly basis for the Sim Card use?

The subscription model is different based on which network operator you are using, but typically subscriptions optimized for IoT applications with low data requirements charge you annually, or allow you to pay once for a certain data package, requiring you to pay again once you reach the data cap. You can check with the operators active in your region which options they provide for IoT devices.

@@siddharthpal1035 A specific SIM is needed, regular 4G SIM cards usually doesn't work, the SIM needs to support NB-IoT. We recommend you to reach out to Jio carrier for more information www.jio.com/

I really wish it would be possible to enable/disable the background tune in videos like this...its very distruptive on my brain. Actually have to mute and read subtitles.
