If you don't want to code, use visual scripting, don't listen to people that say otherwise. It's not as versatile as C# but it's also perfectly adequate for most gameplay logic. You have to remember that good programming won't magically make your game good. If your focus is on design and/or art, then focus on that and just get it to work however you can. I've been coding for a long time, yeah it can help broaden the spectrum of possibilities gameplay-wise but if you're worried about this then you're probably working by yourself anyway, and in those conditions accepting limitations and working within constraints tend to be easier than working without any limitations.

This is a fantastic overview of a number of unity topics, great stuff sir! I’m just finishing up a software development degree and I focused on C#, and this definitely sparks some interest in trying out some little game/simulation projects in Unity. It looks like making some variables serialized could make playing around with different jump force values and things pretty easy.

great video, saved me the time trying out. I had hoped that Bolt would contain a set of useful super actions making it easy to use, but it seems as though each node is almost a line in c#. I would imagine it would be really confusing as your game grows. I still find Unity really difficult for beginners who really want to start from where you game demo ends, I find new starters get bogged down in animation traumas and basic movement issues. I had hoped Bolt would solve this. Thanks again Imphenzia, saved us all time with a really useful demo.

At work with Unreal, we implement a lot of stuff in blueprint, as long as it is volatile in the design phase. If things fix up, they get optimized into C++. The lag between both is on the other hand bigger as in Unity, so native scripting may be still the better option in Unity.

I didn't start in Unity (I did in Unreal) and I felt the same way. As I was already familiar with C++, it took some getting used to. Right now, though, I'd definitely say BP/visual scripting is faster and more user-friendly for artists or designers on the team while C++ is like the programmer's God mode.
@nathancapps5331
@nathancapps5331 3 роки тому
@Gobblarr It's stupid to hold on to the old ways when visual scripting is much faster in general, and more accessible. I am not saying that people shouldn't know how programming languages work, but your average developer has no real need to learn syntax and annoying programming languages when there's a pretty, easy to look at solution to it. It's like web development today. Yeah, sure, you still need people that know the deep stuff, but most people have such well-developed site-builders that almost anything you ever needed to do to create a website can be done using highly modular templates and customizers. I understand the need for there to be the true-to-heart programmers, yeah? But most c++ people don't know machine code. Why should most visual scripters know c++? We all stand on the shoulders of giants at the end of the day, so why not take the easier route? (I understand lots of visual scripting is not quite as efficient as regular code yet, but that will be fixed in time. In time, visual scripting will be just as efficient and controllable as regular code is today and programmers will have no proper excuses not to use it. Considering how easy it is for even a non-programmer to read visual script, it's insane to think it won't be the industry standard in time.)
@TwistedSisler
@TwistedSisler 3 роки тому
Same here. I'm not naturally great at programming, but even for someone like me, I find just writing a script WAY less complicated than this mess of an interface to look at. I think this is less about if coding is easier for you, and more about if your brain can process words or visuals better. I prefer the syntax of a script over flow charts and visuals. It's easier for my brain to understand.

visual scripting can be hard for some people because you have to keep track of all nodes and connections, when in scripting everything is lineral (unless you use multiple threads. but still), from top to bottom. Also nodes make it very hard to send value back to old nodes, its gonna become a mess! A lot of begginers will start using it and get stuck in this spaghetti visual scripting hell, but i hope it will make it easier to learn c# after.

Huge thanks for this comparison! Coding is much more neat it seems. Visual scripting has a long way to go to become ready. Everything is perfect in the tutorial. But am I the only one who would prefer these lessons without the BGM? It causes a headache in a long video and is an unnecessary distaction imo. Following your voice is engaging enough. :)

Hmm... I usually code in C#, but seeing how Bolt works, I'm starting to wonder how useful it really is. I don't see how a non-coder would understand the flow logic and the termonology used. Even IF a beginner manages to figure out the terms en flow without ever learning programming, I bet that same person could have learned programming in a fraction of the time. I can agree that Bolt might help with "compartmentalizing" as you called it, but I feel that's a skill needed in code as well. And without some coding knowledge, I doubt a beginner would actually compartmentalize. It would more likely look like that final (flawed) graph you showed. I'm definitely going to stick to coding in C# and dont think I can recommend using tools like Bolt. Let's be honest: if you have to type in stuff in a search field for what you need, you've basically written half of the code you're writing in C#. The only 1 plus I can give it: The search/dropdown, unlike intellisence, actually provides a bit of an overview of all of the functions/methods/Monobehaviors. BUT, you still have to learn what they're all for and what it all means... and while you do that, you'll only get code examples from the documentation and across the web. So.... I stick to my original opinion: Can't recommend it over plain old C# code. Still very much appreciate the video. It's been enlightening and I'm certainly going to show to it anyone that is interested to see the differences. PS: I bought your audio pack a few months ago and wasn't even aware it's yours. Great pack. Should be a must buy!

I'm just starting to learn c# myself. And I'll have to agree that it seems simpler than Bolt. I mean, maybe it's good for visualizing things working at the same time but C# is logical down to a little punctuation. And that makes more sense to me. Although I wish there was only one way to write something. I don't like the shortcuts, people use different ways to write things. Makes it hard to follow tutorials :D

@@neverpure20 I can understand that it can be confusing at first when things are written slightly different at times, but that's quite normal. As humans we also dont all construct sentences exactly the same way all the time. These minor differences are/become part of your own style and preference. From a learning perspective: Yes, it's confusing at first, but in the end you'll learn those variations yourself... understand it in the same way other notations are done and then apply it yourself the way you prefer it. Things like "ternary operator", instead of an if-statement, or simply storing the result of an evaluation instead of doing a full if-statement (the way Imphenzia did) will become second nature. It cuts down on code and clutter. Refactoring code to be more succinct will become second-nature over time. Dont let it discourage you. It comes with time, just like anything. First you get confused. Then you learn to read and understand it. And finally, you'll start using it yourself. ;)

Bolt graphs allow you to ship new logic with dlc. If you write new C# code that you want in your dlc then you still need to patch the base app or the scripts wont work. Unity does not allow you to ship scripts with asset bundles... the code just needs to match the base application’s code. So it is nice for simple dlc logic!

Hi, that wont fix it actually. I tried continous and dynamic but the sam thing occurs. @@Imphenzia oh.. I didn't know you already tried to use it. It's strange.. Most likely you are right and it's a physics engine bug because of Continuous Collision Detection is designed exactly to prevent fast-moving colliders from passing each other. I tried to reproduce this issue with static box collider (1x1x1) and falling rigidbody (collision mode is Continuous Dynamic, collider is compound from box and sphere) on it, but collision was always detected (tried with differents start height for rigidbody and gravity up to -981).

So, is there an issue with not having your model default to the T pose? So far I dont see the issue if its defaulted to the first frame of an animation; when you drag the mesh into the scene. Any insight? I dont want to learn the hard way. thanks!

Hi! I've followed your tutorial and it's great ! Something you should add it how to keet the character looking left or right but not facing camera ^____^ Actually I didn't figure it out 😅 I tried with Get and Set Rotation but it didn't work 😅

Where does the name "Imphenzia" come from? I really like it because it reminds me the Italian word "Infanzia" which means childhood in English.

@@neverpure20 What a beautiful origin story, maybe use on my next character LOL "... the creature was born when a shaman in a moment of madness threw the remains of his tribe on a cursed altar to try to bring them to life, but the only thing he managed was to create an indescribable being known today as Imjá'ds ... Once you get the idea of how logic works in Bolt, it becomes much more easier to use and script than C# imo.

Bolt does not integrate with prebab well, I cannot even declare a field on Variable window(no matter it's a graph/object/scene/app variable) and drag one of my prefab child to it...

I think visual scripting works better for shaders and motion graphics, but for actions and functional stuff actual coding is so much easier.

Do Bolt supports delegates, Actions and UnityEvents and the New Input System? Bolt seems really really beginner friendly and capable of doing a lot of stuffs.

It does. In my tutorial for a 2d Game (ukposts.info/the/HhrftTdzvjUquOV3G5v2Zg.html), I show how to use custom Unity Events

but it gives you x8 less performance test 1 with 300 game objects rotating. Coded with c# and fps: 1900 test 2 with 300 game objects rotating. Coded with bolt and fps: 250
