Meditation expert, Joseph Goldstein, explains nirvana and how mindfulness can help you find it...and happiness. It is the clearly stated goal of the Buddha’s teaching. So what does it really mean?
We cover all of that in what is an experimental episode for us. Not only because the topic is so unusual, but also because this is our first podcast recording of a live show. We recorded this at the Armory in Boston in front of a sold out crowd who did not know in advance that premier teacher Joseph Goldstein would be the guest. We would love your feedback, because if you like this, we’ll do more.
Joseph Goldstein is one of the top western proponents of mindfulness. He co-founded the legendary Insight Meditation Society alongside Sharon Salzberg and Jack Kornfield. He also wrote a book called Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening.
PS We’ve been trying to do a bunch of experiments here on this show, and our latest is a weekly newsletter, which you can sign up for here: bit.ly/3QtGRqJ

ABOUT THE TEN PERCENT HAPPIER PODCAST
Dan Harris is a fidgety, skeptical journalist who had a panic attack on live national television, which led him to try something he otherwise never would have considered: meditation. He went on to write the bestselling book, 10% Happier. On this show, Dan talks with eminent meditation teachers, top scientists, and even the odd celebrity. Guests include everyone from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Brené Brown to Karamo from Queer Eye. On some episodes, Dan ventures into the deep end of the pool, covering subjects such as enlightenment and psychedelics. On other episodes, it’s science-based techniques for issues such as anxiety, productivity, and relationships. Dan's approach is seemingly modest, but secretly radical: happiness is a skill you can train, just like working your bicep in the gym. Your progress may be incremental at first, but like any good investment, it compounds over time.

interesting that he 'heard' the word 'unborn' and the things he says are absolutely great! I want to add even that I heard Kurtis R. Kallenbach saying that 'unborn' also means ''the unborn of animals'' in what he teaches about the true meaning about the true reason of humanities captivity, which has to do with the birth certificated 'person' which was connected to the cut placenta when 'they' pulled 'the veil over our heads... I love him hearing talk and his humour is great as welll!! so much wisdom elevates from him! ! Thank you very much!

The experience of zero. Best description ever of the experience for me. Many thanks. This chat didn’t directly address a question I have but it did soothe my concern about it. Here’s the thing I’d love to hear you ask about. I think my continued practice and incessant writing/chatting about meditation are fuelled by having experienced zero. I hope I understand that experience is the beginning, not the conclusion, but without it I don’t know that the draw to practice would be as strong. So not talking about or focussing on the experience of zero in discussing everyday practice feels a tiny bit disingenuous, as though I’m recommending something without describing the real why. Even though I suspect it’s wise not to set up a chasing-the-zero drive. I’d love an answer, but this came close and gave me more than the direction answer might have, Anyway, thanks for this exceptionally beautiful, clear, helpful conversation. Can’t thank you enough.

Joseph is such an amazing teacher with so much wisdom. He doesn’t just talk about Nibbana, but he also empathizes living a moral lifestyle. That really is so important to waking the path. Without moral discipline the walk is crooked and the wisdom is false.

Hi Dan, I tend to agree somewhat with the points made by @charderily. It's entirely possible (and probably true) that mindfulness meditation has significant benefits. I also think that we can "layer" on top of it very interesting philosophical insights. However - when we start to talk about "enlightenment" this thing kind of just becomes a religion, similar to any other. Where is the actual evidence that this thing actually exists? I would love to see a 10 Percent Happier podcast, where a discussion is held about more rational - even if philosophical - approaches to the understanding of meditation.

Decades of practice and Joseph still isn't enlightened. He admits it in his book. I couldn't help but notice. But you know... extend that carrot into the next life, for the "non-existent self" that will be returning. I couldn't help but notice that part either. It's basically just religion

We're all on a journey! Thanks for sharing.
@chadreilly
@chadreilly 3 місяці тому
@@TenPercentHappier Seems this is a journey where nobody arrives, ever. You might think to ask your leader if he really knows where he is going. His teacher Goenka admitted after decades of practice he never got there either. So you might think to trust your own experience, and that just maybe your frustration is legit, and you ARE wasting time. Of course you do get the pius pride from thinking yourself mindful, so there's that. Or yeah, just platform a guy who's parroting a guy, who's parroting another... Which is one of my problems with Buddhist "insight." It's all so orthodox. Anyway, I could go on and on, so I'll stop here, lol

Question: At what point does a journey become a fool's errand? @@TenPercentHappier
@Dharmanimal79
@Dharmanimal79 2 місяці тому
 @chadreilly a bit pedantic but the talk touches on time and effort at 14:25. It's a journey up a mountain - look at the step right in front of you or you'll trip, because the last step at the top depends right now on the first (paraphrased from this talk). Is that satisfying? Probably not. Will you get enlightened? Probably not, given the mental baggage most of us carry. But the Buddha's came with many steps prior to that moment. Time moves on regardless, so working towards improving oneself seems like a good way to 'waste time'. We may just experience something along the way.
@chadreilly
@chadreilly 2 місяці тому
I think you guys are really overplaying the journey card. Is it really a journey when you are sitting on your butt ten hours a day, not even looking in front of you, because your eyes are closed? And the question is not just "will I get enlightened" but "is anybody getting enlightened?" It's the freaking title of Joseph's book, and he's not. Nor was his teacher before him. Why should you even think the Buddha was? I'm not saying don't work to improve yourself, and I’m not even against meditation (in moderation) but sitting is the new smoking. Didn't you know? It's makes you less healthy, and the opposite of improvement. And take that whole Bodhidharma quote “Show me your mind and I will pacify it.” Maybe nobody laughed at it, cause we’ve all heard it before. And honestly, who has it worked for? @@Dharmanimal79
