Having been studying Middle & Old Irish (Gaelic) and modern Irish, and now turning back to Scottish Gaelic, I find that Scottish Gaelic is actually closer to Middle Irish than modern Irish is. It isn't just the spelling, but word choices, forms, etc, seem closer in a variety of cases.

I remember reading once that Scottish Gaelic came from Irish Gaelic, but is older than Modern Irish because of how different Irish is now.

Thank you so much for making these videos! I started learning Gaelic on Duolingo at the beginning of the shutdown but it does't explain things - it just teaches by repetition. I like to use the app and then supplement with your videos. You've helped to explain a bunch and I've only seen two of your videos so far! keep making them! :)

Hi Jason - this is the second video of yours I've watched and I'm really, really impressed. I'm a CELTA-trained linguistics graduate and am so very relieved to find a teacher that uses TPR and immersion to make learning more painless and fun - as it should be!! I wasn't sure I would for a language as small as Gaelic. I'm considering signing up for your course after my exams are over, but for now, thank you!!

Hi Melissa. Great to hear from you, fellow teacher. I'm glad you're here. 🙂 What led you to Gaelic? I agree - it should be enjoyable. You should've seen my classes when I worked in a Scottish high school. Once I switched to TPRS, my students became much more lively and spoke Gaelic because they wanted to. It was wonderful to see - and heartbreaking to see my administrators' indifference. But that's another conversation. I wish there were some TPRS/CI teachers for the Nordic languages. I would keep them afloat single-handedly! Anywho, it would be a pleasure to see you on my Foundations course someday. No rush at all. It's not going anywhere and exams are important. Your videos are great! I have been looking a while for a method that works well for me as I really want to learn the language, but most I have come across I have trouble putting to practical use. You teach this similar to how I learned Latin in school. Glad I found your channel! Thank you!

Love the practice speaking. I have been studying off of a CD while I drive. I was happy to know that I recognized more than 1/2 of the words and phrases in your video. I also appreciate seeing the written word. I have learned phonetically so far but find it easy to remember Gaelic spelling when I can see it during the lesson. Thank you so much! My days have been so full over the last 2 months with 1-to-1 lessons, moving, looking at land to buy, planning new videos, and trying to find some downtime to balance it all out. I’m glad he made the comment about learning Gaelic takes time and repetition. I have need studying it for about 30 minutes everyday for about 3 weeks and I’ve started to see the patterns in the words and sentences. Even those words with many vowels have started to make sense.

I noticed that when changing "ann" to "anns" it changed from "in" to "in the", so why do we have to keep the "an" for "an taigh" when saying "A bheil an cat anns an taigh mhor?" could we still say "A bheil an cat anns taigh mhor?" The double the just threw me for a loop is all! Thank you! I really love the way you are teaching this BTW!

It would still be: A bheil an cat anns AN taigh mhòr? Perhaps it would help to think of 'anns an' and 'ann an' being chunks of Gaelic, instead of separating them out into parts.

I took 2 semesters Scottish Gaelic back in the '80s in Sacramento and loved it. But having no one to practise with outside of class, I gave up. Jason is a fabulous instructor! Im picking it back up on the 2nd foundations class already!!!

Tha mi toilichte gu bheil thu fhèin toilichte! There's plenty on here to keep you moving forward. Also, don't forget about having a connection with a native speaker. Time with them is invaluable! I recommend working with a native speaker once you've got more Gaelic under your belt. You'll benefit much more from your time with them!

Noticed you changed "the fish" from "an t-iasg" to "an iasg". How do you know when to put the t in? Enjoy your lessons! Thanks

Thanks, Bonnie! That's a great question. There are three different forms of "iasg" that you'll see: 1) An t-iasg 2) an iasg 3) an èisg 1 is for when you're just focusing on the fish as your subject, ie: The fish is big. I like the fish. That fish is speckled. This fish is very pink. 2 is for when you use a little word, like on/under/from/in, to talk about the fish: anns an iasg (in the fish), fon iasg (under the fish), air an iasg (on the fish). 3 is for when you pair an action with "the fish", ie: ag iarraidh an èisg (wanting the fish), a' faicinn an èisg (seeing the fish), ag ithe an èisg (eating the fish). This different form, èisg, means "*of the* fish". So literally we're saying "I am wanting *of* the fish": Tha mi ag iarraidh an èisg. Does that clarify things a bit?

Moran taing Jason. My grandfather Teàrlach was among the last of my immediate family to speak gaelic on Skye. Back in his primary school days they'd beat you if you didn't speak english in school! Thanks to your lessons I can keep up the language.

Very useful Jason. I've dabbled with learning Gaelic, and had a few hours on Duolingo-though I've found it challenging, and a bit odd at times -I mean, how often am I going to say "Is toil leam guga!."? Unless I live in Ness, pretty much never. Your lessons are easy to follow-tapah leat.

when i was born my parents wanted me to not have a name arabic or hebrew so they chose Gael from this gorgeous language so now a crazy man from a country that was never really related to Scottland (Colombia) wants to learn it

Hi Jason, I am watching your videos to prepare for my Celtic studies at Edinburgh University, and you are an absolutely fabulous teacher! I have got a questions though. I am from Sweden, and I cannot for the love of god find anywhere on the internet or in any book I've read how to say Sweden in Gaelic? Haha! Take care :)

My pleasure, Ivan. 🙂 Sure, I'd be happy to explain. *an t-iasg* = the fish (just 'the fish') *an èisg* = of the fish So, when we say *ag iarraidh an èisg*, really we're saying 'wanting of the fish'. It's a quirk of Gaelic and one that I'll give more examples of in a video soon.

Great! Just one question referring to the very end: At 19:34 suddenly changes by miracle the spelling of "iasg" for a second. Before it was spelled "ag iarraidh an èisg", then suddenly "ag iarraidh an iasg" for a second, and then back to "ag iarraidh an èisg". Dè tha ceart? And what happened at 19:34?

Hello Mia! Welcome! I have a student in Prague - are you near there? The traditional name I know of for The Czech Republic is this: An t-Seic A more modern name is this: Poblachd na Seice. I'm glad you're here, Kimberly! Hmmm, the structured books on Gaelic grammar that I've used are Gràmar na Gàidhlig and Scottish Gaelic in 12 Weeks (misleading title). Perhaps those would help?

Hi there Jason, thank you for such easygoing lectures...glè mhath :-) i have a few questions. Why are there two versions of "the fish" (an èisg and an t-iasg...is it plural and singular maybe?) And another question... when you say "tha an t-iasg anns an taigh" would the direct translation be "the fish is in the the house" ? I was just wondering why does "the" repeat (annS AN taigh) and if there were some rules about it? Merry holidays to you!

Hello Neza! Thanks for the questions. It's taken me a while to respond for many reasons but please know that I will always do my best to write back. 🙂 Perhaps it would help to think of 'ann an' and 'anns an' as wee phrases. What's happening is that 'anns' is reflecting that we're talking about something specific, ie: THE house, while 'ann an' would refer to just A house. There are two forms of 'iasg' in the video because they're used in two different ways. When it's just 'the fish' (ie: The fish is tasty), then it'll be *an t-iasg*. But when it's eating the fish or seeing the fish, the word 'fish' changes to mean 'of fish'. What is really being said is 'eating OF THE fish'. Does that help at all?

Jason, perhaps you go over this in one of your videos, but I sometimes hear words that sound Yiddish in Scottish Gaelic. Is there an ancient connection between these two languages? Thanks!

Thanks for the question. 🙂 I'm not sure of any concrete historical connection, although I'm sure some of the more linguistic folk in the Gaelic facebook groups could share more about that. Many thanks, Charley. 🙂 If you're asking that question, then you'd start with *a bheil*: A bheil an cat air an taigh? *Tha* is for statements and *a bheil* is for questions - both in terms of things happening right now. Does that help at all?
