My Dad went thru the USMC Boot Camp in 1947 and when he watched the movie, he was very impressed. He called out the beating Private Pyle got before he ever saw the scene. Meanwhile, the Army Boot Camp during my son't time in 2014 allowed recruits to "pull out a stress card" if they were overwhelmed so they could take a break.

I went in 05 and it’s pretty accurate imo. His yelling and antics are familiar however being obviously being comedic for the sake of the movie. For me in my platoon it was just intense screaming and bs when you were interacting with the dis. Not an expert on US military but.. IF an instructor touches and hurts a recruit, he IS responsible. It is a court case. Sadly, it's hard to validate. The instructor is, or should be, responsible for the safety of the recruits.. Again, in many countries, this is a joke… But many might recognize the situation at a workplace. The same rules apply. Update: November 14, 2019. I’m a behind the scenes kind of guy so when GQ called me to be in front of the camera, I was incredibly nervous-absolute trepidation. Three weeks later and over 5.5 million views, the messages of encouragement, love and support have been profoundly appreciated. I try to read everyone of them and respond if I can. Sincerely grateful to GQ for the opportunity they gave me. Hope we can do it again in the future. And thank you all for watching. Original Post-To clear up some misconceptions 1) No, I was not dishonorably discharged. Honorable discharge after eight years as a Marine infantryman 2) yes, after the military I gained weight. War and depression will do that and I’m working on it. 3) I did not serve in Iraq, I served in Afghanistan. 4) a correction is needed, I was incorrect to say the lower receiver of an M-16A1 was made by Mattel, it appears I was taught a myth while in the Marines, which is also not uncommon. 5) I did not know what movies or scenes would be shown to me, so everything was off the top of my head. 6) Thank you to everyone who enjoyed watching the video 7) if you didn’t enjoy it, that’s okay, no hate here. 8) I can’t control the sound of my voice, apologies for that.

It was a very heroic thing for him to do in light of his interpretation of the 6th Commandment. at some point in life, when you've done your job, and you are a man of intellect, you'd actually be wiser after seeing all those dark sides of being alive. I have a boss, and he was in the war, seeing people being tortured alive and even after they're passing away, having to comply with a small amount of food to protect his family, having to defend himself in a situation when you actually have to put a man down with anything you have, and after all of those things and we are at peace now, he is like the nicest and the most patient person I've ever known, you can actually see it in his eyes tho, the pain and suffering, and that some part of his humanity is dead. I did Army Basic in the early 90's, I remember one of my drill sergeants, he was a tank driver, never raised his voice louder than needed to be heard, but he explained his teaching method the second day we were there as the three T's, first he'd teach us, then he'd test us and if we f'd it up, he'd torture us, we got really good at pushups and leg lifts. Our lead instructors goal was we would excel on drill and ceremony and aptitude tests or we'd excel at physical fitness, by the end we were top in all three. The only week we didn't have the lead platoon banner on our flag was one miserable week. Of course we started with 60 and only 46 of us graduated, vs the other three platoons in the company lost about 8 combined out of 180. They never endorsed or allowed hazing, really wasn't needed. Fair but tough is how I would describe them all. All of us wanted to quit at some point I'm sure, but it was definitely worth it.
@janhill7383
@janhill7383 Рік тому
I did Army BCT in 1970, very similar to what you described. Lots of PT as training or motivation. We were also tops in all 3. We graduated about 110 of the 160 that started. Many were re-cycled for physical reasons, more were still hospitalized. And a bunch were AWOL - they were drafted. Could not believe how many failed to qualify with the rifle, that was 2 weeks re-cycle to the range. Rifle expert was easy for me but I grew up a deer hunter in Western Pa. Some of them caught up to us at AIT but we were half way through. The drill sgts. Were hard but mostly fair. The movie STRIPES was filmed at Ft. Knox and yes there were a lot of tanks on the roads all day, all night and weekends too. At least when I was there. Those were M-60 tanks in the film. Sgt. Hulka was realistic. I lived in the old 2 story wood barracks, many of them burned down, they were fire traps.

the emery one rings so true, i joined the aus navy in 93 and we had Petty Officers try and see how far out of a room they could get a persons gear as for inspections it had to be on the bed perfectly lined up perfectly ironed to an exact size. waiting for your room inspection was tense when you see stuff suddenly come flying out of someone elses room. final inspection i passed no worries but a large number failed. so they had to do it all again. but bed and gear had to be on the parade ground for inspection. the whole intake, some 80 guys and girls worked like crazy those that had passed helping those that failed to take the bed apart run it downstairs and set it up on the parade ground, then help them set up their gear for inspection. everyone passed, helped put it away and that night got blind drunk.

That Part with the Marines standing on the catwalks.. such an underrated scene, and such a powerful moment. I got to my fleet grunt unit on a Friday evening..it was quite a bit uglier in real life than in the movie, I will say that. It began a very difficult year of float workups. They would try to break us any way possible..Like if they could break you, you did not belong anyway. We lose more marines in those first 6 months in the fleet than any other time. I try to explain it to people, and they never really understand. I was grateful in the end, it all made sense when i was senior and going to Iraq with some pretty hard boots lol

@@jimreily7538 It's a bit of a grey area, but most people regard it as not portraying the US's actions in Vietnam in the best light. Especially with scenes like the Blackhawk (Edit: some folks have pointed out blackhawks weren't in service in Vietnam, thanks for the correction!) minigunner screaming "get some!" while indiscriminately massacring fleeing Vietcong troops, the second half of the movie tends to show the Marines as cold and unfeeling. It also (at least in my opinion) seemed to give the impression that they weren't actually there to accomplish any objective, and were really just there to kill NVA soldiers. It's not as overtly anti-war as some other films of the time, but I wouldn't say it's pro-war, either.

It has a few times and more commonly back then. That's the main reason the older vets always say it was harder. Because far enough back physical trauma to recruits was legal and very often used. Take a look at overall statics for crime etc. Overtime its lowered however more recently it started to incline again. Good reasons for it to if you pay enough attention.

Wasn't until the late 70's that they made it against regs for D.I.'s to touch Marine Recruits, before that it was game on. We had a family friend who was a D.I. at Parris Island. Now they just have you hold out your arms and put a copy of Navy Regulations in each hand.

Late to the quarterdeck, but I had to throw in my two cents. First, great job! I once read a review of Jarhead (the book) by someone who claimed to be a Marine but said it was inaccurate "because of all the swearing" hahahahah! Also, Heartbreak Ridge was definitely filmed up in the north end of Camp Pendleton. The "MOUT Town" that they used in the "very distinctive sound" training scene is the same place I did MCT back in '96 (the Cliff Notes version of SOI for the non-infantry MOSs).
