This is so huge for Linux gaming. Finally will developers feel pushed to ensure their game works well via Proton. Less separate launchers, proprietary codecs etc. Most importantly Valve has promised they will try to get EAC as well as BattleEye to work on Proton before launch. Meaning that before the end of the year almost all Steam games will be fully playable on Linux machines.

I think by far the most interesting part about this it represents the hardest push Linux has had towards the vidya mainstream.

Fart Cry New Dawn, the latest in realistic flatulism simulators

I was interested in finding out the differences in storage speeds and what model would be the best value. Since I did all the work already, I figure I'll share it with you guys. TL;DR, the 256GB Steam Deck is the Best Value for most people. You should get a UHS-1 A2 V30 SD card for the best performance from your expandable storage. SD cards rated at less than this could be slow with bigger AAA titles. The 64GB eMMC model uses a PCIe Gen2x1 interface, which caps out at 500MB/s of throughput. This isn't necessarily the speed of the flash storage though, so it's likely slower than this, by a good bit. Most likely going to be on par with a high end SD card, ie, same interface being used for the SD card slot on all Steam Deck models The 256GB and 512GB models use a PCIe Gen3x4 interface which caps out at 4GB/s. Again, not likely going to hit that. Most Gen3x4 NVMe drives get closer to 2-3.5GB/s. Ones without DRAM will usually be on the lower end around 1.5-2GB/s. Ones with DRAM would be closer to 3.5GB/s. So, best guess, the 256GB version is DRAM-less, and the 512GB version has DRAM on the drive. Given this is a handheld and the major bottleneck is going to be the APU and power limits, I don't see an NVMe drive with DRAM being game changingly better for the money compared to one without DRAM. The SD card prices will back this up. SD card wise, the Steam Deck supports UHS-1 SD cards. Some people may just think "I'll get a 1TB SD card!", but that's not really a great idea. The best thing you can reasonably buy for gaming purposes is an SD card with high transfer speeds but also low latency. Capacity is nice, but if it performs like dog-water, then you'll be crying yourself to sleep during loading screens. To get the best SD card you can you'd want to aim for an UHS-1 A2 V30 SD card. A2 is the rating for the IOPs, which can be thought of like latency, and V30 is the rating for the minimum transfer speed. A2 SD cards have IOPs that outperform HDDs, but fall shy of SATA SSDs. A2 is actually the highest rating you can get in an SD card though, so definitely go with an A2 card. V30 is relatively low on the scale, but higher transfer speed cards typically require UHS-2,3 or Express, which the Steam Deck doesn't list support for. The best you'll really be able to do is V30. Overall, if you get a UHS_1 A2 V30 SD card, you're in great shape. If you're wanting to buy an SD card or look around for pricing, the best places to shop are camera stores. Camera stores will know what the ratings are, what they mean, and why they're important. Your average electronics place won't give a shit. I had to go to B&H's website to find a proper search system. On their site they list 128GB cards for $25 USD that meet the spec I explained. There's also 256GB for $47 USD and 512GB for $129 USD. Depending on who you are, here's my recommendations in more detail: 1. If you're a casual gamer who just wants esports games and indie's like stardew, the 64GB model is great. Pickup a 256GB SD card for $47USD rather than $130 for the next model up. 2. If you're casual, but also wanna play some Tomb Raider, Witcher, Skyrim, what have you, then go for the 256GB model and grab the 256GB SD card for $47USD when you run out of room. Again, cheaper than $120 more for the next model up. 3. If you're a RGB gamer who needs the best and fastest, then don't get the Steam Deck. Go buy one of those goliath gaming laptops that could sink the titanic.

30fps is also much more playable on small screens like the Deck and the Switch. I don't know if the small screen size minimizes motion sickness or whatever, but it just feels much smoother compared to playing 30fps on a TV or monitor. Aiming for 30fps on newer games seems more reasonable in that sense.

The Switch disappointed me in the "play console/desktop games on a handheld!" department due the performance, ergonomics, and lack of freedom. Deck seems like a dream come true. Also since you can dock it and use it as a normal PC, this will probably be many people's first taste of the Linux desktop.

Hey Philip you made a massive mistake with the calculations. Deck has 8 CU running at 1.0 - 1.6 GHz (under sustained load I reckon it will be closer to 1.0), while 6700XT is the fastest clocking GPU ever made with game clocks consistently at over 2.7GHz. So the steam Deck is at least 10X possibly 15X slower than 6700XT, not the 5X from simply dividing the CU count

For people who can't really afford a full PC setup or a next gen console due to the state of my country this is a nice opportunity

The Steam Deck is the perfect device to couple with the rumored Citadel game. I just keep imagining my friends all coming over with their Deck’s and me having my PC and VR headset set up and we just all take turns being the one in VR. It sounds so friggin awesome.

I reserved one. I don't own a laptop, and my PC is a little too big to be brought anywhere. Being able to take my games to a friend's house is gonna be huge. I'm also super excited to be able to have more opportunities to stare at my Steam library.
