Italy has an exclave, Campione d'Italia, a small village/town surrounded by Switzerland, if you feel like exploring more Italian weird citys

And for another tiny country surrounded by Italy, there's San Marino. At about 61 km^2 / 24 sq mi, it's certainly city _sized,_ but its ~34,000 people still have a fair amount of countryside around their (multiple) towns and villages. Does that make it a city-state, or just a _really_ small country? 🤷‍♂️

Speaking of small places that function like cities, I've been curious for some time about what we can learn from college campuses and universities. I know a lot of them have their own post office, residence halls, gardeners/waste management/utilities, security, recreation centers and government in the form of presidents/administration. Some even have bus systems!
@pongop
@pongop 2 роки тому
that would be interesting! some students refer to living on campus as "the bubble"
@AaronOfMpls
@AaronOfMpls 2 роки тому
They also rely on walking and cycling as the main ways to get around. And yah, larger campuses and multi-campus schools do run shuttle busses. Heck, a few even have trains and metros, including some unconventional ones like West Virginia University's PRT and Dortmund (Germany)'s H-Bahn. And the University of Minnesota used to have an intercampus trolley connecting the Minneapolis and St Paul campuses. These days it has a dedicated busway and bike path (the U of M Transitway), opened in 1992 in some free space alongside railroad tracks.

I was lucky enough back in 1997 during the Christmas Season to be able to have lunch on Vatican grounds everyday for 2 weeks. On the grounds is the Ethiopian College. I contacted the head of the college and told him I would like to learn more about the college and the Ethiopian Catholic Church. So just by asking I was able to go everyday for lunch and I was lucky enough to get tickets for Midnight Mass too. Every clerical group has an "EMBASSY" to the Holy See and I contacted one of the Congragations from my Church (I am a Maronite) and they let me stay for free (I did give a donation) for the two weeks I was there. I was told that if people wished to see Rome, Italy, etc. they should contact monasteries and convents to see if they take in guest for a reduced fee.

Last I checked, a Renault 4 didn't appear in a Pixar movie. The Popemobile is the best part about Cars 2, the only thing that made the movie watchable.

I accidentally broke a chain (by sitting on it) at one of the Vatican cafes adjacent to the Vatican Gardens. They weren't doing any tours at the time, but since the chain was broken, it appeared as though the gardens were open for tour. I saw a couple begin an exploration of the gardens, only to be escorted out an hour later. Very glad my mistake gave them that opportunity.

As the Vatican City is kind of a microcosm, it would be interesting to hear about other microcosms which aren't quite a city on their own, but which have so many different facilities not directly linked to the actual purpose of the location. Would be very interesting to hear about them in a seperate video. I can think of e.g. 1) universities which often have anything from sports grounds to postal office, library to motor sports teams. 2) airports with malls, convention centers, local and long distance public transit hub, office space, doctor's offices, brewery, car test tracks and even their own hospital 3) hospitals which might have their own church, fire department, postal office, large scale kitchen 4) industrial sites which have their own power plants, Security / EMS / Fire & Rescue / Environment Protection services, pipelines, airfields, rail yards

Swiss guard has a bar where John Paul the second wood on occasion Cher a beer with his guardsmen. Corporals and up on the Swiss guard allowed to be married with permission in many times they are given apartments to live with their families including children. I thought there were students going to school in the Vatican, they were the altar boys and their official hobby is beekeeping with the wax that the bees make their bed into candles form masses at the Vatican and there are a lot of them. Back in the mornings before they go to school they hang out in their waiting room right next to the sacristy‘s and they are video games for them to play. The officially are in a pre-seminary so they don’t have to continue studying for the priesthood they can quit and date and eventually Mary if they want. You missed the area where the Swiss guard practice parading, fighting and the Swiss guard band practice is playing. But still he did a better job than I in lifting all of the different areas of the Vatican

A video on sacred geometry in cities from a city planning perspective would be so interesting and unique! The YT documentary Secrets in Plain Sight blew my mind, and I will never see cities the same again. It's so interesting how European and American cities installed Egyptian obelisks (DC, Paris, London, Vatican), and how there are certain shapes, measurements, and proportions embedded in the design of these cities, which originate from ancient civilizations. I know City Beautiful would make an awesome video on this topic, and maybe just a little less conspiracy theory-ish than the documentary.

Interesting but not 100% accurate - you missed the on-site hospital. I worked on an IT project at the Vatican Bank about 20 years ago, and one day suffered from some severe chest pains. I was placed in a small conference room and within 5 minutes a paramedic and a nurse (who was a nun) arrived. I was placed in a wheelchair and taken down in a private lift to a waiting ambulance. This drove me not much more than 100 yards to the hospital, that is loacted opposite the entrance to the pharmacy and within the walls of the complex. I had x-rays and scans, conducted by the nuns, then taken to the pharmacy by a Swiss guard for some tablets, and was able to return to work. All of this was within the confines of Vatican City complex. I was told the hospital has all modern facilities and is there to care for any medical emergencies that are suffered by Popes and visiting or resident cardinals (who of course tend to be elderly). It was an unforgettable experience!

To be fair, this is a on-topic video and I find it interesting. I am not as much on living in apartments as it is overall to use land more efficiently with yamvine gardens and orchard trees and more. People may find that perennial crops could be integrated in alot of spaces in an urban area, like Houston or Dallas.

The problem with that is, who gets to harvest, and thus benefit, from your fruit tree? If you put it up primarily for ornamentation, you may not mind if someone occasionally plucks an apple from your tree to sate their hunger. But I have seen on one occasion, (at least), and heard of other occasions, of professional harvesters sweeping into "public" places, (in the one I know I witnessed, it was the common of a university campus), and harvesting all the pecan trees. From what I've heard, they generally do this without any consideration for the property owner. Just sweep in, shake all the limbs with long poles, sweep up all the nuts, and leave. Your "ornamental" apple tree, that you've been eyeing for the whole summer, waiting for the apples to ripen, may be stripped bare of fruit in the early morning hours some fall day and you got nothing from it. Why even grow a fruit tree if someone else can take advantage, leaving you with none of the fruits of your stewardship?

Apartments aren't the only types of homes that promote higher densities: townhouses, multi-plexes, flats (US term for a house with one floor apartments or condos), condos, or co-housing. Co-housing seems to be the best one as it gives you your own space to: cook, eat, etc. while having a shared space to socialize when you want, basically you're sharing a backyard or garden with your neighbors. EDIT: should've said higher densities as I think the best density is actually middle density mixed use.
@melonside4216
@melonside4216 2 роки тому
@@S_Roach Some fruit trees can be private, and some public. If there is a campaign of not planting as much purely oranamential plants, it won't matter if someone takes fruit to sate their hunger, that's the whole point. It's only when people start planting trees with versatility in mind, not just for the looks, that problems can be solved.
@melonside4216
@melonside4216 2 роки тому
@@KRYMauL I know, but it isn't for me, in my humble, personal opinion. I want space to grow peas, potatoes, plums, and figs. The trees I have are my personal trees, not public trees in which municipalities/counties would plant to try to alleviate the cost of fruits and nuts too. However, I don't mind sharing fruits/nuts/crops as long as I have some for myself. On the topic of high-density housing, even if people like me don't want that personally, it must be available. Single-family zoning is bad for the future of our society, especially for where I live now, the Myrtle Beach area. This area has seen much destruction of subtropical pine jungles for more housing, which with single-family housing for older folks, is only going to get worse once it grows to a certain point. Right now even feels like that, even though there are numerous slabs of grass around the area perfect for affordable housing. I hope people can get what they want in terms of the walkable, high-density housing, but if you want your own food resources, then you certainly need some land.
@KRYMauL
@KRYMauL 2 роки тому
@@melonside4216 So, cohousing i.e. you get your own space and possibly your own single-family-home, but you share a backyard. Essentially every time you have a BBQ everyone will come because it's effectively their backyard, too.
