You can hear it in the way he speaks, this is taking a lot of energy and focus for him. It's fucking hard to actually stand for something. This man isn't anti-male, he's fuckin' pro-male and so many don't even realize it. It's so hard to stand up to this. Men are kind of scary. And they kick and fucking scream if they're ever implicated. Kudos to this man.

Men need to learn how to respect women because we are not any less then them. Girls should be impowered to dress however they want, drink as much as they want, date whoever they want. But they can't be because they will always have to think in the back of their minds, will someone take advantage of me, and thats wrong and its not the world that I want to live in.

Men get murdered by other men. And as a man, you should NOT be telling women to face it when it comes to rape. That's fucking disgusting. When we look out for ourselves, and I do, I do not have the fear that someone will take my clothes off and shove themselves inside of me. That's a fucking privilege in this society. Remember: All the problems you speak of start with and end with men.

Just a note to commenters here: To highlight the struggles of one group is not to undermine the struggles of another. In speaking out against violence against women, you are in no way condoning violence against men. There is enough space in the discourse to have compassion for all groups. Nevertheless giving a voice to a marginalised group in society who for decades have not had a voice, is a powerful and vital conversation. To come into a space that facilitates that conversation, with criticism for another cause is missing the point.

@Martin.Krischik
@Martin.Krischik 5 років тому
@Lee Ara Most domestic abuse is bilateral (at about 50%). Problem here is that if a women hits a man it won't show up in bruises that quickly while when a man hits a women it tends to be pretty devastating. So the bilateral cases are often counted as men hits women as the man had the last swing (while the women had the first swing). In the remaining ≈50% unilateral cases are also cut right though the middle. Last not least there is also emotional abuse. Often overlooked as there are no bruises.

As an autistic man who lives in a group home, I witnessed violence against the female staff multiple times. To the point where police literally just did nothing, while the male housemate assaulted the women staff. As I was raised around mostly women growing up, this traumatized me greatly. I'm looking to move out into my own place, as there is someone there now (another male) who threatened me as I told him to respect the female staff who work there. (It's mostly women that work at my house btw) and so he threatens me quite a bit. He keeps saying "sorry" for stuff like that, and obviously doesn't learn, although he has the capacity to do so. Hopefully I will move out soon, as even the neighbors have been noticing the police coming and going through at a frequent pace. Well, I live in Minnesota, I work in Minneapolis, so its been...quite a couple weeks here. But my opinion, it is needed. Change must happen. Same with this point being made in this TEDtalk here. We must stand beside the women, never behind. We inhabit this spinning blue marble together, after all. And you know, women help to the make the world, so there's that also.

EdmacZ The way you've described this feeble conduct, pretty much elaborates what I've already said. Thing is, I think it's important to not mistake chivalry for cuckery. Protecting women is of course, an alpha trait. But only under conditions where your girl actually acknowledges and respects any shelter of protection she expects from you. Being chivalrous doesn't equate to taking copious shit from dubious bitches. But it is this impulse to chivalry that gets morphed by social distortions into the highly prominent horrorshow of cuckery. The pertinent "white knight" term causes some confusion in the overlap, but rambling on about it here would probably just increase the confusion. There's always going to be a certain proportion of sappy and/or disingenuous guys that think the way to get everywhere with women is pandering to them. And with the escalating gynocentrism of modern society, which is facilitated by social structures that spring up through empowerment structures that are the product of enfranchising people who shouldn't be, it's only likely to get worse. As the voters are in a self-cannibalizing freefall of voting for the inflation of the nanny government that they've supplanted men with. Which will eventually burst like a giant federal tick on the sack of the working man. The only, actual longterm plus providers of social funding. Yeah, conditioned to fall on the sword. And a rediscovery of more earnest "honorable" codes would be golden. But still don't see this guy's sensitive backlash over provocative joke quite makes the grade of cuckery. You even pitched it in such a way that it overshoots Poe's Law, and would have many spending more time guessing, and be deemed a distraction from the cause of resistance to the march of the Feminist machine. Not making any critical assessment. Just an estimation of how it would be read.
@KadrickNinness
@KadrickNinness 7 років тому
EdmacZ That's not to say anyone should refrain from the shitlordery that triggers the feelings tyrants. Merely, that this guy reading it that way, isn't too mysterious. And yeah, I realize he said "don't even joke about that shit". Which is holding a sacred tenet about what you can joke about. But I still think he reacted to it like an actually threatening provocation because of Poe's Law. Yeah, the OP was blathering some nauseatingly vapid platitude that fails the sniff test. And the really real cuckery would be to valiantly shoot down anything dreafully unacceptable, like criticism, or mockery. It's just the degrees on a side of a fence. And he probably just read it like, he also thinks she's dribbling shit, but took your mockery as bad form in the process. It can be akin to wanting those on their side of the fence to be mindful of how they portray the resistance. Whether or not the best manner of resistance is triggering them. The way you trigger can sway the fencesitters too. The regressive dimension of the lefty authoritarians are already adept and disgracing themselves with their petulant tantrums that demand censure and dictatorial control on account of mah feewings. It works best when they're outraged, and the broader public can't see what the fuck they're whining about. Milo polling on Feminism vs Cancer is outrageous. But it works because there's no explanation required. It's obviously hyperbolic. Either way, meh.

The speaker did not explain how it would be accomplished. He mentioned working with the military which is highly regimented with clear, swift punishment; and sports leagues where personal ethics can be written into a contract. Many men will not intervene as an act of self-preservation, imho. Anyone marginalizing that does not understand the effect of testosterone on the human body.

@Alex M In his introduction and during the speech. Did you even watch it? Also, show me where he asks the same question "what are women doing to get beat" He doesnt. Why not? He did for men? Studies have already shown that men and women can be equally as violent. Over 43 % of domestic violence victims are men. 1 in 3 women are abused, and 1 in 4 men are abused... but we dont care about men, right? Yeah, screw them, they were asking for it.

I was a bystander. This is my story: My friend and I were travelling home, when a middle aged man entered our tram carriage that was at near capacity and proceeded over to the nearest female. The female in question was around 14 years old. The man forced her into a corner and pushed his groin into her body. This went on for around 10 mins. I felt physically sick and I still feel like such a coward for not confronting the man. I told myself that if the girl had a problem she would have exited the tram but it wasn't true. She looked truly terrified and none of us stood up for her. It was a pretty shameful moment. As a bystander I allowed this man to sexually assault a teenage girl.That moment will live with me forever.

You are pointing the finger at your fellow passengers and condemning them for not making the first step, and then you wash your hands. You are innocent, and your fellow travellers are guilty. Oh, I do get your point. If the assailant on the tram had no weapon, and you are a man who probably matched him in physical strength, and you were not alone, then what held you back from helping the victim? Your lack of guts!

@HoppyBunny.
@HoppyBunny. 10 років тому
J No, presuming most men don't know that being violent to women is bad to the point where you feel it necessary to lecture men on what most already know as if they didn't is insulting. And for people who self-righteously practice this insult,that is anti-male. Most men behave very well like human beings and we have an entire technological and scientifically evolved society and world to more than prove the general stater of male behavior is more than enough evidence of the humanity of man. (Unless of course you're a feminist and too entrenched in the idea that man deserves credit for absolutely nothing.) No one denies there are some men who do stupid things, but unlike feminist will with other women, men at least admit our own faults, flaws and culpability. The difference between feminists and conscientious men is that men don't regard the acts of some men to be the summation of total male attitudes and behavior. Katz, like most feminists gives you the most overly simplistic model of men from which to draw his flawed conclusions, and I've called him on it. Attempting to mischaracterize what I've said into some irrational endorsement defending male violence as if its I'm rationalizing by using nature is purposely disingenuous on your part.

blackburn9 There's no denying that there are well educated men who respect gender equality and non-violence. However, one can't overlook the important number of domestic abuse/ female foeticide/ female genital mutilation/ child marriages/ rapes/ unequal salaries for equal skills/ everyday sexism cases in the world. And that reveals that men and women must work towards solutions. By the way, I'm a feminist.
@manjeeboo
@manjeeboo 10 років тому
blackburn9 I find it unfortunate yet completely understandable that a cause with good intentions has been turned on it's head. Feminism is a movement for women who believe in their equality - but the simple act of calling it feminism singles out the feminine. Logic concludes that singling out a group of people is to actively seek separation, which in no way creates equality. Feminism is just a big mess. I only wish you would use the logic of "one does not equal all" towards feminists as well. I'm sure you've encountered many feminists who are too emotional or passionate to debate with fairness and open-mindedness, who promote counteractive ideals, but not all feminists behave this way. One, one dozen, or one hundred does not define all.

Abusers tend to express their insecurity by externalizing it so they tend to seek out people who express their insecurity by internalizing it. Abusers tend to be power hungry so they seek out people that are more prone to dependence (resulting from income, family, diseases, etc.). I've been molested by a family member, I've been raped, and I've been groped by men. I don't understand why this is so common. I don't hate mens rights they deserve equal pay, custody rights, ability to protect themselves, and everything a woman does. Yet more than 50% of the females I know have been molested or raped. Female family members, my best friend, her girlfriend, acquaintances, coworkers. I can't say it hasn't altered my perspective and I expect men to be overly sexual, violent, and cruel. I'm kind in public. I try my best to stay out of men's way. Men aren't allowed in my apartment. I don't go to private parties. So what is the answer? How do we fix this? Currently, violence against women gets systematically put in a "women's issues" box, therefore most man ignore it, but the truth is that it's everybody's problem because the same issues that causes men to commit violence against women also causes men to commit violence towards other men and children.

I especially liked the point he made about how homosexual issues, race issues, and gender issues often implies the exclusion of the majority group when they are still equally apart of the issue. But my favorite point he made was that gender equality is leadership training not sensitivity training. Rather than putting members of the community down and belittling them, a good leader brings out the strength of each member so that the team may achieve the best results.

How can you call this talk an anti-male speech? A feminist propaganda? Did you all even fucking watch the video? I'm just pissed at this point. I really appreciate Jackson Katz's speech because it's full of truths, and I honestly did not expect to come here and read about men feeling threatened and wronged by this brilliant man. Why do you all feel victimized? This video is for you to realise that there is something wrong with society, not with you. You shouldn't be so eager to bash on women and defend violent men. You shouldn't be so scared of changes, of progress, of equality.
@Reaver1223

Annie H we're not defending violent men or terrible people who would abuse anyone, we are condemning this man's generalizations of men and white people as abusers and of women as perfect angels who can do no wrong and need protection. most domestic violence is committed by women against children and their husbands, but it isn't taken seriously at all, so you never hear about it. that's a real fucking privilege us males have when abuse towards us is treated as a non-issue so we can see all the disingenuous TedX talks about how victimized women are.

***** The claim that women abuse men more is incorrect, as is the 1 in 3 statistic often quoted. Here's why: www.dailylife.com.au/news-and-views/dl-opinion/the-one-in-three-claim-about-male-domestic-violence-victims-is-a-myth-20150429-1mw3bs.html?stb=fb I am a white person and I do not take this video as insulting to me in any way. I don't feel defensive when people point out that the world is in many ways structured in my favour because of my race. When so many men believe they're being victimized by somebody just talking about this issue, it's an example of exactly what Jason was talking about at 9:05.

I don't deny it at all. I have great compassion for men that are abused. I can think of three in my own family - my father, my brother in law and my uncle. I've seen what it's done to them. And it was other men that abused them. That's not because those abusive men were born that way, they were taught to be that way. It's the teaching that is being questioned here, not the worth of men as human beings.

To all of the people talking about male domestic violence victims...the truth is that we don’t know what the true number of victims are even with statistics because a lot of domestic violence can go unreported for both male and female victims. A lot of people who have abusive partners are afraid to report it because of the possibility of their abusive partner hurting them. This isn’t a gendered issue. I just wish MRAs and Feminists would stop fighting over ‘who has it worse’ and just agree that this is an issue that we all need to teach about. We should teach our children what an abusive and controlling relationship looks like and how to spot warning signs. Also offer resources for both women and men, which may include therapy or couples therapy. People need to stop feeling ashamed for their mental health issues. Therapy isn’t just for the mentally ill. Having good mental health should be important to everyone.

My son doesn't have a father figure to show him behaviors either good or bad. It's been up to me. He is one of these guys, who stands up to his friends when they're in a group and one of them makes a sexist comment. They're 12 year olds, and the sexism is already deeply a part of their mindset. My kid has lost some friends over it, and he's ok with that. I'm proud of him. He has a strong mother and a wonderful little sister. I'm hoping that his example in some way helps the boys growing up around him to unlearn these behaviors. I’m a man and I was physically and emotionally abused by a female preschool teacher. What she did in person ended 20 years ago, but the aftermath of it still affects me today. I was the only student in the class that could speak (it was a special needs class). Every day, she’d pick me up by the chair I was sitting on and literally drop me into a corner. She’d hit other kids in the class and cuss them out, and all the while, I’d hear them screaming and crying. And when I’d turn my head to see, she’d smack me on the side of my head so I’d face the wall. Ever since then, I’ve been unable to be around small children, especially kids 5 and under. I don’t want to remain silent anymore. I want the world to know who she is and what she did. Her name is Dina Holder and she lives in Brentwood California.

@NigelDuncan

The comment section of this wonderful talk gives me dismay. The words are so obviously insightful and true, supported by my experience as a male midwife working closely with women and their families. Blokes, men are not the enemy, the enemy is the stereotypical stylisation of what it is to be a man. Work with your partners, your daughters, and sons to respect and stand to fight for the equality of our fellow people. Not a grandiose statement of PC intention but a common sense approach to what it is to be a truly STRONG member of society. It's hard in a group of 'blokes' to break out of the molded expected 'locker room' talk of pseudo-masculinity to address sexism, and inappropriateness. It takes true strength to stand up for the abused be it on the basis of gender, race, culture, difference or other insecurities. My sons and daughters will hear how it is a demonstration of strength to address bullies, to confront and challenge the abuse of any person by another, they will and do learn that true strength lies in respect. My daughters and sons will strive to express their own freedoms and the right for others to do the same. Enough with the bullshit apologists for abuse in all its guises.

Perhaps you are part of the DV industry, much government money is injected, that's why there is motivation for the false propaganda. On the topic of DV the following videos, if listened to, will convince any intelligent human that DV is a gender equal issue. See the videos, *Dr. Tonia Nicholls - The uncomfortable facts on IPV* *Police Training for Domestic Violence with Donald Dutton* Once convinced, any intelligent human should see the strong influence that feminist propaganda has had on their understanding of many issues.
@NigelDuncan
@NigelDuncan 7 років тому
Nah Steve, believe me it would be a relief to see no DV. The statistically increased incidence of violence toward women when pregnant is something which I am exposed to and is a major inconvenience. Of course ,if you want to categorise me as a false propagandist motivated by remuneration I will remember that as I am trying to assess if a feticide has occurred from punching, pushing, beating stabbing or shooting? My 23 yrs of midwifery care has had the unfortunate reinforcer of the statistics. I may not be an intelligent human as I concur with the analysis of DV toward women. I have no direct experience of DV toward men from woman, nor would I expect too but I am not naive to the fact that it exists. Of course, I bow to your actual experience in this area and your motivation behind debunking an issue I experience as mere propaganda.

Its sad that so many people are threatened by this. It has nothing to do with worshipping and everything to do with equality. Instead of seeing any gender as sole perpetrators or sole victims, we should just see each other as bystanders who can help out someone being abused or call out someone being abusive. although violence happens to all genders, this video makes a lot of important points in how when women specifically have been beaten, raped, murdered, undermined and destroyed and yet it some how is only a women's issue. that separately is just messed up on its own. and yet reading this comment section is really disheartening. the majority of the commenters dont realize how deep it runs and how historically when women were looked at and treated like just another possession and second class citizens by law and their husbands was an actual real thing. some wives were even sold to other men. there is so much so many people don't even know. especially men because they have never had to experience that kind of oppression. that's why women's right to vote was so important because they wanted to right to be treated like human beings and not be treated like slaves and have a say in their own health, happiness and well being. it's really upsetting to see men argue against this. instead of trying to understand and educate themselves on something that they never had to deal with. I absolutely know the abuse in all forms happens to men too and it is not as known as when it happens to women, which is awful but BECAUSE OF feminism, mens abuse is also coming to light and we want to take care of our abused men just as much as we want to as our abused women. feminism isn't just one sided. feminism started from the suffrage of women but has circulated to the suffrage all of beings and that there is a war against all persons of oppression. there's so much more to it and I wish and I hope that people educate themselves on such things and maybe just maybe it can continue to help and change the diseased system for all everyone. understanding and helping the oppression of someone else can lift you up and everyone else up as well. things can change for the better but sometimes you have to realize that there are shackles different from your own and supporting each other can lead to the freedom and happiness for us all. the idea that your life, freedom, convenience and happiness is more important or valuable than another's IS what is wrong with the world.

The lack of empathy shown in these comments that some men are posting is vile and disgusting. I don't have an issue with some men not supporting equality and feminism in its entirety for whatever reasons, but to continually defame feminism (calling it femme-nazi for example) adds no value and make you sound like children. Most feminists I know, care about males being beaten, children being molested and others being rape. This at least adds social value to the collective conscious and morale. There is still a lot of work to be done for EVERYONE in the realm of feminism and gender issues, but even more so the practice of tact, apparently. I would rather a world of politically correct activists (and I don't even consider myself PC) over a world of whiny, movement haters who have nothing better to do than criticize a positive message to make themselves feel better. Go cry about it together and leave the REAL men who aren't intimidated by topics like these, to take the lead and the ladies. Thanks!

Fuck men, they don't face violence, sexism and discrimination...that's sexist, you know? Maybe your so called "reel menz" will get the ladies, because when you look it up, you will notice, that when women talk about "real men" as servants. Real men do this, real men do that FUCK IT Men don't owe women shit!

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm reacting to the men who are screaming "femma Nazi", "feminism is a failure " etc everywhere as per some people in the thread below. KEYWORD "some". Also did I not just say I know feminists who care about violence against men? I for one spend my time counsilling a many men who have been abused and it riles me up inside. So buzz off fucktard. BTW men can be feminist too. Its an all encompassing discourse. Don't confuse my revolt against masoginists as against men as a whole. I love men. Even the stupid ones. XO.

Sophie N But could you actually address any of the points those "masoginists" are making? Cuz there is clearly a case to be made against feminism and the injusticies that are caused by it. The ONLY woman I owe anything to is my mother. I don't owe women as a collective anything. Furthermore, it was her choice to have me. It was also thanks to my FATHER that she had the chance in the first place. So don't come here preaching that bullshit.

Victor Pierce that's a fair point. I'm not going argue with you on that. I did bring up some quotes and did not want to get into the actual arguments about feminism as a discourse because that was never my intention. Re-read what I wrote initially, "I don't have an issue with some men NOT supporting feminism in its entirety for whatever reasons." My original point was about the TONE and rudeness that some men in comments below wrote about the movement and about women. Instead of preaching to me about how I am talking BS (sorry that my offence as reader is BS), how about you speak to the men who supposedly represents you as a voice. I have complete respect for both men and women. Albiet I separate both the good and bad within both genders in my mind. I'd like it if others paid the same courtesy when presentating themselves in gender politics. Thanks.

Sophie N "I don't have an issue with some men NOT supporting feminism in its entirety for whatever reasons." It's an ideology, people should be allowed to think what they want. "My original point was about the TONE and rudeness that some men in comments below wrote about the movement and about women." Tone and rudeness has nothing to with facts. You don't have the right not to be offended. Is it sexist and misogynist to point out that roughly 50% of domestic abuse is committed by women? That the majority of child abuse and murder is committed by women? That false rape allegations and abusing the court system's bias is primarily done by women? "Instead of preaching to me about how I am talking BS (sorry that my offence as reader is BS), how about you speak to the men who supposedly represents you as a voice." You know who speaks for me? I speak for me. This is where typical feminism fails so miserably. You don't want to be judged as a collective, you don't want to be judged for the colour of your skin, your sex, your political beliefs, your sexuality. But at the same time you think that just because someone is a man they speak for me? Fuck off. You happily support an ideology and its leaders. You stand proud when they "achieve" something, but cover your mouth when they do something bad. You say you respect men and women equally. But your main objection to all of this is tone and rudeness? How about you start speaking out against the biased courts that ruin fathers lives? The biased laws that make men out to be the victimisers and women the victims? Why won't you address the fact that boys are dropping out of education and are the majority of the victims of violence, homelessness, suicide, alcoholism? You're nothing more than a feminist sheep.

Ah, it is SO soothing to hear an insightful male.... this gives me hope. Only thing that doesn't make sense is that it appears on TED(...)WOMEN which undermines his statement of this being a mainly male issue (and it will keep a majority of potential male allies from even watching....) 😕

In the end what we will remember is not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. This is so true. Silence emboldens and empowers abusers. We have to create a peer culture where certain behaviours are unacceptable, not because they are illegal, but because they are wrong....... So true. If men lost their status for engaging in these behaviours they will think twice. There are not enough consequences, so the abuse continues.......So true.
