I always want to take an emotional performance over a studio version of a song if I can help it, and this is one of those instances. I am overjoyed I got to hear and feel Chester's pain in this performance of "Given Up" by Linkin Park. So chilling, and so revealing!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Linkin Park performing "Given UP" for the first time.

It's not a character, it's HIM. That's the sad part. His suicide shocked everyone, but he'd been telling us how he'd been feeling from the very beginning. Those emotions were 100% real and 100% his. He didn't need to act anything out, and that's what makes listening to his music that much more gut wrenching now that he's gone. It wasn't acting, it was catharsis.

He actually lost the scream this time and had to break when he dropped down - normally he carries it through before going back to clean. However, this is the most emotional performance I've seen from Chester - and that's saying something. It's understandable that his technique would slip slightly. I can't imagine the headspace he was in. He gave 110% to every single performance both physically and mentally.

I'm not entirely sure how i got here, but here i am. You commented at the end of this video about how you could see people finding it cathartic to find music like this. That is extremely true. I wouldn't still be here without Chester. In highschool my mental health plumeted. Long story short. Chester is who saved me. His music, his lyrics and the emotion in his voice. He made me feel like i wasn't alone. And i was, and still am, somehow able to align myself with him. When i listen to his songs, it's almost like i'm along side him. When he does his incredible screams of anger or rage or sings his words of sadness and loneliness. I can feel his emotions release, into the air, just free and gone. What's more, my emotions go with his. It's like his voice tears the emotion he's projecting out of me and is released along side his own. This ability turned out to be double edged however. When Chester passed, all my thoughts focused on one thing. If he couldn't beat the demon (depression), how could i? He saved my life and i have no doubt, thousands of others. However, in the end, he succumbed to the demon. I fell into a dark hole when he passed. Much like the one he pulled me out of to begin with. I ended up seeing a psychologist to try to get help. I can't say i'm good now, but the psychologist made me focus, instead of what Chester and I had in common, what makes us different. What Chester went through and what made his situation entirely different to my own. It doesn't mean i can beat the demon. It's a fight that lasts a lifetime. What it means is that i can use Chester's music just as i always did. As a salvation. Without comparing his struggle to my own. We all have our own struggles. Just because one person lost, doesn't mean we will all lose. In life, every time you go to sleep and wake up the next day, is a day you beat the demon. Let the darkness be dark, Chester is my light.

I saw a post somewhere that basically boiled down to “if you have depression and you’re still here, that means you’re not struggling with depression. Depression is struggling with you”. And that is a very empowering way to see it. We don’t need to be defined by depression, and of course that doesn’t mean depression shouldn’t be accounted for in our lives, but ultimately it doesn’t have to kill us. It’s all about management. And if we perceive ourselves as more powerful than our dark thoughts and find out ways to remember that, then we can make it. But also, one time I heard Chester say that the space between his ears was the worst place to be, and that really sums it up. So try not to be in your head too much.

To this day, just as I did when he was alive, I still can't listen to this song without sobbing. It quite literally saves my life and the lives of my 7 kids. IMO it's absolutely impossible to not feel the truly raw emotion in his voice - the hurt, anguish, profound sadness and crippling depression. I first heard this song when I finally hit rock bottom in a 16yr-long abusive marriage, and it felt as though he was projecting and speaking directly to exactly what I was feeling. The very day I first heard this song was the day I slipped into suicidal thoughts, and the only thing that kept me from following through was knowing what future would be in store for my children...they would have lost the only person that literally and physically stood between them and physical harm. Not long after that day, my ex-husband called me from the ship(Navy) and said, "I'll be home soon, and I'll be retired. That means I'll be home, Every. Day. DO. YOU. UNDERSTAND. ME???". I knew what that meant - he was finally gonna kill me. He was gonna make good with his threats. And that's when I decided to call my parents, tell them the truth of what all had been going on, and I asked to come back home with my 7 kids. 2 days later I was on the road with my kids driving from VA to TX, had a large moving van packed with our belongings, and all his stuff in trash bags in a storage building. And I haven't looked back since. This song is one of the things that snapped me out of it and helped to give me the courage to leave.

My Dad passed away from leukemia when I was 12. I found myself in a super dark place and trying to hide it from myself and everyone around me, but I could feel that all was not well. Luckily I found discovered Linkin Park's music around this time and it finally made me feel like someone understood me. It helped me to realize that it was okay to not be okay, but I could still make it through. Words can't express how thankful I am for this music. It has been 20 years and I still have cracks, I am not broken anymore. Rest in peace, Chester.

You're reaction at 9:40 to the guitar and then into the scream is the most raw, genuine, and incredible reaction I have ever seen of someone listening to him do this. It actually brought tears to my eyes. The way your eyes open, your jaw drops and your breathing noticeably changes is Incredible. Thank you.

Most people don't realize these people are flexing every core muscle the whole time they are singing lol!! You compress everything possible basically so you don't blow your vocal cords. Because he is letting his vocal cords fry intentionally. Only can be managed by doing what he is doing. And really can not be maintained over and over.

Now that we've seen Chester scream with raw pain and alot of grit I think listening to an acoustic like One More Light or his cover of Adele's Rolling in the Deep from iTunes festival (live) would be amazing contrast - while he's most known for the raw scream its worth appreciating how beautiful and clean he can sing

and to people that are like "this was chester", i dont know if i agree 100%. He was more than a tortured soul crying for help. He was full of light and laughter and he was a healer through these songs, bc he expressed it and allowed people to do it with him. Chaz was charismatic, funny as hell, crazy talented and most of all, passionate. Ofc a lot of it came from pain, but theres passion and craft in here too.

The next song from Linkin Park HAS to be their cover of Adele's Rolling in the Deep. To go from this song to that cover is the best example of Chester's incredible range and ability. After that you can explore songs like QWERTY, which showcase his insane, instantaneous vocal agility.

When she said “ when something doesn’t want to live anymore..” I broke down. Chester was my very first inspiration to sing and scream later on in my life, and just knowing that everything that he put into his writing was truly him telling his honest feelings about how he had been feeling into his lyrics, it’s still so hard for me to accept. Even after having my own struggles through suicidal thoughts and experiences, he will always remind me about things that I once strived for. Chester, I love and miss you with all my heart. ❤

You echo my thoughts and have put them into words much better than I ever could. It feels amazing to watch this knowing you “keenly” observe & understand what is happening. Even though someone may not realize what “it” is that shines through and somehow is relatable, that “it” is still there. It’s just that… REALNESS. Raw. Honest. I FEEL these words rather than just HEAR them. I just couldn’t help myself but leave these comments because of the emotional impact. I feel like I’m on a high now after watching these 2 Linkin Park videos so far. I honestly started 😢 instantly when I heard Chester’s voice…the words.. & your reaction because it is genuine and I can tell/see/feel “it”. Thanks again for the content. First off, there's very little anyone can do for someone who is going through this kind of mental illness. It's chronic, and it beats you down over time. That fight is something only the sufferer can win. The best you can do is be supportive in their improvement. Second, most people don't give much of a crap what you're going through until it's too late. And it makes sense. Every day we hear people talking about how bad they have it, and how much they're suffering. Many of them are just venting, and some are just trying to manipulate you. Its not clear to other people how bad a state you are in until you prove it by doing something you can't come back from.
