can someone explain this
@loobylouboti
@loobylouboti 4 роки тому
@@Bored817 It means when you avoid speaking up about something you feel is a problem to you (whether it be a problem you have with a friend/family member/neighbour/work colleague etc. Or indeed you need to confront and speak to someone about a problem you have at work, such as how things are ran/done there, for eg,) and instead of speaking up you say nothing and internalize what needs to be said, you create a 'war within yourself.' You have no doubt done this before, and when we do, notice how we ruminate over and over and over what we would like to say to the person (or what we feel needs to be said.) We find it difficult to let it go and we can consequently become resentful towards that person, and perhaps even resentful towards ourselves for not speaking up and out about how we feel and instead having put peace between that person and ourselves first, rather than choosing peace within ourselves as the priority. As the saying goes, 'What we resist, persists.' I hope that helps! (I've just woken up so maybe I should have waited until I was more awake to try to explain something, 😄)

I dropped out of my PhD program because I was so full of self doubt and shame. I never felt like I belonged and was so selfconscious about the fact that I was the only black person, I was in a big name program and everyone else had come from big name or ivy league schools, I never felt smart enough or really worthy and any mistake felt like a painful death. When I walked into a room I just felt like they could see my uneducated crackhead mother, my wayward father, my years of homelessness, and my then crumbling marriage. It was overwhelming and sadly I folded and now there is no space financially for me to go back. I don't have many regrets but this is definitely one. That I did fight and beat back my shame and fear.... Thank you so much for being who you are and making me face myself and grow.

Some people maybe admired your dedication and commitment to get so far under difficult circumstances. I would. I have the opposite problem of having many advantages and opportunities to do what I want but underachieving and ultimately failing to succeed in much at all! Every time I meet someone like you, I was the one who felt ashamed and unworthy. I guess the truth is, neither of us should beat ourselves up about our predicament and accept who and what we are. Maybe we are doing our best. More importantly, the fact you and I have sat and listened to this great chat means we are both still seeking knowledge and understanding to be the best for each other and for ourselves. Take care.

Hope you've went back to it now? Do it if it's still in your heart. Find a way. I'm Scottish and got to university after being married at 17, divorced with three daughters at 24. Started night class and ended up their.. With the encouragment of people I respected around me. Two men in particular, a tutor and community worker. Got in and confidence crashed. Did an aptitude test that convinced I was too stupid to be there, felt like a fraud. The woman said just don't go for jobs with aptitude tests, that flipped it around but still doubted a bit. Stuck it out and did it. The last year was like pushing a rock up a hill but got there. Had available parents to babysit and Scotland had free tuition at that point, so that made it work.

The sad thing is that to those people YOU are intimidating. You got to where you are DESPITE challenges. Challenges is what creates GREATNESS. If all their extra resources and opportunities were gone tomorrow could they motivate themselves enough to get where you were? Could they push themselves past the self doubt, angst, and pressure to give up? Not many people can. We live in a world that tells you trying is selfish. Wanting is elitist or it’s pointless because it’ll never happen. YOU are proof that if you try, it CAN and WILL happen. You don’t have the money to go back to school, most of us don’t. Take out the loans and bet on yourself. I just did something similar, and guess what? It worked out. Why? Because I had no other option. I didn’t give myself one. YOU deserve it. Don’t ever let anyone (including yourself) tell you otherwise.

I'm a big fan of Brené Brown so I thought I've probably heard this all before, but I found the interview generated novelty and creative energy through the chemistry of both Brené and Russell. Just both really open hearted with one another and vibing with each other in a very natural way. Russell definitely inserted his own thoughts and opinions, which was refreshing. All the advice is... you cannot. You have to disconnect with love. You cannot even hold someone accountable when they are in such denial and so detached from oneness they can’t even see the harm they are doing. I want to ask Brené about that.

I'm only 59 minutes in, so maybe one of them says this later on; but the reason (and I read this in a book, so it must be true) that having boundaries is good is because, although you must love everyone, you must include yourself as one of the people you love. Ergo, if someone treats you badly, it is your duty, as a person who loves everyone, to put yourself out of harm's way.

I never understood the true meaning of boundaries before. I aways thought it was a person's way to cop out, so they can walk away from a given situation or person; but now i understand it as a loving, emotionally healthy gift that you give to yourself, in such a way that it does not hurt anyone; and is in fact, very compassionate towards everyone involved!

37:41 to about 51:00 blew my mind, legitimately. I am also a recovering addict with a deep relationship with a Higher Power and a reverence for compassion, though compassion is, of course, an extremely difficult thing to achieve with consistency. I always love whatever Brene has to say, but her research and findings here, that practicing compassion for all must be linked to a strong sense and application of boundaries, is a game-changer for me. This has given me an entirely new tool and thought process to apply in my life and my recovery. Thank you both for sharing such an honest, important, and insightful discussion with us!

That quote, "when you avoid conflict to make peace with other people, you start a war within," really hit home. I'm also nervous, anxious, scared of confrontation. Instead, I tend to avoid certain people and situations, but that isn't always possible, or the healthiest approach for my mental state. Spot on discussion. What an awesome, challenging time to be alive to see all this change! Perspective helps not to judge others harshly. People don’t always have the same perspective we do. They’re seeing the world through their own lens (full of trauma, lacks, etc) and they act accordingly. If they haven’t worked on healing their wounds, they act from a traumatized place. I try to remember that when I get judgy or self-righteous.

From being a physician, to working with addicts... to owning his own failures.. I found one of his statements about trauma profound “Trauma is a disconnection from self” A lot of his work is in healing that pain caused by disconnect from oneself. And addressing that in addicts, as addicts are trying to numb that pain..,but once they have tools and support to discover their true selves, they can heal. INCREDIBLE. He also speaks to society’s 4 big alienation’s. 1) alienation from nature 2)alienation from self 3)alienation from others 4) alienation from meaning (true purpose, creativity etc Working those could transform our world and ourselves.
