The boat was towed to a nearby beach/island and later salvaged. Was this captain error or was it completely unavoidable? Let us know your thoughts! 👍

Terrible seamanship by the "captain." So many mistakes it's hard to list them. The biggest question is why do these idiots continue to put little kids (or anyone for that matter) in the bow in this situation? One kid has a PFD on, but it's not zipped. Basically useless.
@davidandalex2
@davidandalex2 Рік тому
Mostly operator. Too slow and trimmed all the way down (as well as load of people up front) were big issues here. Should have trimmed up to lift the bow and attacked it at a higher speed and moved a few passengers to the middle or back, although with this incredibly poor bow design I wonder if this situation is almost unavoidable in conditions like this.

Well unwritten rule: Don't use a lake boat outside of a lake. If you decide to ignore that rule, don't overload it and fill up the bow with people in a chop. Yes, it's pure Captain(or lack of one) error. As for the Aluminum boat, yes I would go thru with it. It would be a rough ride but if you know what you're doing it's just about impossible to sink it. Some bow riders are okay in the ocean. It all depends on the distance from the water line to the gunwale (freeboard). Lake boats have less freeboard as in this case. Lots of mistakes by this captain. Too many people on the boat, wrong boat for the conditions, people sitting on the bow and no one was wearing a life jacket. Good thing a rescue boat was near by or the results could have been fatal.
@SealofPerfection
@SealofPerfection Рік тому
If you're going to have a boat like that in a location like this, you should add a couple of heavier-duty pumps to it. The stock pumps on lake boats like these aren't meant to get rid of huge, instant influxes of water like you see here. They're meant to pump out rain water and keep them from sinking at the dock. They have no chance to keep up with such a large volume of water that is taken onboard basically instantaneously.

I have traveled through the Point Pleasant canal more times than I can remember. Back around 1971 or 72, my dad took our 23 wooden inboard through the canal during a tidal rush as bad as this. We had too many on board, not enough life jackets and it scared the crap out of everyone, especially my brother who was in 2nd grade at the time. We camped out in Barnegat Bay after getting through and waited for slack tide to make it back to the Manasquan River. We did much better than this boat as ours was seaworthy. But we learned a valuable lesson. As for this video, all captain error and 100% avoidable. The captain is always responsible. Know your boat, how to operate it, its limits, the waters you seek to travel, and always be looking out for your passengers.

@gsbtom66
@gsbtom66 Рік тому
I live and grew up here. It’s in theory a no wake zone but at full rip (which it was) it’s quite sporty as the boats heading up current kick up big wake just to make headway. Traveling down current is actually more dangerous in these conditions (as this boat was). Couple that with full weekend traffic makes for some very rough conditions. Right by the bridge in that video there’s a massive hole (drops about 15 feet). In this case, definitely captain error. Wrong boat for the conditions, and you definitely don’t slow down. Best bet coming into a trough is to kick the speed up a bit to get the bow up. And you definitely get everyone off the bow, to keep weight towards the stern. I find it rough in my 21’ Mako, which is far more seaworthy than that thing, and my kids are life jacketed always.
@Cody_aft
@Cody_aft Рік тому
For the second boat, should that have been going faster then? To stay on top on the waves? Seems like it would be challenging with a no wake zone, but then if everyone made wakes the water would be even worse. BTW legit questions, I mostly do lakes. Just asking to learn something.
@gsbtom66
@gsbtom66 Рік тому
A former marine state police told me once, it is technically no wake (you can get a ticket for traveling at speed), but at least down current you’re not going to make much wake, and you are allowed to handle your boat safely, even if it does create some wake. In general, it’s the up current boats that generate the swell you see, and I get it, as you can get pushed around by the waves, so you need some power for control. Edit: As for the second boat, assuming you mean the Key West, yes you do need to bump the throttle to kick the bow up. Slowing down, as he did, can actually hurt. It’s not a constant higher speed, but instead working the throttle to keep control.

@cannedjam6191
@cannedjam6191 Рік тому
Bilge pump will eventually get it out as long as more is not coming in. You can throw the boat in reverse to keep the bow from taking on more water once it is swamped. But he should have been on trim to keep his bow up and been going faster. Plowing his bow was avoidable in the first place. There is a sweet spot speed and angle of attack when you are in big swells.
@kathmandu1575
@kathmandu1575 Рік тому
Trim the motor so that the bow rides high up, on half a plane, and hope that the water is not too deep to swamp the boat before the bow-up angle can drain the water by gravity out of the rear scuppers. Not a good situation to be in to begin with - but that's the best shot at staying afloat if it happens, IMO.
