With the weather getting worse and with no where else to go, we entered into the Tampa entrance channel only to have the 650 foot ATB ahead of us turn around and go back out to the deep water anchorage because of the poor conditions.

Thank you very much for watching. Ocean going tugs rarely have flanking rudders, and we don't have them. I have a number of shipyard/drydock videos where you should be able to see what you are looking for. @@TimBatSea If you set up a decent trolling rig you could probably catch something for dinner most days. I would use a lure with a single big hook and fairly heavy tackle, and probably 50 lb test with 200 lb leader. A trolling spoon would be perfect for low maintenance, just drag it at almost any speed and they catch fish. Or offshore you could drag a lure with a hard plastic head and soft skirt. I had a Mylar skirt on one that we called El Matador, The Killer, when I lived in Costa Rica and fished a lot. It really was a killer. Mahi mahi and yellowfin tuna ate it all the time. You should be able to catch fish easily from your boat.

I have a question, when towing a barge in big waves like that, does the cable stretch a lot? Or do you feel it pulling back on the tug in the swells/waves?
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 місяці тому
Thank you for watching. That is exactly what we are trying to keep from happening. Usually, when at sea, we can dump a bunch of wire and the weight of the wire acts as a shock absorber. But we can't do that in shallow water so we have to reduce speed and manage the strain on the wire. CUOTO

If the weather was more severe would it change how the barge is towed. For example, would you tie it along side instead of towing it or would more severe weather only keep you from proceeding to your destination. Captain forgive me for not remembering the terminology from your previous videos.
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 місяці тому
Thank you for watching. Great questions and if everyone knew everything, no one would watch my silly videos. 😂 Yes. If the WX (weather) was any worse, we probably wouldn't have gone in. The next option would have been to use an assist tug sliwing the barge down in the stern of the barge whike we towed harder on it. That would straighten it out, but might not be an option if the swell was too much. CUOTO

@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 місяці тому
Thank you for watching and welcome to the channel. Yes, your plotter should have a vector line. If you have a heading sensor like a gyro or flux gate compass sending heading data to your plotter, you will need to add a vector line. Otherwise your GPS will try to determine your heading and will produce the vector line. You can adjust it by time or distance. @@TimBatSea I'll stick to sailing! A few years ago - around the 2:20 mark you can get a sense of the waves. Long Island Sound late fall. Rode out 3 days on anchor when the wind system clocked to the NE and it time to go home. ukposts.info/have/v-deo/oqKjanyJmG5yq5c.html

If you pulled with a bridle connected at two separate barge bow points would the barge stay inline with the tug boat?

So, how long a line to the barge in the channel? And if the barge climbs to windward, do you have to pull somewhat leeward?
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 місяці тому
Thank you for watching Russ. Yes. I believe I had about 2.5 lays out or roughly 1200 feet. It's a timing game just like a crosswind landing. If you time it right, the varge goes in-between the buoys. 😂. CUOTO

Yep. lived all over the DR...(diving) Running sportfishboats.. and they Can Get Loud and obnoxious with their suck as music...(lol)... I have pulled a Big Carver off the inside of Eggmont in one of those freaky offshore winds and seat state in Tampa Bay... (TowBoat US) I almost threw myself overboard trying to get a big float and line down to him.. Finally Got him off the beach and under his own power... (sucker stiffed me w/ a bad CC and my old Boss never followed up on it).. lol.. Stufff.. Good to see you doing your thing Tim... I could go to PR again.. Dunno what you would expect in NC but short tows... Wrong time of the year though... Take off a couple of months and go baha camping down in Mexico..

how do you make a "tight" turn into the channel - wouldn't the barge cut the corner due to the length of cable and risk getting grounded?
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 3 місяці тому
Thank you for watching Ed and welcome to the channel. We try to manage the wire by keeping it tight while going slowly and turning. But you are correct. If not done right, you run the risk of catching the bottom. CUOTO

At 7:23, does the barge change its orientation? To my untrained eye, it looks like it quickly lines itself up with the tug.

Would have thought you'd have snubbed her up a little more. Getting into harbours when the weather is bad can be tough. The water is boiling out at the mouth. Where I live in a harbour it can get nasty off the points. It's not big seas as we're off of a large straight. It can be 6-8 foot seas. It can blow 40 plus knots gusts up to 50-60.

Great video Captain, I have a question. Is towing by the wire more efficient when out in the open, and the notch is used for more control when coming into port? I guess I am only used to seeing tugs in the notch because I’m not offshore a lot. Thanks!

Steamed through it many times on USN ships. Often has really bad weather due to the Gulf Stream diverging out into the Atlantic. Other than that, just another chunk of ocean.
