I just want to acknowledge how good your English has become Mathias, you used to look to Tova, and now you help out Tova as well!! Ivar is going to grow up speaking two languages, such a lucky boy! I must say, he's really coming into himself and is his own person. He has strong opinions and likes, and dislikes, and is a very happy little boy. I like how he follows you around, watching what you are doing with the animals, and he's so comfortable with the animals. He's going to be a very good farmer and land manager in his own right one day.

Justin Rhodes channel showed him putting pigs in his woods for two weeks in each spot to root up the ground, eat brush. Fertilize and distribute dormant grass seed. He would also sow grass seeds when he moved them. He cut down small trees to allow in more sun and ended up adding several acres of grazing land to his homestead.

Hi, I don`t know that very much grass and other plants will grow in the forest if you don`t take down some trees, as there will maybe not be enough light. If you take down some trees to get light, my suggestion is to spread manure, in winter, from the chickens and ashes from the oven in the lighter areas you have made. The chicken`s manure will also give you free grass seeds. I suggest not too much manure or ashes too close to the trees, as I think they do not like too much calcium. Then the sheep can go in the spring and summer and roam around when there is more to eat... At least, this way no need for fencing during winter. Forgot to say, more and more people with forests here in Sweden are coming around to the opinion that a forest should have a good mix of leafy trees and winter green trees. This gives much better conditions for insects and birds, they need the help, and they also help keeping down the number of insects hurting the trees. Thinning out winter green trees will also make the trees that are left much bigger and more useful for lumber.

It is so good to see such a healthy, energetic, and happy boy enjoying the outdoors, the animals, and fresh air. He is growing fast; another birthday is coming soon. The weather here in the NE, US has been strange too. We had a late start to winter and now the temperatures can fluctuate from 11 to -20 in a span of 8 hours. In the past, people used pleached hedges for permanent field borders, but movable fencing was made. Called hurds, or hurdles, they were panels woven from willow, hazel, or split wood. It seems you could make frames to hold your wire fencing instead. It would be lighter. Simply connect the end pieces of each frame at the top and bottom to form paddocks. Improving your land, your soils are almost certainly deficient in Boron. But adding rock dust from the quarry that provides your local government with crushed stone, sea salt, and biochar to the land should help. See “producing high bionutrient crops” on youtube by Living web farms if you’re at all interested. Your primary crops are pasture plants. I would also suggest researching the native biome in your region before the forests were cut and replanted with conifers. You might need to reseed some native plants for your sheep.

Love your videos always, but your filmography of the northern lights made my heart sing. Just so beautiful and magical. I also was going to suggest Justin Rhodes as a UKposts channel you could watch, as he uses the grazing methods you are talking about. If you think the forest area wIll support future pasture growth in so much shade, then is it possible in winter to use the same sort of poly portable fencing that you already use in summer, but line it with very light hessian material? That way you wouldn’t need the electricity in winter to keep the fence ‘live’, the hessian would stop the animals from getting tangled in the wire and it should still be very light and portable. Here in Australia they use hessian material in this way in lengths of more than 100 metres, staked out into large chutes to direct stock into yards - I can’t see why you couldn’t adapt it to help you in your situation? It’s also made from natural materials not plastic. Good luck with it all. Can’t wait to see your future progress. 👍🙂

Awww precious little Ivar. What a happy, healthy, loving child! He is soooo Blessed to be with his devoted parents. Your parenting skills are awesome and your love for each other is obviously enriching your relationship. I do wish to encourage both of you to continue each other and be grateful that you found each other to share this lifestyle together. Going on 80 years in compromised health is difficult for me work to support myself. I empathize with your difficulties in life; it was not easy rearing 4 children in a large city in the US. Nevertheless, our simple meagher lifestyle as a family taught appreciation, love, and values to all 4 of my children. Ivar's experiences growing up in nature with both of you is building incredible character for his future life. Be proud of yourselves. Never allow negative comments to discourage you. Both of you are working hard and learning valuable self-sufficient information and knowledge. Be proud of your success. God is with you and I'm certainly praying for you. I am curious, how do we send little gifts to y'all? I sew toys for my young grandchildren and have books, from when I taught young children, that I would love to share with Ivar. Ivar is much more interested in throwing snow and being adorable than bale grazing. LOL I know Justin Rhodes uses chain link fencing sections on wheels to mob graze his sheep. Not sure if the forest would be level enough to keep the sheep contained, but might be worth a try. Glad everyone is returning to health. Ivar's laugh is so sweet. Good morning from South Africa. To solve the problem with the earthing of your electric fencing....take an old piece of metal sheeting half meter by half meter and connect the ground wire to it. Throw some salt on it and bury in the snow. You are such an inspiration. Love the way you work with the wood.

How many sheep? / Fence panels with footers are easily moved and usually about 8ft long. So 8 panels could make 16x16' temporary enclosure. By moving three sides each day you can systematically cover ground.

I have done ecological study's in my area. Decrease the amount of tree's and this will allow more sun light to reach the forest floor. This allows smaller ground foliage to receive more sun light that the tree's now are absorbing. Also reintroduce the foliage you want the sheep to forage on by transplanting from around the area. This takes 3 years with no grazing to make a viable area. I recommend 3 area's with good seed producing foliage that will reseed from the sheep's digestion and natural seed distribution.

Do a split rail worm fence. You have the log building skills needed to split rails and you have plenty of trees. It would do what you need it to do if you made a series of paddocks with it and then just turn the sheep out into the paddock you want them concentrating on at the time. You need nothing other than the wood split rails as far as hardware goes and it blends into the landscape in a forest really well. Felling the trees where you need rails would also open up the canopy a bit so you get more light on your eventual growing areas. Bonus, it looks really nice too when done right.

You can clear some of the Timber out and make some Meadows or clearings and start feeding them in those areas. and you can mix those two bales of hay together if they prefer one over the other and reduce waste further. Your boy is being raised in a unique environment and it will be interesting to see what he thinks about it when he's an adult. Blessings to you and yours.

I'm glad you guys are feeling better. We have had a very strange winter here in Vermont as well, January was cold and dry, February we had a couple of big snow storms but also some major thaws and rain storms. March started off cold and snowy but today it was 63 degrees and we lost a lot of our snow. I miss winter and I'm not ready for spring yet. The chipmunks we feed during the summer have woken up during these warm spells and stopped by for some nuts.. a very strange winter indeed.

There is a practice similar to what you are doing called swath grazing. It is best done where the winter is dry and cold. In this method the farmer takes the hay down either mechanically or with a scythe, and then rakes the rows of 'swaths' to make larger deeper swaths. These swaths are left on the ground, and the shepherd or cattleman brings the animals to the swath, breaks the snow, and shows them what is there. From this training, the animals learn to do the breaking on their own, and to recognize what the swath looks like under the snow. Something similar to this could be placed in long swaths that make paths in the forest. I don't know how to resolve your fencing issue. My only thought there is that maybe it is time to consider getting and training a dog like a border collie to herd them and keep them contained.

It's amazing to me how you can do such hard work and not get discouraged. I love your videos and enjoy seeing a slice of what the life of my Swedish and Finnish ancestors lived thru. Your little man is so adorable, and clearly living as you do is extremely healthy for children. Thank you for sharing another glimpse of your life.

It's so amazing to see how far your homestead has come. And how your little family is growing. Thank you Both for sharing. I noticed all the trees that are some what close to each other. So maybe do a board tide to trees that make a fence. look almost like a rail fence but the trees in the forest are the post for the boards to be tide to. and if there is too much space tween the tree put an X in the middle to hold the wood rail.

I don't know if you have this kind of thing, but in the States we have something called a cattle panel kind of fencing. Some with larger holes are for cows, but there are also some with smaller holes for sheep or hogs. It's usually a 16 foot long solid panel. We have used 4 of them connected with clips at the corners to make a little box pen that is pretty easy to drag sideways to a new spot in the summer. My parents used this with turkeys we raised to be able to move them every day and it works fine for almost any animal. I doubt they would drag nicely together in deeper snow, but it wouldn't be that hard to unclip the corners and just pick up each panel and stick it in the snow again in a new location. Since they are stiff all on their own, with the corners clipped together, we didn't need any posts or anything to hold it up which makes it easy to move many times. That's the best idea I could come up with! P.S. I really love all your videos and how similar many of the challenges with weather, snow, and cold are to my area. Watching your life always brings me peace.

awww, as soon as i see him, i am smiling so big !! You two are doing a fantastic job of parenting, in my humble opinion. Yes, spring is in the air. We on the other hand had 8 snows this winter, but only 2 or 3 the past winters. But, it rained off each, before the next came, which makes it easier for working around outside. We ordered another 16 cord hardwood to process , which we both love doing, i am nearly 70, him 62. Take care & see u all next time xo p.s- i don't have any ideas how to pen & feed the sheep, but makes sense, for them to eat & poop different places, every few days. xo , oh yes, loved seeing the 2 kitties, sleeping close, but don't remember seeing the doggies , hmm. xo

My experience is more with horses in a herd. I have two ideas: 1. maybe picking a few (3 or 4?) areas with potential to become meadows in the forest. Use the surrounding trees as "fence posts", weaving a not-too-dense natural fence with branches/brambles between the trees where it's easy. Closing the circle off with other wire (?) fencing where the gaps are too wide/open. In summer you remove some of the fencing or leave it open so the sheep can wander in and out freely. 2. Using some kind of leash on some of the sheep (maybe the mature, herd leaders?) by stretching a rope between two trees that are far apart, a ring that can move freely along the rope, combined with a collar and leash (attached to the ring) that's not too long, so that they can't entangle themselves. The hope being the younger sheep will stick around with the herd-leaders... not sure sheep can tolerate collars though... this wouldn't need a fence and you could change location daily. one sheep per rope.
