We couldn't believe how humongous this cave actually is! The 1.25 mile hike along the cavern path seemed longer than that to us, but perhaps it was because we stopped so many times to set up the camera on a tripod and take yet another breathtaking 30-second exposure. The snack bar inside the cave was closed, so we were not only starving but exhausted by the time we made it back above ground! We highly recommend this "customizable cave adventure" to anyone, since you can take it at your own pace. Watch the video for more tips and what to expect on your trip to Carlsbad Cavern, or just enjoy the show!

About Us:
Hi! We're Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We built a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible. Bussy was never meant to be parked in a driveway, waiting for weekend trips or holiday getaways. After we finished the build, we packed everything we kept into the bus and drove away from our old house and into the world of off-grid living, aka boondocking, and endless travel adventures!
Since we planned to be boondocking the majority of the time, we made choices such as; a 100-gallon water tank, an Air Head composting toilet, a 1500w solar power system with 1000Ah in AGM batteries, etc. We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, from our Skoolie Build Series, to infinite buslife adventures beyond!
Mike & Kerry

My grandfather was born in 1887 and traveled from Illinois to Carlsbad NM to be a cowboy. He was there before all of the hoopla that surrounds the place now. The cowboys would go up there for entertainment once in a while to watch the bats come out at twilight. But they did not venture into the cavern as it was very dangerous and they heard several people had gotten lost or hurt in there. He loved his life out there but the allure of my grandma brought him back to Illinois and they married in 1910. He was such a horse whisperer that when a carload of wild horses from the west would come in to Quincy Illinois the sellers would hire him to ride the horses out of the boxcars and gentle them down. He did that until they quit bringing the horses in when tractors became popular. He never owned a vehicle. He believed in horses and buggies and used them daily for farming until he quit farming in the mid 40s and then my dad and/or his siblings would drive grandpa and grandma wherever they wanted to go. He traveled out there with my great grandparents blessing at the young age of 16. They must have thought he was very capable at that age. His application to be a cowboy was showing them what he could do with horses. He passed! I've been there twice and wondered at his courage to do something like that when he was so young. He got do do what most of us only dream of.

Hey guys my name is Nick from Pink Oklahoma. I'm from the Carlsbad area. We would go to the caverns every year and walked in and out. We always looked forward to But it wasn't until I was old that I realized why my dad insisted that we always walked back out. It makes for quiet and peaceful ride home!!! LoL I love your show keep up the good work.

So many interesting caves in the Guads. That's impressive that south Louisiana was reached on amateur radio. SAR, 4x4, hikers, etc. regularly use amateur radio, and cell coverage can be non-existent, overloaded, down, etc.

I have not done the Carlsbad caverns I think since I was pregnant with my daughter and she's 33 and I was 8 months pregnant with her when I did the three hour walk the full tour they almost did not let me do it because I was so far along my pregnancy and so hugely pregnant but I told him I was good to go and I made the entire walk with no issues that was back when you walked all the way down and you walked all the way back up you didn't take the elevator back way that was the halfway point that was the main reason they let me do it because they did have the elevator where if I need it I could at the halfway point I can take the elevator up but I did the full walk which surprised everybody cuz I was about eight and a half months pregnant doing it course I look like I was ready to pop at the time but I enjoyed it so glad y'all had a fun time on your tour of it. This brought back so many memories for me thank you all so much for this one and brought back so many good memories from so long ago. It was before I became disabled and now I'm in a wheelchair when I'm out doing stuff so I don't think I would be able to go back there unfortunately which is really sad because it was such a beautiful place. God bless yall.

We loved our walk through the caverns. We took the elevator down. You definitely need a tripod for photography down there. My trick for unlighted areas was the BULB setting with a cable shutter release and off camera manual flash. I would point the camera at what I wanted then fire off the flash several times to paint the area in light, then release the shutter. I also took a bunch of pictures at 200 to 400 mm to get features on the cavern ceilings way up in the air. I liken the caverns to being inside about 5 or 7 superdomes all together at the same time. Thanks for the show, enjoyed it.

that thing with appointments is the same at mammoth caverns in Kentucky and Alcatraz island... I have a stalagmites from Carlsbad caverns my mom and dad got it in the 1950s for their wedding trip. I think in the 1950s they were still doing some construction on some of the trail and obviously they sold the stalagmites that had to be removed for the trails and sold them for money to pay for the trails and upkeep and such. If we ever get an EMT that CDs are probably the only way we can communicate
