What Electricians Hate About Outdoor Installations.

The rise in renewable technology adoption necessitates installing more equipment on the exteriors of UK homes. This trend is poised to accelerate following the recent directive that solar storage batteries should be installed outside rather than in loft spaces. This shift presents a new challenge for many electricians, who may be required to install everything from consumer units to heat pumps in unfamiliar outdoor settings. The question arises: should new homes include a dedicated plant room, and how do we adapt older homes to meet these new requirements? To explore these questions, we're joined by the team from Luceco, the pioneers behind the outdoor consumer unit.

In tonight's program, we're excited to reveal the eFIXX Awards 30 Under 30 winners, presented in association with Luceco.
We will also reconnect with the past winner, Harvey Canning, to learn about his journey.

Congratulations to all the winners of the 30 under 30 awards. A wonderful Efixx initiative I love and support. Also well done to all the judges can not be easy picking winners! In terms of the wider chat on outdoor switchgear in specific. Some surprising views especially in terms of caravan parks. As someone who maintains those areas now and then, they are not allowed to connect to PME systems and require earth rods and RCDs. Because..... Its risky using electrical equipment and switchgear outdoors. You answered your own question by accident I think. Metal switchgear on a TN supply fed direct from a supplier fuse via henley blocks can have a disconnection time of up to 5s. I suggest people watch David Saverys video on the poor kid in the pub car park and think about their views on this again. We all learn together.

The tragic circumstances which led to the death of Harvey Tyrell were caused by the horrendous standard of the electrical installation. Nothing to do with issues related to the electrical supply network or changes to regulations would have saved him. The practices of the "electrician" caused the death. The issue of metal electrical equipment outdoors needs wider debate. To single out a consumer unit is shortsighted. There are quite a few metal EV chargers on the market which incorporate PEN fault protection, but this only disconnects the cable going to the charger. Heat pumps, now solar batteries, inverters, light fittings, gate motors all with earthed metal work.

As well as the earthing system the switchgear is plastic and tested every 2 years. I'm pretty sure outdoor lighting in a public place needs to be RCD protected and with street lighting/posts a large amount of metal is in contact with true ground. Plus, you can't destroy the IP rating by flipping a lid with a single finger. I don't think Gary's comments were valid and I hope they paid him well for his integrity.

@@efixx its almost like you have seen a video of mine about to drop around heat pumps, EV chargers and more. Selection and erection is the responsibility of the electrician. Same as the horrendous circumstances in those case above. Using pollution degree 2 metallic consumer units in outdoor areas on PME supplies is several levels of poor. No wider debate is needed on that so far as any responsible electrician would decide. Certainly not this one. I would investigate the differences between a final circuit and distribution circuit along with 5s and less on disconnection times as a strong steer. Along with additional protection. Its a culmination of several wrong steps in products used in that application that can result in electricians sitting in horrendous circumstances if the worst is to happen. We can do better and learn together. Here for that and some. Hopefully industry sees sense. I have a feeling based on discussions Ive had it will. This goes much wider into street based charging and communal solar setups. But as a basic principle on metal outdoor consumer units on PME systems hard no especially with 60898 protective devices. The rest I will save for my content. I would say it is short sighted not to understand why its different to other outdoor equipment especailly as EV chargers point people to reset breakers if the equipment has issues. Mine does. A heat pump doesnt. Solar inverter does! Which is another area I have concerns but thankfully most are generally final circuits. The larger risk with normal electrical equipment is as it always was. Very low probability. Which brings us back to selection and erection. What a great word that is for hanging stuff on walls lol.

@@Aaron-ep1ik The topic is the key aspect and you make a great point on the changes brought to our regs after some horrendous circumstance. I hope we dont have to wait for that again to stop this nonsense. Thats my hill on the topic and I am happy to die on it. Doing this day to day and the responsibility that comes with it sharpens the mind that is for sure. Outside of that Gaz is a legend and the Efixx team I just disagree entirely with this.

@@electrician247 Gary has clearly done a lot for the community and I have benefited from the technical content they used to put out, but sometimes as with other influencers there can be a vested interest. Efixx has a great opportunity to positively influence the trade and it's frustrating to see a brand many respected go this route.

What you failed to recognise was that a heat pump or other powered electrical equipment outside isn't supplied off of the Henley blocks. AC and batteries are outside but are supplied via plastic isolators and don't have a metal flap the user is likely to touch in the event of a fault. There is clearly more risk with EVs than is currently recognised with other outdoor devices and that's why there's a whole section in the regs for it.
@Aaron-ep1ik

The caravan parks use plastic enclosures and TT supplies. Metal outdoor fuseboxes make a mockery or the O-PEN devices and the regulations for EVCP's. Standard breakers are only rated to -5'C, are BG covering and testing down to -25'C like is available from other manufacturers?

The trouble is that there is such a wide variation of "best practice" interpretation and installation techniques it is very difficult to rely just on Regs/Building Codes etc for guidance. I think you relly need to have an Engineering Hat On, not necessarily and "Electrical Hat" Ask yourself, how would a DNO Representaive react to opening a Meter Box and finding all that stuff connected. Maybe the answer is actually reduce the size of the Meter Box so it can ONLY have the DNO Equipment Fitted. This would please a lot of customers who do not want to see such huge boxes attacched to the house!
