Lost my mother to suicide induced by schizophrenia. I was 7 and she was 36. She set herself on fire which I witnessed. Absolutely tragic, for no fault of hers. EDIT: To people commenting that they are so appalled that I shared my story so publicly, that it's probably a lie or a joke, and that I just want attention, you are wrong. I am 32 now and I don't go around talking about this with everyone I know in real life. I only felt comfortable sharing this here because I get to maintain my anonymity, I see so many people sharing their experiences as well and I am also not ashamed of it. I am not very active on UKposts and I don't really have anything to gain by making up sad stories over random videos for attention.

My mother has this disease, We are from lower middle class family in india. In my family most don't know English. My father have took her to hospital and they gave her a medicine which she needs to take everyday. But she is very agressive and doesn't take the medicine daily. My father is strict and he is also agressive. In my home there are fights and arguments almost everyday. I knew her disease because I search the medicine on google and after watching this video most of the symptoms match to her. I just want to grow up fast and take to a good hospital in which the doctor can explain her the disease.

They should say this is one of the scariest illnesses you can ever face. The strange symptoms - voices, hallucinations--make you fearful to tell others. So not only are you facing these strange symptoms but you face them alone because you're scared to share With others.

My schizophrenia isn’t active at the moment so I am capable of living a normal life thanks to medication. Schizophrenia doesn’t have to be a constant struggle (contrary to belief). The only downside right now for me is loneliness.

My mom had paranoid schizophrenia, I had an interesting childhood to say the least... When I grew to adulthood I took legal guardianship of her and got her on antipsychotics (risperidone), it was amazing, like meeting her for the first time. I got a good decade of time with her in this better state of mind and it was great, I was so happy to see her live so well and so stable under my guardianship... She passed away due to complications with strokes a few years ago. I love my Mom, even though she made a lot of crazy decisions for us throughout my childhood, she still showed me unconditional love and taught me how to be a good man.

Had a friend growing up that I was really close to. He always kind of seemed a little off but I didnt really think anything was wrong with him. Fast forward 6 years, we lost touch but I ran into his parents and they told me that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. I was shocked but it made sense. Hes doing good now and he even has a newborn baby and girlfriend.

I've been searching about Schizophrenia and I feel like internet is listening to me or watching me, how is this on timing?

My symptoms became noticeable at the early to mid 2015, but peaked around the early months of 2016. Because of how vivid my hallucinations were, I ended up so paranoid I tried to end myself on two occasions. Subsequently, I started hearing voices from different people on campus in my head and it tormented me so much I heard a guys voice on campus and decided to act out on it, I just wanted to make it stop, and ended up being stupidly violent (and paying the consequences). These days I get annoyingly playful but I keep negative emotions far away, and I've turned to exercise and meditation because I didn't necessarily like the medications I was on. I don't want to sound naïve, but I'd like to see how far a positive attitude and my mental strength can take me, however, I won't advise anyone to stop their medications like I have. I wish us all strength and good vibes, schizophrenic or not.

My boyfriend has schizophrenia. It's a rough ride, especially after years of taking the meds. Thank you for helping to un-Hollywood the facts, because the general public's perception of this and other mental illnesses are so ludicrously dramatic, it's almost impossible to have a civil conversation about it sometimes.

It's been more than 10 years and my mother also has schizophrenia but the way it affects her is a bit different. She didn't tell my father for 2-3 years which led to delay of treatment and affected her even more. When my father finally started noticing that yes there's something wrong, she was taken to the doctor but untill then she lost the control over her mind. I was only 4 or 5 and I don't have many memories of us being happy together since at the time she was just not there anymore, she was just completely lost and I couldn't help her. We struggled a lot with everyday work and my older sister from a young age had to look after me. I don't have any memories of her (my mother) where she actually was okay. We are still struggling but we are just taking care of each other. My mother is always talking to someone by herself, tells me how some people visited her when no one came home. She sometimes asks me which year is it and then says it's 2003 or 1999. She sometimes even forgets that I exist. It's been so hard but seeing her struggling knowing what she's going through hurts even more. We know we can't be of much help except loving her and helping her as much as we can. I hope the discrimination against people who are suffering mentally can stop. I have seen people look at us in a weird whenever they see my mother outside. It's infuriating and sometimes makes me feel like crying. I hope everyone's safe and if anyone's suffering from this or and other problem can be happy. Please look after yourself and your loved ones. I just wanted to share after reading so many stories. ✌️😄

Schizophrenia is so tricky… I didn’t show many symptoms when i was young, but as i turned 20 it was painfully obvious. I was terrified to get diagnosed with it because of the stigma and the completely false stereotypes of people with schizophrenia. They prescribed me with an anti-psychotic called Invega, and it works, but it made me feel absolutely nothing. Any spark I had before was completely gone. My mom made me keep getting it because it “leveled me out” but really it turned me into a husk of a human. I can’t remember most of it other than what I wrote down in a journal. I really hope they get better treatment someday. Great video… pretty accurate

My brother is schizophrenic and it breaks my heart to see him and my parents suffer because of this disease. He was a very talented and joyful child, but this disease has transformed him into a completely different human being. He often gets violent and starts beating me and my parents. He is 22 and my parents are old. He then cries and gets sad about his condition. We've been giving him treatment since past 6-7 years but his condition doesn't improve. Thank you for this important video! I’m so bad right now! Before I went to the university, I worked 1 year at the hospital as a volunteer and I met there a lot of people with schizophrenia. All the nurses told me every time I met a patient with schizophrenia, that I would have to care of myself. And this people was the nices I met there. It’s so sad when people stigmatise others for something they can’t do anything about.

I remember finding out my older brother was suffering from this disease. I couldn’t comprehend it. Then over the next 10 years or so I watched him deteriorate. This is my hero who I looked up to and grew up playing videogames and wrestling with. To me, mental illness is the worse disease because there’s no empathy for it and these people struggle alone in many cases. They’re left behind and forgotten about by their families.

This video was very informative. I have a lot of similar things going on and have ever since I had a bad mental break caused by painkillers a doctor put me on at 17. I was so paranoid that I couldn't touch my phone without having panic attacks and I was having hallucinations where I would hear someone say something extremely rude or yell my name from another room. It wasn't just in my head, I could physically hear things which I never experienced before. After being hospitalized, I was put on a psychiatric drug used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and a range of other things. I've never been diagnosed with anything officially but I have my first visit with a counselor tomorrow. I'm hopeful that whatever it is I'm going through is real and not just me overreacting or being delusional

Schizophrenia is certainly a very distressing illness. I’m glad I have been able to manage mine well enough, but sadly my mother is permanently in a mental health facility. My aunt has schizophrenia and my mom suffered from bipolar disorder, so mental illness runs through my family. Growing up I never understood what they were going through but this video gave me a better insight.

One of my best friends sent me this today saying he watched it and that it helped him understand my diagnosis a lot more. :) I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia since I was in my late teens and am turning 24 in a week. I have never had someone do outside research into my diagnosis so they can best understand. I felt so loved in that moment.

As someone with schizophrenia, this video is so heart warming with its message to break the stigma and have people understand it. I actually have to hide my diagnosis from my employer due to an episode not counting as a reasonable use of sick hours.

Something about schizophrenia that I think a lot of people aren’t aware of is how susceptible people with the disorder are to abuse, especially intimate partner abuse. Abusers can seek out people with schizophrenia because they find them easier to control-by manipulating their reality, by convincing them that only they [the abuser] can be trusted to tell apart what’s real from what’s not. That kind of forced dependence is really frightening and difficult to break out of...it’s a whole different breed of awful.

Thank you. My brother had schizophrenia...we’re 99% sure... about 15 years after he took his own life I’m finally able to watch things like this. Obviously it took a long time. It was too hard before. Videos like this help me understand a little more what he was going thru. I was the first person he came to when he first started having hallucinations and I wasn’t there for him like my older brother and parents were, and it kills me. I've been living with schizophrenia for 3 years because of trauma when I was a kid, it sucks, pisses me off, and I want nothing to do with it... And then there's instances where I feel at loss, idk. Nobody will read this, but never wish this on anyone, I have 6 voices and it sucks. (Edit) so this comment got some likes, wasn't expecting it but hey looks like people don't really understand the turmoil of the illness on clear fronts. Thanks for this video. I have bipolar 2 and BPD but I actually had the schizoaffective disorder diagnose for 5 years until it was ruled out. But I still experience psychosis on a regular bases. It’s the most severe mental health symptom I have ever experienced, sometimes you just want to end things because psychosis is just unbearable. However it’s still possible to live a relatively normal life. The main issue is the stigma though, us people with psychosis are not monsters, in fact, just imagine what is like to go through such horrors every day, and still going to work, take care of your family and have a social life on top of that. We’re are brave people and we need to be proud of ourselves.

I met a girl while in a longterm mental facility with schizophrenia. She was so bright, cheerful, and honestly adorable. She was hilarious and was such a beacon of sunshine to everyone around her. I had many personal talks with her and she was so open about her illness; I got such great energy from her those couple months I spent with her, so many honest chats about our lives and illnesses while put in an optimistic point of view. No matter the struggles she faced, she was sweet and kind to everyone despite it. I miss playing rounds of hang man with her where we'd secretly diss other patients with little inside jokes, lots of nuance to that sort of thing in a place like that where everyone is weird and hates each other. Not many people in there were up to speed with me or my humor, but she was. I hope she's doing well, miss her lots, even years after not seeing her.

My father was schizophrenic and narcissistic. I want to say that while everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves, that even people with mental disorders can do bad things or be bad people, and deserve the same treatment when they are bad people. Mental illness is not an excuse to do bad things, and if you have a meltdown or hurt someone's feelings, you need to apologize. Once again I'm not taking away from this videos message about being sensitive to other people's situations and stuff, just adding something I think is important.

These kinds of videos are great because it allows non psych or therapists to understand this kind of disorders. ❤

I actually have a friend who has the condition. She’s honestly one of my best friends going on 6 years. :)

My great-uncle grew up in an age where there was no treatment for schizophrenia and his behaviour led him to becoming ostracised by his family, he killed himself at 50 by walking off the harbor. His body wouldn't have been found if his dog had not stood by the pier barking. I watched this to try to understand him as his story is a painful memory for my grandmother and great-aunt, so I don't want to ask too many questions. He was a deeply troubled man according to my mother and would turn to alcohol often, he never married or had any real relationships, but he was very close with his dog and my great-aunt would try to help him sometimes, so he wasn't completely alone. This video just made me kind of emotional about it, I wish he had gotten the care he needed so that he could have had a good life.

Yesterday, i had my psychology exam where we had a question about schizophrenia. I had the opportunity to read about it in college as a minor. Thank you Ted Talk for this video which gave life to the content so beautifully.

I was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Anxiety and Depression 8 years ago. I knew I had different ways of perceiving life long beforehand and felt sad for my eccentric ways. I got by. Eventually trauma, drugs and other factors caught up to me and I became homeless. Stuck in my delusion and grandiose perception I lost a lot of what I cared about in the reality we exist in. I ruined my connections and sat in my mess and pain for a long time. Eventually I got better and now work full time in mental health, sharing my story and hearing other peoples stories of struggles and hopes. I think I feel more human because of it. Still fighting. Much love to my fellow humans

I'm a 39 year old dude, laid back and live a stress free life but had a manic bipolar psychotic schizophrenic episode last year. I feel like I have a justifiable number of reasons that led me to this happening. Mainly, seeing through all the lies in the media and governments around the world. Anyway, I was hospitalized for 10 days and refused medication except for a few days when it was mandatory. I was let out and it honestly took me the better part of a year to get back to feeling like my normal self. I still have wild thoughts when I think deeply but I know how to differentiate between the rational and irrational ones. Its like my mind has been opened to another dimension of reality that nobody else notices whatsoever and its tough to think ill be alone in my thoughts for the rest of my life.

I dated someone with this disease. It breaks my heart to think that this was the third person in the two of us. I havent met a better human being than him in my whole life. I have loved him when i was with him and after too. But it just wasnt possible to save someone like that. It was like i was trying to cure someones cancer with love. He didnt know better either. He said I felt safe and I just thought if he goes somewhere its the end of us. We only got perfectly along when i developed depression. I was 18 he was 22. There were so many sadness attached to the most beautiful man I have ever known. We had to let go.

My older sister was diagnosed with schizophrenia around the age of 18, my parents were immigrants and were not aware of all options of treatment for this illness. The doctor just kept prescribing her with antipsychotic drugs. It’s been 10 years since she’s been on those drugs with very little change, if anything I think it made her condition worse overtime. As far as I’m aware the GP never referred her for any form of CBT and only when I made a complaint, then he went to refer her to a “psychiatrist” who was no help at all and even told me that my sister will never fully recover and that the sister I once knew will never resurface. I’m thinking of even sueing this medical clinic for medical negligence. This video was very informative, thank you for the video!

I’ve been dealing with the psychosis for a while now. Ever since I was a small child I’ve always seen things a little different in my life that didn’t seem normal to the people around me. I was always perceived as a very sweet kid but no one could ever read me or my expressions. For a while I didn’t know what was wrong and I thought I was a monster or something by the way people treated me because I didn’t wear my emotions on my sleeve. Through middle school and high school I started to experience really bad episodes of psychosis. At the time I didn’t know what it was and thought I was just going crazy or was haunted if you believe in that stuff. My environment wasn’t the best at the time and it played a factor. An episode for me would typically look like sitting in my room for hours in the dark practically immobilized by fear thinking demons are surrounding me and doing nothing but staring for hours and hours upon the end at me. Another example that involves the sensory part of the illness would be me sitting in my parked car at target because I wanted to buy some things for myself again immobilized by fear knowing Im alone because I drove there alone yet suddenly hearing all types of low whispers from all around me and suddenly appears four other people in my car sitting with me and I know it’s all in my head but it’s feels so real to me because I can hear them I can see them and I can feel them touching me but I know it’s not real. All I wanted to do was go shop at target but now here I am an hour later still still sitting in my car trying to control an episode. We are average people just like you it’s just hard for us sometimes no we’re not bad people we just have something going on that we try our best to control alone or with a small support system because if we tell somebody they think we’re crazy even some of you reading this might not even believe me and might think I’m crazy but that’s OK. If you have a problem I really hope you go seek help and I want you to know that you are not alone🤍🤍🤍🧸 PS yes I’ve been to multiple psychiatrist and therapist yes I’m doing OK I have a good job at a bakery that I love, I live on my own in my apartment with my pet snake and dog and I’m gonna go get a kitten soon🐈‍⬛ I love to meditate and live a normal loving life I do still have episodes but I have much more control now and yes they are still scary sometimes but I would never hurt a fly and in rl you wouldn’t even know I had a problem if I didn’t tell you bc that’s how good some of us are at hiding it. in-other words, ciao.

If you google their hallucinations, it's kinda scary. All these signs, voices, talking eyes even dead people. Non of these symptoms mean they are crazy, we should promote socializing them and shift more positive image.

i’ve lost two family members to schizophrenia that have cut contact off. i’ve been showing signs since i was a young teen and i don’t know if i’ll ever be ready to face this in my 30s or maybe earlier. it’s a blessing to be mentally healthy and many take it for granted.

My aunt was diagnosed with brain tumor 20 years ago. She developed schizophrenia after the operation that took place back then. Her condition has been deteriorating ever since. She is so violent at almost all the time and has caused a lot of physical and mental harm to her family members which includes me, my mother and my grandmother. We live in a 3rd World country and seems like the doctors can't really do anything about it except prescribing more and more meds and shots. Sometimes her violence is so unbearable we have to send her away to mental hospital for months and it sure is expensive. She basically has no life at this point and it breaks my heart to say it out loud, but everyone in the family is waiting for her to die. It's true. As heartbreaking as it sounds, her family members very often wish she were dead so she wouldn’t have to suffer this much and make the whole family suffer along with her. My mom said she was a lovely person when she was healthy. I just feel so sad for her and it also makes me wonder if living and dealing directly with a schizophrenic person all of my life, I might go crazy one day too. Not to mention, other members of my family have hardly ever been happy in their own lives too. I'm sorry, there's no happy ending in this comment. Love and hugs to y'all.

My grandma had schizophrenia, my mom has schizophrenia, and my little sister shows signs of schizophrenia especially when she was much younger but is doing much better now, i definitely have the milder symptoms. Yes i agree it's genetic and environmental.

There’s this young teen novel called Made You Up by Francesca Zappia, about a schizophrenic teenager and her struggles with hallucinations. I think it’s a pretty good book for the younger audience if you want to teach them about schizophrenia

My good friend has this bad and he’s been put away. He suddenly at 29-30 years old began having hallucinations and thinking everyone was going to get him and talk about him and he wanted to hurt them. I pray he gets the right help and tries to get better

I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia but I was very lucky to be raised in a very understanding community, often times I was treated differently but nowhere near the harassment and antagonism that is unfortunately experienced by people with the same conditions

A teacher/librarian recommended me to read behavioral psychology books in jr high to understand what my dreams meant. It found my answers. I was not a nutcase. I just want to point out that psychosis (hallucinations and delusions) can be seen in other disorders as well, such as Bipolar 1, depression, anxiety, and borderline personality disorder. Just because someone has hallucinations and delusions doesn’t mean they are schizophrenic! That’s another big stigma about schizophrenia.

I can't believe how many trolls are commenting here! When I was diagnosed I hadn't even heard of schizophrenia and much less conceptualize what it entails. It's really sad that some don't believe in the torment that this mental illness brings upon people
