What do you think about refusing to participate in the political domain? Do you agree or disagree?
@AnterranThought
@AnterranThought 13 днів тому
Depends on what you're trying to do, very anarchist in nature to refuse to participate but something tells me you still pay your taxes so obviously you participate and fund the present system

Yes I think it depends entirely on the context. Some issues like human rights have to be caught politically. For example the plight of the Palestinians in Gaza. We have to stand up for them and tell our politicians they can’t just support Israel because the vested economic interests

It’s interesting that you described yourself as meta-political. Do you wonder ever if your views and convictions in the philosophical and scientific realms commit you by default to certain political positions, even if you refuse like Socrates/Plato to engage in adversarial party politics? And, if so, what do you do with that?

Strongly agree. I see that entering the political domain immediately creates division with today’s political/cultural war (especially with the audience capture phenomenon). It seems like each side is amassing an army. It’s honestly turned me off of JBP’s more recent content.

Alan Moore author of Watch Men "If you wish to develop as a writer, You will have to also develop as a person. I would suggest that you will need to develop a moral standpoint. Which will probably also entail political standpoint. I am not saying that, that should be a left-wing opinion. A right-win opinion or even my own personal preference, an anarchist opinion. The important thing is the understanding. That you should have a platform, a moral or political platform from which you can look at the world and hopefully to understand it, which will need a certain amount of compassion and empathy. Whereby, you can look at someone who has ideas that are completely foreign to your own. And yet, perhaps understand why they have them, what the factors were in their background that caused them to have those ideas. Perhaps to understand that you yourself brought up in slightly different circumstances. May have had exactly those ideas. " --Alan Moore author of Watch Men

The stoics thought that pursuing excellence brought meaning to a person. But excellence in what? Excellence in our humanness. What makes us human? We are social animals. Which in turn, makes us political. Therefore, excellence in the political domain is a huge source of meaning. I tend to agree with this because many definitions of meaning have to do with connecting to something larger than yourself. Connecting to the body politic is one way to do that. I think to refuse to connect is perhaps different than refusing the decisive path. Is being divisive the way to do it? Jordan Peterson couches many of his arguments in very polemical rhetoric, I think, unnecessarily. For example, telling young men that they need to become dangerous, but then saying that what he means by that is becoming articulate writers.
@NicholasDunbar
@NicholasDunbar 13 днів тому
Saying they need to become dangerous isn't precise enough and can easily be confused with endorsing violence. The polemicist traffics in Rorschach tests which one side of the spectrum sees as good and the other as evil through misunderstanding. It's about splitting, not creating collaboration and unity.
@jichaelmorgan3796
@jichaelmorgan3796 13 днів тому
That's not how I interpreted it. Every animal on earth becomes "dangerous" when it is being encroached. Many modern men have learned to suppress this in order to be "good" in the eyes of mom or society. In the process they have lost the ability to express that, which is still in them, in a way that is healthy in modern society. They never learned it! It ends up coming out in toxic misdirected ways. You can also imagine that if someone has lost or never developed a healthy inherent defense mechanism that they will be very insecure as a result.

I always think of Judith when I hear you or Peterson speak. Like the third one you left out from UofT there, even though you used the 'he' pronoun, it made me think of her. Last week on my way home from the eclipse, I transited through Detroit and 'they' had a scene ready to go for me, and it was so obvious they were taking from her likeness. But ffs, when you have a federal agency participating in creating a scene from her likeness and exposing me to it (and utterly ruining what was up until my detainment a beautiful, joyous, spiritual day), I have no idea what to do or how to handle it. It puts me completely sideways, anxious and all kinds of fucked up. Like what the fuck is the plan? Is it just for fun? Marketing? Some other power grab? Make waves and control the current for hot shot motherfuckers with the plan? Makes me hate my fucking life, that that's what I amount to, a live action toy for these motherfuckers, just fubar

Post Modernism and critical theory can act as a solvent for hardened old ideas that do need to be updated, but they end up being weaponized or taking on lives of their own if not used responsibly

I'll never understand this philosophy. "I refuse to talk about politics" Ok genius then explain to me how your contributing to the crisis you admit our society is facing. It's a political problem. The policies by which we govern our society are precisely the problem we are trying to solve. So you might as well say " I refuse to be useful"
@CrowMagnum

It isn't guilt by association, it is considering and taking responsibility for the implications of association and how some less nuanced minds might see it as endorsement. We all have to choose what to give our attention to, and those choices change us and those in our sphere of influence.
@MelFinehout
@MelFinehout 13 днів тому
This is post-hoc justification for political tribalism. Obviously you won’t see it that way, or you wouldn’t have written it. The man was asked to give a course to help people and given free range to do so, decided it would help people. This is good. You just don’t like JP and it all stems from that. To anyone outside your bubble it’s plainly transparent.
