Thank you! I love your artwork and your teaching is excellent! I use Borden & Riley #120 bristol Plate paper 157 pound. It is a very smooth paper and I like it a lot. I use Prismacolor pencils and if I use a solvent... I use gamsol .

Fabriano Artistico Hot pressed, Arches Watercolor Hot Pressed, Hahnemuhle Dessin 150gm/2, are the 3 BEST drawing papers, for either Color pencils or graphite, charcoal etc. Best of the best non toned papers.

For finished, professional level work, whether with graphite or colored pencils, I use Strathmore Bristol Board Smooth or plate finish, depending on whether I use 2-ply or 4-ply. I can't afford this as sketching/practicing paper, and for this I drop way down in price. I almost always use two papers. One is Walmart's Pen Gear Sketchbooks, which I actually like better that Strathmore paper of the same weight. I like it for colored pencils, and for graphite. At 120, 9x12, 100gsm sheets in a top spiral bound sketchbook for under five dollars, it's a steal. I really do think the paper is better, I know it's heavier, and I know there's more of it than what's in the standard Strathmore Sketchbook. The other paper I use is HP Premium Printer paper, either 28 or 32 pound. I do prefer the 32 pound because it also handles ink well. This paper is acid and lignin free, which amazes me, and costs about thirteen dollars for five hundred sheets. I love drawing on it. Friends and family will often buy me sketchbooks, and pencils, of all different brands,, or someone will send me a sketchbook or even Bristol board for review, so I do use other papers, but the Strathmore Bristol Board, the Pen Gear Sketchbook, and the HP Premium Paper are my first choice every time.

Oh! thank you very much for this advice! I have been to Walmart, the ones I have bought is, Koh-I-NOOR sketch 9x12 50 LB 74 GSM and GRUMBACHER mix media paper 98LB 160FSM, the paper you use for matte photos, I use it to print my photos of references, I had never thought that it could be used to draw. It would be great if Walmart here in Puerto Rico brought that Sketchbook. Thanks for that recommendation.😊

@Jessica Matheney Fine Art how does Bristol Board smooth work? I seen some colored pencil artists use that paper, my concern would be the layers of color pencil you could get on that paper. I have used it for graphite with awesome results, but colored pencils working a bit differently and being new to this medium I was just wondering about using that type of paper.

So impressed with your animal drawings. I have one question though: I am a little confused …. Are you suggesting smooth paper (not vellum) for furry animals? Which one is preferred : Bristol vellum (medium) or Bristol smooth for wax based colored pencils? May I ask, what paper did you use on Tiger, Fox and horse? Thank you

I would use a mixed media vellum paper because they are thick enough to handle watercolor and anything else.

Does smooth paper make it easier to blend in the colors? Do you have any recommendations for a colored pencil sharpener? Like for the prisma colored pencils and the caran d’ ache luminance colored pencils? Also would you recommend the caran d’ ache luminance colored pencils for someone who is a beginner at drawing etc.? I know their very expensive just like the copic markers are and I know there’s other dupes that aren’t the best but they aren’t the worst and they aren’t as expensive. Do you know of any good colored pencils that are similar to the caran d’ ache luminance colored pencils but are more affordable? Also, any recommendations for markers that are like the copic markers but aren’t as expensive? Thank you for this video it did help me figure out which paper is which☺️✨also, I’m considering on buying the 40 set of caran d’ ache luminance colored pencils on amazon bc they’re on sale so this is another reason why I’d like to get your opinion on it. I really want to get back into my artwork it’s very therapeutic and it’s something that I enjoy doing. So I saw someone who used these colored pencils and I was amazed at how beautiful their artwork was. I know it’s not just the colored pencils that they used that made their artwork look good, but I do think it made a huge difference. Btw, How long have you been drawing and doing artwork for? Tbh I’m having a hard time converting to Bristol I’m using my luminance and polys on it and it doesn’t seem to hold much layers… then when blending it’s so cakey it’s nearly a nightmare to varnish

For drawing people I would personally use a smooth paper type because there are very minimal details, probably bristol vellum would work best.

I want to share with you a secret here in regards to types of paper, Canson's Desin paper. They are a substitute to Bristol but is'nt as glossy or as thick Bristol is. They have many textures to them. They come in large sheets of 18.5 m × 25.5 m and some are glossy, some are smooth and some are textured. The sticker tags don't tell you if they are hot pressed or cold pressed. I bought these sheets from different art stores and they are all different but has the same upc code. What I said before Jessica is that I'm learning this the hard way. I'm trying to accomplish the goal to paint with my pencils realistically. A young lady from Peru, ArtbyHana on YT colors her drawings layers upon layers without the use of solvent and her drawings are phenomenal. She paints with these pencils . I asked her what paper she uses and she said Canson 200 gm Dessin. What I don't understand is that I study and use the same methods and all of my drawings came out grainy. 😭 I even used the solvent and it came out all smugly. I think it has a lot to do with the way I'm using my color sequnces..😥 Enjoy watching your videos too. 🙂

how cute and pretty * _ * Thinking about what kind of paper is suitable for details it makes me wonder what my Derwent Drawing set could be used for. It's a different topic I know but I though: "maybe not for details but anyway for a typical landscapes it lacks many colours even if you want to represent an autumnal scene"... I'm obsessed with that set. still have to understand if it's useless or can be given value somehow. By the way, I usually use polychromos and still learning to draw with colour pencils: I use fabriano Accademia at the moment, a sketching paper book but that should be mid grain but it seems to me its a little coarse for your level of details - surely my hand is
