Hi Jessica.. I've just started my drawing life and I'm now on my 5th picture and I'm finding I like pastels..as I'm just starting tutorials are the way for me and horses are my thing.. this drawing of the palamino is beautiful and will definitely join your pateron page.. will you be doing more pastel drawings as I'd really like to try and get better with one thing than try turn my hand to different mediums.. and will you be doing more horses..I have Clydesdales and shire's if you could incorporate either of those breeds it would make my year.. thank you for sharing your talents you are amazing.. I'm so excited to try it..I also have a photo of a friend's Clydesdale stallion who is a palamino so that's going to be my goal.. take care and looking forward to hearing from you.. Sue in England x

So basically the best way to simplify values is to go light to dark? I know that might sound silly but I have a hardtime finding mid tons in my drawings.

This paper may work beautifully for Polychromos but for a more waxy pencil like Prismacolor, you need a paper with more tooth. I found that when I use smooth paper, my Prismacolor layers are less saturated the next day.

The FaberCastell Classic are awesome pencils. I’ve had them at home for years and never tried them because they children’s pencils. You can layer with them to the moon and back. After I realised how wonderful they are, I searched for and found them in 100 set as water colour and regular colouring pencils on Amazon Japan or Aliexpress.

I like to draw animals but I like to draw realistic and I like to draw what I see and I just never really think my drawing is good because it don't look real to me because it don't have color and I see artists use color pencils and I just think it's look hard but I think with help from youtube and maybe some music I can at least try what I got to lose?

Fabriano Artistico Hot pressed, Arches Watercolor Hot Pressed, Hahnemuhle Dessin 150gm/2, are the 3 BEST drawing papers, for either Color pencils or graphite, charcoal etc. Best of the best non toned papers.

Why did you come to that conclusion? I respect your statement, but I think your reasons, politely expressed, would be more helpful to the discussion.

Very interesting, maybe I should begin to draw, it looks like an enjoyable hobbie, I'm discovering it now... Your skills are amazing! Do you think it's possible to create hyper realistic drawing completly from the mind? I mean without a photo referense?

@Jessica Matheney Fine Art how does Bristol Board smooth work? I seen some colored pencil artists use that paper, my concern would be the layers of color pencil you could get on that paper. I have used it for graphite with awesome results, but colored pencils working a bit differently and being new to this medium I was just wondering about using that type of paper.

Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. I've been self-teaching myself, but also have a solid art background. Unfortunately, myart school days are long gone...., but getting back to your video, ... I appreciate how you explain different techniques as well as color theory (my weakness)....so I've tried limiting myself to 3 colors, but I definitely need more practice. Thanks again ❤

how cute and pretty * _ * Thinking about what kind of paper is suitable for details it makes me wonder what my Derwent Drawing set could be used for. It's a different topic I know but I though: "maybe not for details but anyway for a typical landscapes it lacks many colours even if you want to represent an autumnal scene"... I'm obsessed with that set. still have to understand if it's useless or can be given value somehow. By the way, I usually use polychromos and still learning to draw with colour pencils: I use fabriano Accademia at the moment, a sketching paper book but that should be mid grain but it seems to me its a little coarse for your level of details - surely my hand is

Any reason you don't use prismacolor? And does the color pencils vary on what you want to color? Say coloring a seashell compared to an animal?

you can buy large rolls of the heavier version of this for way cheaper than buying several of the pads over time. But of course paper rolls are hard to ever get back to perfectly flat.
