CBS Sunday Morning

The progressive rock group Rush, formed decades ago in the Toronto suburbs by guitarist Alex Lifeson, bass player Geddy Lee and drummer Neil Peart, became Canada's most legendary rock band ever, with more than 40 million albums sold. Lifeson and Lee (author of a new memoir, "My Effin' Life") talk with correspondent Jim Axelrod about their particular blend of musicianship, stagecraft and goofiness; how tragedy upended the band with the death of Peart; and what might constitute Rush's next chapter.

@@OneIssueVoter Way to tell everyone you don't know what you are talking about. Geddy is widely regarded as a top 10 bass player all time and has extremely complex and recognizable bass lines, and Alex was ranked top 50 in a list made by a company that has long detested Rush while a plethora of other great guitarists sank low on the list, and likewise has complex riffs and solos. The only way they could be as good as they were was if all 3 members were elite at their artistry, otherwise they would have gotten no where if any single leg fell flat. No 3-piece band could produce so much sound and have so much success if any of them lack. Yes Peart is the most regarded and recognizable member, but nothing about the other two members is "generic" lmao

A very touching interview. RUSH never went through the calamity of doing hardcore drugs and band members going off to rehab or commit suicide. The best, they never split up or sued each other. They were a family that played together and stayed together. The road they have traveled on to superstardom had to be difficult in the beginning. Their music was certainly different and fresh. They stayed true to themselves and their art. RIP Neil Peart

Rush's been my absolute passion and inspiration for decades. Neil was the reason I started learning the drums. My dad went to Rush in RIo in 2002 and grabbed the DVD a couple of months later. Six-year-old me would watch it over and over again, sitted on the floor, pillows in front of me and wooden spoons in my hands, banging to Earthshine and memorizing every detail of Neil's solo. Twenty years later, still rocking to it, appreaciating Neil's fantastic lyrics, Geddy's resounding bass and Alex's distinct tunes. I'm a drummer to this day and will be a fan until the day I die.

That’s such a cool story. I’d like to share two of mine. I started college in 1985 and I wrote Stewart Copeland, Phil Collins, and Neil Peart letters, asking for advice on how to make it in the music business since my dad forced me to go to college, but I wanted to go to Los Angeles and play in bands. Of the three Neil was the only one who wrote me back. It was a handwritten postcard And it was filled with sincere advice. Still can’t believe he wrote me back. My second story is seeing Rush on their 40th anniversary in Vegas with my then 72-year-old dad. We had 10th row tickets at the MGM and it was absolutely amazing.

If Rush doesn't reunite it's not the end of the world. They have a cemented legacy and a catalog of music that will stand the test of time. It's worked out for Led Zeppelin when they lost John Bonham. They never reunited to make new music ever again and 43 years later, they're still celebrated.

I have to be honest when I was a "young metal head" :) hard to believe 30+ yrs ago I never got the Rush thing. I liked a few songs but it just never clicked. Fast forward, I took the time to dive into their music. Rush is an amazing "Band" and band in the true since of the word. No ego's between members an actual musical brotherhood. With three extremely talented individuals. Being a avid motorcyclist and bicyclist I read Neil's book and it was very well written and an inspiration in over coming heartache. RUSH deserves every bit of their success and should have been inducted in the Hall of Fame much earlier than they were.

CBS could have at least recognized John Rutsey. He was in the band 6 years. To put that in perspective, that is only 4 years less than The Beatles were together. They present this as if Rush formed after holding drummer auditions and finding Peart. That aside, it's not everyday that you see a two guys that have been together for over 50 years that have been put through the rigors of one of the toughest industries and still have so much love and respect for each other. It shows the corrosiveness of taking yourself too seriously and the importance of humility and keeping yourself grounded. I would love to hang out with them, such wonderful human beings! We are all so lucky to have had front row seats to watch the career of thee greatest progressive rock trio ever formed. Whether or not Peart were still alive, he was done. He was walking away, retiring from music. As a fan, I am 100% on board with what Geddy and Alex decide to do moving forward. As much as I love and respect Peart, there was Rush before he joined the band, there can be life after. There are hundreds of thousands of people who have lost a beloved spouse and remarry. As grief settles, they come to one realization. We are given one trip on this ride. They can spend the rest of their trip in sorrow, or they can continue to honor that persons memory, pick up the pieces and move forward. Doing so does not mean that you no longer love or care about that person. Rush's lyrics were Pearts thoughts, words and life experiences. No better way to honor his legacy than to continue singing those words.

But I understood this gut wrenching diagnosis. My grandpa, a watchmaker, extraordinaire, fled from Nicaragua with my grandmother in the 40s from massive corrupt government to S.F. In 1975 as a 16 year old Canadian kid, I took my younger brother to see RUSH & Nazareth in concert at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver BC, Canada. Lucky for us we got see each of those two bands play live numerous times thereafter. Each RUSH concert was a whole new experience ; as they always changed things up and never left us disappointed. In 2002, I read "Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road" by Neil Peart and that book had a profound impact on me. He was a not only a great drummer, author and lyricist, but a fine man as well. Alex and Geddy have always impressed me, not only with their great music ,but also their enduring friendship as "goofy" pals (so were my brother & I). I am looking forward to reading "My Effin' Life" by Geddy Lee and hopeful, that someday I will see them play live again( as RUSH or as themselves). When I return home to Canada next year , I will be sure to visit Henderson's Brewery and enjoy a nice cold RUSH! Cheers!🎵

@!GoodBoyChevy Neil's book "Ghost Rider: Travels On The Healing Road" had a huge impact on me as well. Neil also inspired me to start journaling after reading that book. I was so happy to see them tour again & took my children to their first concert in 2002 which was Rush. I have seen them live 16 times on 14 different tours since 1982 when I was 16 which was the first time I had seen them play live. They have never disappointed me either & as a guitarist/musician they have always influenced me to become better & to always keep learning & pushing myself to play things that are difficult and even out of my range at first, until I spend a lot of time practicing. Their catalog of music is still inspiring to this day & I can always learn something new just by re-visiting an old song of theirs or learning an older song by them I wasn't good enough to play years ago but have advanced enough now to do so. Not only did Neil's book "Ghost Rider" influence me, all his books have as I have read every book he has ever written & when he had his web site up & running I use to read his book reviews at "Bubba's Book Club" and have discovered some amazing authors & excellent books by checking out some of the ones he reviewed there. The site was still up the last time I checked with plenty of his older reviews still available to read. Thanks for mentioning his book "Ghost Rider" I always felt it never got the attention it deserved.

I first saw Rush back in 1975 when they were the opening band for Blue Oyster Cult. Had never heard their music before that concert. The day after the concert, I went to my local record store and bought every album they had out at the time. They have been my favorite band of all time ever since.

I saw that tour, and the one the next year, too, again opening for BÖC. They held their own, with the Cult, quite the feat. I mean, they didn’t get booed off the stage, like just about everyone else.

Very rare for BÖC to open for anyone. That says a lot about Rush. A lot of good things. I saw BÖC open for Black Sabbath in 1980, although they co-headlined. I didn’t stick around for the Sabs. Seen everyone open for BÖC, 156 shows in 50 years. Never disappointed.

I’ll never forget when a friend of mine came over in 1977 with a record he had stolen from his older brother and said “You have GOT to hear this!”…IT was “2112” and I was blown away, it just couldn’t be that three guys were playing this incredible music! I was instantly hooked and have been a fan ever since. Like most, I was disappointed when they decided to hang it up, but appreciative of all of the years of amazing music. I was devastated when Neil passed away, such a loss for all who appreciate the epitome of musicianship, and understood when it was initially said Rush will never be again, however, Geddy and Alex are creative artists, and you just don’t turn that off, it is always in them and it had to have an outlet. If they were to decide to make new music and tour with one of the few premier drummers that could pull it off, I would be more than happy for them and look forward to hearing what they came up with.

Once I found Rush in about 1973, I was in love! I saw them perform in Kansas City, Kansas at Memorial Hall and at Kemper Arena, in KCMO several times over the years. Yes, there were lots of guys there, but lots of girls, too. On stage, their music was loud and clear, the audience singing along with many songs. The lights would go out and the Bics lit up the place, in every direction, thousands! Rush would be wearing blousy light-colored shirts, tight pants, and boots. Geddy's hair looked like mine, and most of my female friends, too. Never a dull concert! Still play Tom Sawyer regularly on You Tube. Miss those who are gone. Wonderful story.

That was one of the best short interviews of Rush that I've seen in a very long time. Oh, and Alex is the original co-founders of the band. Geddy came in a bit after. John Rutsey was the original drummer from 1968 - 1974. Neil then joined and pretty much became the main lyrics, while Alex and Geddy wrote the music. Rest in peace #johnrutsey and #neilpeart.

Saw them three time in the 90s - I’m a lightweight next to their most hardcore fans of course but each time they put on the most astonishing show. Just when you think they couldn’t do something new onstage, they did! First time was 1991, opening night of the RtBs tour in Hamilton Ont and they played like they were at least halfway thru the tour. I ran into my ex-girlfriend a short time later - she was an even bigger fan of theirs than I was and she was green with envy!

Cannot fully describe what this band has meant to me for decades and how much I love these guys. Prodigies, without a doubt - arguably the greatest 3-man band in history. Trailblazers and master craftsmen with a chemistry worthy of a Nobel prize. I was fortunate to see them live once - many years ago at Lakers Stadium in LA. Unfortunate that it was only once. When I heard of Neil's death I cried like I had lost a part of my soul, no matter that I am a 55 year old married man with two daughters. To hear now that if I ever visit Canada I might see Geddy and Alex in this pub, purchase some Rush beer and mustard - fills me with joy. To hear that there is a chance they will find a drummer and tour again fills me with a mix of hope, apprehension, joy and sadness. I don't envy the drummer who has to step into those impossible shoes but I am sure he/she will be treated with respect and gratitude by most Rush fans.

Getting older is tough. I have been a RUSH fan since 1987's "Hold Your Fire." I was 18 and that was my first time seeing them live. I went to Geddy's solo album signing in 2000 and his "Big Beautiful Book of Bass" signing in 2018, both in NJ. If they do decide to do some more work together I recommend Gavin Harrison as a drummer. When Neil was alive he thought highly of him. I think he can fill those big shoes.

Getty... Bro... What you have added to my life from a high school student in the late 70's to now is simply priceless. I started in third grade playing drums. Once I hooked into Rush, I picked up the bass and never put it down. Although my career was an engineer, my passion has always been music and I've never stopped playing. I'm retired now and I've been playing for mega churches in the area for over 15 years now. You have been such an inspiration and mentor to me all these years. My UKposts channel has over 750 songs now... I bet there are many aspiring teenage musicians out there that you can help set on this same life-long journey. It's the gift that know no age limit. We all miss Neal. In my mind, the greatest drummer that ever lived. A great writer too. I've read and loved all his books. I look forward to meeting him in heaven, but for now, what a fitting tribute to carry on his legacy. No matter who plays his part, we will be thinking of "the professor." All of the Rush heads out there are looking for you to come back ... we won't forget original Rush, but we all are holding out hope you, Alex and the next luckiest drummer in the world will be back on stage.
