If only we took a piece of the $14 trillion in subsidies (not counting military expenditures) the fossil fuel industry STILL gets every year and gave it to a number of them, we could easily pull this off.

However of those many don't scale, aren't very efficient, and are just cost prohibitive... but that isn't to say some (all?) shouldn't be undertaken. Collectively we gained a lot of energy releasing these emissions and it will therefore require relatively equal amounts of energy to get them all back. Just the fact you'd have to filter through a million parts to capture the mere 421 you're after should make anyone pause. Plus you have to consider how much carbon the oceans are holding and so as you remove it from the atmosphere the oceans will replace whatever we capture. Even if many carbon capture projects were implemented it's gonna be a massive battle and far from easy.

The population of this planet has DOUBLED in the last 50 years, from just over 4 billion to over 8 billion people. If you have some other way to turn inedible grass into edible protein (as the meat and diary industry does) - then I'd love to hear about it.

I appreciate your post. Look at the challenge though. The actual work that is performed by fossil fuel must be replaced, each BTU of it. If humans got around on little motorbikes and grew food in home gardens, and if farmers slowly went about their business the way they did 100 years ago,if we sailed ships again around the world versus burning diesel, and if people moved back to colder places from these hot places requiring air conditioning...and if travel slowed down we could get it done. The problem is 1) our habits are energy intensive 2) we want too much speed 3) people have gotten lazy We have been sold machinery for ease and speed and it will probably be impossible to reverse these trends mainly because capitalism requires competition and the one who slows down cannot compete.

CO2 is in no way a horrible gas, it is the foundation of all life on the planet except chemotroph bacteria living in places where there is no oxygen. There is only 0,04% CO2 in the atmosphere and if we should go below 0,02% plants would suffocate and we would all die (except for the for bacteria I mentioned before). Our planet has never in hundreds of millions of years been this low except for the previous 100 years and we should consider ourselves lucky that it has reversed a little. That is also why our planet is getting greener and the deserts are shrinking, because plants need less water when CO2 levels get higher.

All the rest of MENA is pathetically & disgustingly but effectively resisting renewables, obviously because they all survive as autocracies by selling oil domestically & abroad. (The resource curse)... Except for Morocco, which is almost 40% RE, twice the US despite Morocco’s poverty. Its Noor series of projects (Arabic for light) have made it a world leader in combining PV & dispatchable, 24/7/365 CSP. (also 20% hydro). The current problem with wind and solar (pardon my pun) is transmission. No one wants to invest in new transmission lines until renewable sites are approved and work has begun. Just look at where most new wind power installations are being proposed. Offshore, so only nearby coastal “neighbors” to object to the loss of view, and almost all are near existing or retired fossil fuel generation facilities. That’s because those existing facilities already have high power connectivity to the grid. So only a line or two need to be run from the wind farm to shore to achieve a grid connection. But beach communities are fighting even that minor change.

Using electric heat pumps, induction cookers, EVs, etc.-vastly more efficient end uses with a tiny fraction of a percent of leaks & losses that the gas system has, & renewable energy which is already cheaper & is dropping fast in price, the answer will be much clearer, at least to sane people. (IF you’re telling the truth, gas is only cheaper because of pricing policies. But many places in Colorado have opted for renewable electricity to save both money & civilization.)

ICVs, eg, waste 94-96% of the energy in oil, well to wheel, while EVs are about 40-60% efficient panel & turbine to wheel, inclusive. Same with heat pumps vs. AC + radiative heater, induction cooking, etc. Then there’s transporting fuels: 40% of global shipping; probably half of rail, enormous metal & energy expended on pipelines. (the first recyclable, the second not so much). All eliminated by renewable energy. [1] And all the energy, money, labor, expertise wasted on fuel subsidies ($7 trillion/yr) & making up for or living (& dying) with the enormous externalities ($6 trillion/yr though that leaves out a lot) caused by fuels but not renewables: gone. In all, the US wastes as much as 85% of the energy it uses & that’s not even counting what the rich waste on trivial indulgences & defensive oppression. With greater equality we could eliminate as much as 95% of the energy we use. But renewablizing doesn’t count on that. Other savings are pointed out by Amory Lovins’ RMI, Drawdown & others. Efficient light bulbs, straightening pipes, insulation, building better buildings from now on [2] Wind, solar, efficiency, & wiser lives are the cheapest energy sources of all. Those investments make lots of money but because of decades of delay by the insane right wing, it can’t happen fast enough that way to prevent catastrophic ecological & civilizational collapse. It has to be massive, determined, immediate emergency action by a progressive government with enormously higher taxes on the rich (which has to happen anyway to prevent fascism). IOW, a radical, comprehensive Green New Deal. Given the lunatic intransigence of the far right ruling the US & their opposition to all climate & ecological solutions, that’s unlikely without a peaceful revolution (at least on our side; it’s already been violent on the side of the rich & the right). Any complaints about the scale of the changes needed should be sent to the extreme right wing.
