It's that time of year again when the Aussie magpies are nesting, or mating, or just being nasty to anything within a few hundred meters of their nests. They'll swoop without provocation targeting cyclists, pedestrians, even other animals if they think they're a threat. There's a few theories about how to avoid being swooped from using goggly eyes or zip ties on your helmet to offering them mince meat. Thankfully the star of this show isn't making head contact just yet!
GPLama Magpie Photos: bit.ly/3juC05y
Helmet Mount: I'm using a basic GoPro clip in mount on the Livall BH60SE Smart Helmet that I've zip tied on very securely. Not something I want to do on my newer helmets at this point. Here's the kit I used to build the mount: amzn.to/36uGZ2C
Helmet Camera: GoPro HERO 9 amzn.to/3jreVRp
Six Tips for Dealing with Swooping Magpies:
1 - If you're in a group, don't ride at the back. Let someone else take the hit! :)
2 - Cover your ears - They love a good ear scratch.
3 - Cover your neck - Another scratch zone.
4 - Sunglasses - Although they almost always attack from behind. Protect them anyway.
6 - Make eye contact - They won't swoop or come too close if you're looking at them.
6 - Raise a hand - That's usually all it'll take to keep them off your back, literally.

I’ve read that if male magpies (the ones swooping) don’t pull their weight and protect their young, wifey magpie ditches him! This explains the motivation and persistence in some that I’ve been swooped by. Least he didn’t get stuck on your jersey! 🙋🏽‍♀️😎

On a Bikepacking trip a couple of years ago I had 30 plus attacks, foam flying out of the helmet. It kinda ruined the trip. But after a while I learnt to listen for the Attack cry that they use before planning their attack run. They would start a large flanking flight path when they were barely a dot in the distance. That's why they would appear from no where. By the end of the trip you could tell what trees were most likely to have them and again listen for that attack squark!! This was in open farm land in mid north SA. Great Vid!!

I learned when to expect them on BVRT but it didn’t change anything. If I stated one down another would attack me from behind. Had 17 different Maggie’s attack and four butcher birds. Terrifying.

I grew up with Australian magpies in New Zealand. We out in the mountains so did not notice the swooping behavior but they did become a pest in spring when they would swoop in and peck out the lambs’ eyes. Apparently, magpies are huge fans of eyeballs.

It felt like she was repeatedly body slamming against my face and then pecking furiously at my neck. But looking at your footage i'm wondering if it was her claws...
