The M-Series MacBooks never need to be shutdown really unless you’re packing longer term. And they wake instantly when you open the lid.. pretty cool coming from windows to that.

i agree. I never turn my iMac 2015 off ever and its been treating me good. Only time it powers off its when we have blackout for 5 min and power goes out in the area. haha. Makes sense that it does maintenance while its on. I will keep my Macbooks on too if i am using them day to day. Not monthly or quarter of the year.

You still don’t have any real data to support this. There is no hard evidence that shutting down your Mac causes any harm to the components. This has been debated since the pc and max first came out.

Windows messes up a lot of things though. Linux is as stable as always.

The advice with Windows has always been to shut down. First because Windows is notoriously bad at memory management and flushing the RAM regularly saves issues. Secondly, in a corporate environment, managed software updates only occur when the PC is restarted.

All the same downsides apply to rebooting Windows. But. Windows can’t really function well if left on for more than a day or two. Windows 10 is a bit better, it seems fine for 2 or 3 days. So the tradeoffs are different.

The daily reboot is from the time of Windows XP. I use Windows 10 for weeks without a reboot, only sleep and no problems of any kind...

Weird, I sometimes run my Windows desktop for months without shutting down. My work laptop with windows I restart every 5 to 6 weeks because I am forced to by updates.

I shut down my windows as well but only because its in my bedroom and the fans are way too loud. but with and m1 macbook air this isnt a problem at all since it has no fans

I try to reduce the processor load as much as possible when I put the comp to sleep overnight. Closing apps definitely achieves that. If you have too many apps and windows open the fan will continue to spin even when the comp is asleep - definitely not a good outcome for computer longevity or your electricity bill.

@@sirrathersplendid4825 i practice only leaving few apps opened (mail/messages/finder) before putting my MBA to sleep. So far I don’t see any significant impact on battery drain. Might be a different story if I leave every app opened then put it to sleep, but my conscience won’t allow me. 😅

Kyle B yes, i mean sometimes the battery would just die when i was at college, but when i was at home i almost never turn it off, just when i needed to restart for some app. Also the battery has like 1800 cycles but doesn’t seem damage at all.

I have a MacBook Pro from 2012 used every weeks days to work on photoshop, only professional use. Shutting down everyday. Still working perfectly. Didn’t know that it should do anything despite saving electricity. I just order the new M1 MacBook because of software compatibility issues. (Not received yet) . That said. It doesn’t change what’s explained on that UKposts video or that it isn’t relevant. But just to give an other fact/perspective on the matter.

Anabelle DM great to know, overall that laptop was truly well build i guess, but I’ve seen cases where some have got battery problems, not fully charging or even having a battery bump after a few years, so I thought maybe I didn’t go through that because I rarely turn it off or drain the full battery.

Mac mini must be shut down as it doesn't have a power reserve so voltage variations from the grid can damage the hardware as with any Instant-on device.

Is it perhaps shuffling around data to reduce wear on a overused sectors? SSDs are designed to do that. Didn’t know it happened in sleep mode though.

When I've finished using my M2 MacBook Air, I plug in the charger, when light is green, I unplug then go to bed. I have the fast charger, and so far when I go back on the Mac next evening, it's fully charged. So, far in sleep mode, I'm not loosing battery life. When I shut down the laptop, messed up UKposts, with blank boxes with no text. Had to do a restart on my Mac. I guess for me, I don't used it as long as you do, to have the battery completely drain.

It's the same as with all lithium-ion battery powered devices. Charges lower than 20% and higher than 80% (as a rule of thumb) cause chemical reactions that cannot be undone in the battery, causing a lower lifetime. Therefore, a lot of devices (such as my HP laptop) have a setting to make charging stop at 80% so you can leave it on the charger while working. That is ultimately the perfect option because it also eliminates the charging/discharging between 20 and 80 percent, although this causes less degradation than the aforementioned chemical reactions. I think there might be software available for Macs that also makes charging stop around 80%. I'm quite surprised that Apple doesn't include that option natively.

@@Leinsterbaby The battery health functionalities introduced in macOS 10.15 try to learn how you use your device. If you use it for long times without charging and briefly charge it in between, it will quick charge the battery to make sure you won't run out of power. If you leave it plugged in most of the time, it will charge the battery slowly, which reduces wear compared to quick charging. Maybe it will reduce the maximum charge if it learns that you never need it for long without plugging it in, but I'm not sure.

Your battery wears out every time it expands (charging on AC) and contracts (discharging unplugged). Every lithium ion battery has a finite life span measured in charge cycles. According to Apple, a charge cycle is equal to 100 percent of the battery capacity being discharged. This definition doesn't just mean when the battery reach from 100 percent to 0 percent; it can start from any percentage. For example your battery can start at 75 percent and reach 0 then charged back to 100 percent and 25 percent of that 100 can be counted towards the a full charge cycle. Every charge cycle will slowly wear down the battery. That being said from my personal and professional IT experience with dealing with many laptops and phones, the best practice to minimize the frequency of the number of times your laptop plugs into the wall. The wear of your battery is caused during expansion and contraction. When your laptop is near 100 percent and plugged into the wall, it will behave like a traditional computer and will draw current straight from the AC adapter. This good for battery since there will be little strain on your battery when your laptop is in use. The worst situation is when your battery is low and charging while your CPU is under high load. Your laptop needs push a high amount of current to your CPU which cause your laptop be get hot. Some of that heat from your CPU will affect your battery which also drawing current and getting hot. Heat is really bad for the lifespan of your battery. According to your Apple, fast charging happen between 0-80 percent then slow charging happens at 81-100 percent. I would recommend if you are doing something CPU intensive like encoding video then do it during the slow charging phase (80-100 percent). www.apple.com/batteries/why-lithium-ion/

There is another factor - dirty air. In an ideal world, if your environment is perfectly clean then it’s fine but keeping your Mac running with dirty air isn’t too good. Also when it’s more humid than normal etc. this is theoretical, and I’d like to be corrected if I’ve got it wrong.

@@HominisLupis new M1 Air doesn't have any physical fans bro. It doesn't push out the heat from processes neither suck in any fresh air. Heat of M1 processor passes through the metal conduction and it works perfectly fine. Like how it works in an iPad.

I do, my mac has terrible problems with the battery and temperature. It's a 2018 MBP. When I put it to sleep, it never sleeps and keep running things in the background and getting warm, sometimes it turns on during the night and it wakes me up. Sometimes I hard turn it off due the rage for being wake up by the bright screen.

@@zacsoldaat754 Thanks for your advice, but my original comment was made 9 months ago I had since purchased a reconditioned Mac Mini with OS10.14 Mohave which I was told would be the newest version of X that could run my old Adobe software. To my blessed surprise, the retailer that supplied my reconditioned MM also loaded every Adobe CS6 graphics application available for print & web. Don't know if they did that or if the previous owner of the Mini left everything he had on it when the retailer acquired the machine. I still have my original software discs for CS3 but Adobe was never going to give me access codes for old software they no longer support. I'm retired so I no longer need the latest and greatest. I'm fine with these versions.

HDD in any laptop should be shut down. Otherwise pick up a cheap ssd for that thang.

I just got the new MacBook Pro with m2. You're saying that I shouldn't plug it in to charge while it's in sleep mode? and that would mean only charging it while in use, or after it's completely shutdown? If so, it would need to be shutdown more often than every few weeks as stated in the video. I am completely new to MacBooks and everything I thought I knew about computers in general has gone out the window in the last 12 hours lol.

@@cynamon_ so the basic rules I go by is to try and make sure I only charge it while I’m actively using it. This is supposed to be the best charging method, according to videos and sources like these. I don’t really shutdown my MacBook every day, unless I know I’m not going to be using it for a couple of days or I’m completely finished with whatever programs I have running for the time being. I have noticed that it will automatically restart while in sleep mode sometimes, probably after it’s just installed an update so I don’t ever keep it on the charger while it’s on sleep mode (that’s apparently where problems can happen.) It hasn’t been as complicated as it probably sounds. If the battery is below 25%, I’ll charge while I’m using it until it’s between 50-75% charged. If I’m going to pick up where I left off tomorrow with the same work and programs I have running today, I’ll just leave it in sleep mode. If I won’t be using it for a day or two I’ll just shutdown. I shutdown probably once a week, for the weekends. So far, it’s running just as smoothly as day 1 and I feel pretty confident that I’m caring for it to the best of my ability. I’m no expert tho, so this is all going by what I’ve researched and what seems to keep it running smoothly.

I for many times would use my mbp m1 out from sleeve on sleep mode! I’m surprised the battery hadn’t drained. And yes, no heat generated.

Problem with my old MacBook was that if you had too much stuff open when you put it to sleep the fan might stay on. And in extreme cases (or possibly as a result if a software fault) the HD would continue spinning. Occasionally when I made sudden turns I could actually hear and feel the angular momentum of the spinning HD resisting the turn. Clearly not a clever thing to do!

Inside anything shut it down. It can still generate heat believe it or not I figured this out with a new m1 mbp. While taking it to work in my backpack. Anyone saying it doesn't make heat hasn't seen how hot I have had it get in just my backpack

Best to plug it in overnight. Then it’s fully charged when you need to make an unexpected trip. Used to be that the battery was only good for a set number of ‘cycles’ so allowing it to deplete was wearing it unnecessarily. Don’t know how the newer batteries work, though - they may be different. If the battery dies while in sleep mode you may lose any unsaved data, though I believe newer OSs have auto-save features that should prevent that.

@@sirrathersplendid4825 the comment is old, but: The battery's want to be used. Used as in decharged(used) and charged. If you want your devices to live as long as possible, you'll use them fairly regularly and charge them from ~10-90%. Electric battery's also have that limit. You can't fully charge their battery and you can't fully drain them, even if it's shown as full or empty. That prolongues their life.
