Old Britannia

Between 1899 and 1900, Wilhelm II, Ruler of the German Empire, faced a choice. As Britain engaged in the Boer War, France and Russia looked to take advantage. Germany could very well decide whether they would be able to. The Kaiser had a long held and very public sympathy for the Boers, yet remarkably, in the first year of the war, it was down to his influence alone that a continental league against Britain failed to take shape. This video aims to be a short documentary charting the diplomatic proceedings of this.

The video I am mainly working on at the moment is the final part of 'The Other Great Game', but I have a few smaller scripts like this I have completed that I will hopefully be able to add to the channel in the meantime. Given Dutch military capacity (capable warriors!) and war time performance (lose war after war to UK) all I can conclude is: a small ambitious hard working country with global ambitions Chose to lose the wars it would lose inevitably yet win the peace. Dutch e.g. are in fact among the elite in the USA. I presume that is true in S.A. as well.
@kloon9699
@kloon9699 6 місяців тому
The Netherlands was perhaps the most sympathetic to the Boers. However, on its own, it couldn't do much against the British Empire. It also held a position of neutrality in world affairs. Queen Wilhelmina put a lot of effort into supporting the Boers. She wrote Queen Victoria to help prevent the war, but she replied that an outbreak of hostilities would be the fault of the Boers. When the war started, she tried to rally the other Great Powers to pressure Britain into ceasing the war. She wrote Kaiser Wilhelm with the request, "das schlimmste von den Buren abzuwenden durch eine Intervention bei England mit den andern Mächten". Wilhelm, however, also refused. The Russian Empire preemptively sent a letter to Queen Wilhelmina saying that they wouldn't intervene, so no great power would help the Netherlands. The only thing we could do was send a warship to pick up President Kruger and bring him to safety. This war also caused widespread Anglophobia in the Netherlands until World War II.

Also, I feel like you're kinda assuming that Dutch people actually thought they could get back to the influence they had in the 1600s. Like no, Dutch people didn't just go through a massive timeskip from 1700 to 1900 just cause that's the next date something relevant happened. Their 100-year stagnation, the Napoleonic era, and Belgian independence all happened in between those dates, and Dutch culture and foreign policy had completely changed

One of the main reasons for the Boer war that remains unexplored was the construction of the Suez canal. This would have had a major negative impact on everyone in South Africa which until then had enjoyed the fruits of shipping routes between West and East. At that point the Boers were unable to sustain a proper currency and instead used British stamps for money.

How different to the WW1 aims video descriptions of peoples appealing to US ideas of self determination. It did touch on it with the press stirring up national sentiment. Interesting that this is around the time when Yellow Press had a role in US v Spain in Cuba. I am now wondering if each country had its Citizen Kane to match? Lastly, the idea Britain only wanted to uphold Belgian neutrality in 1914 seems less and the idea of it seeking gains seems enhanced. Could King George have verbally "banged his cousins heads together" to stop things or was his gran the last with such authority? Very interesting as always.

Queen Victoria was grandmother to the whole of the world and the Great Nations could always find other common interests, such as disturbances in their development projects with Imperial China. Acts of barbarism that offended civilized society would be perpetrated by various uncivilized peoples and advanced civilizations of the time felt it their duty to punish such actions and aid peoples the education for becoming civilized; Of course, this included Christian Missionaries spreading the word and these fellas were common targets of torture-death squads over the centuries on the mainland in the East and upon the islands of the East. In 1900, the Imperial Chinese once again violated oaths and treaties in a campaign of genocide against non-Chinese and Chinese Christians and their properties (lands ceded from prior wars lost they had signed and agreed as peace terms). It is way meatier of course, including the USA no longer needing migrant labor and so repatriating a great deal of Chinese peasants from the States back over to Mainland China (they were valuable day laborers for completion of the US transcontinental railroad). So, they got stomped again and had their Imperial Palace razed to the ground in response to crimes against humanity. And, while one power built the scientific marvel of the Panama Canal, another was experiencing the collapse of Empire - At one time in history, a rival for the strongest power on Earth after consolidation under Ghengis Khan's Mongol Empire Just a footnote in the grand scheme of things, but worth noting nonetheless for Eight-Nation involvement during the 'Boxer Rebellion' of 1899-1901.

And here we see the basic problem for the Kaiserreich; can't ally with Britain, but can't restore the alliance with Russia either. This would have fatal consequences just 15 years later.

Removing the Kaiser led to Hitler, it was asking too much of Germany. Had they imposed a democracy and monarchy like their own, public opinion would have opposed unilateral German rearmament - he would never have been trusted with it, but the German republic rearming triggered no hostility at all. As unpopular as he was in 1918, removing him was a mistake, the public got too much of what it wanted. He was a cause of the war, but he could have been used to ensure peaceful evolution of the new Europe since he had become symbolic of the militarism that Europe feared. Nothing could have been worse than extremist revolutionary Germany, and it only offended two people, Neville Chamberlain and Winston Churchill, until Hitler began showing the nature of his diplomacy.

If the current laws of succession were in place at the time of Queen Victoria’s passing, the British crown would have gone to her eldest child, the Princess Royal Victoria. As she only survived her mother by less than a year, that would have meant the next king of England and the British Empire would have gone to her eldest child …Wilhelm! I’m pretty sure Wilhelm wouldn’t have allowed the British Empire to form an alliance against his German Empire and that both France and Russia wouldn’t have dreamed of going to war against such an alliance. Oh well, at least Europe is now being conquered peacefully by gangs of thieves and rapists.
@theotherohlourdespadua1131
@theotherohlourdespadua1131 5 місяців тому
Not gonna happen. Parliament would nip that at the bud (since they have the exclusive power to choose a monarch which they used to elect William of Orange to the British throne) and considering that is the same situation with Hannover when their ruler died. By Hannover's succession laws, Queen Victoria would have been the next ruler of that place but given how much Hannover hates British liberalism, they wouldn't let her be their monarch despite being related to the last one by blood...

@@theotherohlourdespadua1131 You’re mistaking English animosity to the Hohenzollerns during and after the Great War with how they felt about them before the war. In 1901, before the Anglo German naval race, the Princess Royal Victoria was still very popular in Britain. After her death, as Queen Victoria II, Parliament might very well have been in a sympathetic mood to Wilhelm. Oddly enough, there was a move by some in the British establishment to make King Edward VIII the Duke of Hannover after the Second World War when there were some seeking to restore the monarchy in Germany. Too many problems to sort out to make that a reality, but some did at least try.

Even if the Germans, Russians and French tried to impose a peace, they could have done nothing to make it a reality. To fight alongside, or to supply the Boers, they would have needed to control the seas. At this point in time the Royal Navy would have had no issues with dealing with all three simultaneously, and if it wasn't able to you can guarantee this theoretical alliance would indeed have taken place. Germany didn't save Britain- Britain's navy did.

I’m a bit mixed on Kaiser Wilhelm on this. On one hand he made the right call. Forming a continental system against Britain would’ve been a disaster for Germany. Britain would’ve given concessions to Russia and France, leaving Germany with nothing but strained relations with London. On the other hand he acted like a complete man-child to Queen Victoria, Edward, and Salisbury. Got the public against him and Anglo-German relations ended up soured eventually anyway. But hey at least he got an island out of it.
