Several major automakers are making big bets on electric vehicles. A few vehicles have been released so far, but sales indicate any one of them has failed to make a significant dent in Tesla’s share of the EV market. So, who are they? And how much of a chance do they have?

Tesla also doesn’t sell through 3rd party dealerships, you buy directly from Tesla when someone purchases one.

@@naughtyprofessor100 Doesn't really matter. Some people will always have a different opinion. Tesla wanted majority support. In general, you can't buy ICE vehicles online. But you can buy EVs, both online and offline. And EVs buyers seem to prefer the online version. In general, EV buyers are generally forward thinking and cost-cutting people. And it seems a bit cool, if you can buy a car from your home, rather than walking around several shop. Not to mention, the decrease in cost due to this model. So, it seems EVs will be bought online in the future. ICE vehicle buyers don't care about cost and hence they won't mind going to the dealership, as they will anyways have spend much higher in maintenance and fuel

Tesla sell less than a little automaker like Volvo. What we are talking about? For the Other automaker ev is only one propulsion systems very hiped but unprofitable. Every one knows that for the next years ice will be prominent. And personally consider Tesla more risky of bankrupt then the others becouse the others has less debt and more profits. Software plays a smaller role in people purchasing Tesla's. It is a number of things, like huge long lasting batteries, which no other OEM comes close to offering Tesla's ranges. Plus Tesla uses a lot of aluminum in their cars, which doesn't rust like steel. I believe it's one of the reasons for their long warranties.

Both Software and hardware are what give Tesla the edge, an article came out yesterday(I think), multiple legacy auto makers did a teardown of the Model 3 and after looking at everything from hardware to software, they came to thw conclusion that they cant compete right now. Exactly. If GM and Ford had done what they are doing now 5 years ago, they would be right in the muix with Tesla. GM actually had a great product with the Volt (I know as I have a 2012 model) the software was cutting edge, the interior was posh, you had a back-up (gas engine) if the Battery ran out. And then they failed keep advancing the technology, they chinced out on the next model to come out (2016 version was not a better vehicle) and then the did away with the Volt and created the Bolt, all electric, felt like a cheap model, like a Prius or Kia electric vehicle that I wouldn't be caught dead owning. When you spend $40k on a vehicle you expect every luxury and advanced technology available. GM didn't feel that way about the Bolt and that's why almost no-one buys a Bolt... why get a cheap EV when for the same price you can buy a Tesla?

@@1231legomaniac Absolutely. Testing and compiling data is key to future developments and that's great for competition sake but Tesla will have a fight on its hands when major automakers really turn their full attention to EV's. The good news for Tesla is that it has been able to distinguish itself as a brand and that will be valuable when the EV market becomes truly competitive and its current advantages fade as a result.

I guess with over 90% profitable market penetration in some Asian countries Toyota knows the WW market and how to stay highly profitable: on a 70 million per year car market, EV represent a small volume with at best no profits potential mid term, since Renault, quite successfull with Zoe has been unprofitable for the first time in 20 years due to this EV volume.

Non-Tesla car makers generally: 1. Ask double the price, give half the range! 2. Have no 'over-the-air' updates 3. Have very few high speed charging stations 4. Are about 3 to 5 years behind on autonomous driving 5. Have a tiny fan base, so have huge advertising costs 6. Have big shortages in selling old fashioned batteries: they do not own a battery factory like Tesla nor invest in battery innovation like Tesla 7. Think they are a hardware selling company with some software elements in it... 8. Should think they are a software company with some hardware elements in it.......(a car is simply stated: a phone on wheels) As the CEO of VW mr. Herbert Diess said in an interview about Tesla: ' A big storm is coming...... ' Mercedes just fired 15.000 people.... So thanks, non-Tesla car factory managers, what will my petrol/diesel car be worth in a few years? Why has it huge maintenance costs in comparison to electric vehicles? I wish you a job at Nokia (or perhaps at Kodak?) You'll feel at home for sure! Except mr. Ford, VW, GM and co are all building out fast charging networks such as Electrify America and Ionity in Europe. So in the not too distant future the supercharger network will lose its importance. Autonomy isn't a huge deal for most people. Tesla's energy sector investment has resulted in literally zero gains apart from the a useless building that Tesla have branded the second Gigafactory. Vertical integration isn't entirely necessary particularly when you have massive and already fully developed supply chains. Tesla only vertically integrated because they had very little else they could do. When it comes to battery production I can't argue that Tesla is out in front by miles. All this has maybe a small influence in stock value although not enough to take it to the heights it's reaching.

The car manufacturers don't have this. The legacy brands would not only need electric vehicles to compete. They would also have to change there business model. Something people don't realise. I think it’s bold to attribute that exclusively to Tesla.... what started the ball rolling was the 1990 CA law that required automakers to make and sell (or lease) electric vehicles to continue selling IC vehicles in the state. That made automakers consider a future with mass EV production. People wanted EVs before Tesla became mainstream too. Recall Nissan started the electric craze with their leaf, then Tesla merely compounded that frenzy two years later with the release of their model S. They certainly have presented a challenge to legacy manufacturers, but I think it’s ambitious to attribute them exclusively to the changing tides of an entire industry

Not only this single startup is forcing to ALL big car companies to change to EV (against their will) but also this single startup is already 5+ years ahead in hardware technology (custom chipset, battery, power train, charging network) and software (self driving + user interface). Tesla won't die any soon, they will just continue showing others the path to follow and will get fun on the way.

It is an impressive achievement in the modern age even though electric cars have been around since the 1830's. Just as relevant for other car makers going electric is emission regulations as they can be fined hundreds of millions of dollars if their collective co2 rate is too high with so many internal combustion engines in their lineup !.

NOW PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT THE ENTIRE WORLD - Not only the US. I now get why many Americans have such a narrow view on topics outside the US. On the European market for example, Tesla is having a tough start due to its competition (established brands e.g. Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, VW which dominate the upper end market) and a completely different customer behavior (e.g. focus on design and reputation. You can’t even try comparing a Mercedes and Tesla interior since MB outclasses them by miles). Plus, Teslas are more expensive in Europe, leading to the fact that for the price of a Model 3 you get a Mercedes E-Class or a BMW 5-Series which actually should be the competitors to the Model S. The Model X is priced so high that you can get a full specced Audi Q7 for the same price.

The only way for the IC car manufacturers to catch up with Tesla and really make the transition to the new paradigm is to make their cars able to recharge wirelessly, having a standardized charging device embed on the bottom of the vehicles and create a network of wireless charge stations all across the US. They can even open the market for new entrepreneurs to invest in those charging stations. When you park the car in a parking lot of a mall, supermarket, etc., you will be prompted if you want to recharge and how much you're going to pay for kWh. At the end of the month, you will have a consolidated bill, from various energy providers. To make sure your bill is accurate, your vehicle will have the log of all your chargings, that can be seen on your car's panel, phone app or online.

The idea that your car will get better while you own it, and will not become technologically obsolete the minute you drive it off the lot, is just as revolutionary as the electric drive train. Also, the buying experience is superior because it's entirely online, and the price is the price.

In Europe you dont need this, everything is near each other which is why Tesla is so rare in Europe, in Canada Tesla is apparently quite rare as well because its too cold for the batteries so petrol isn't going anywhere there and the same goes for Russia. Nobody laughed, car manufacturers just new electric vehicles weren't really profitable. And they still aren't, Tesla is still hemorrhaging money being kept afloat by taxpayers' money and capital investments from people hoping it will at some point in the future return a profit. The title of the video was written by a Tesla fanboy. Challenge Tesla how? Making cars? Yeah considering all electrics combined add up to like 4% of total car sales I'd say Tesla is the one who may want to do some challenging, they didn't put that figure in the video. Until Tesla starts making real money to pay for itself - which it hasn't yet - it still hasn't proven any of the other manufacturers wrong when they decided not to put all their eggs into electric cars because it wasn't profitable. And if Tesla reaches than point a quarter of a century after it was founded (which is looking like that'll be the case), then everyone else was still right, they were pushing for something before the market was ready for it. The other manufacturers who are not starting to invest into electrics did the smart thing, they invested into ICEs and made bank for the last several decades and now that there's actually money in electric cars they switch to that.

Sometimes I do wish Tesla or their competition will design a basic model out for folks with a budget like me. yet all of them are at least $40k in Canada. I am sure I ain't the only one with this situation as well, so there should be a market potential for automakers to design one for the modest earning middle class. The million dollar question is when will EV become cost effective to produce at a mass level. if only BYD would sell their EV cars in North America, it would have been nice, but given the fact they only focus on commercial vehicle when it comes to sales outside of China, I am out of luck.

IMO, the main reasons for Tesla being dominant is: - Established automakers sell millions a month, EV sales is miniscule by comparison. - EV's have not been profitable for a long time. - consumer attitude to EV's have been difficult to read. My take is that big auto hoped 3rd parties would develop autonomous driving (Bosch), enough good batteries (LG, Panasonic), Motors (LG, Sony, Bosch) etc but they have been slower than anticipated, probably because of lack of large scale interest besides the Teslarati. As Tesla is now making it, big auto has started to ramp up. They are behind, but won't be in 10 years.
