In recent years, professional and amateur cyclists alike have started riding with narrower handlebars on their road bikes. In theory, this should reduce your frontal area and make you more aerodynamic. But what affect does this have on other aspects of riding, like handling and control? In this video, Alex compares a few different handle bar widths to help you decide which is right for you!

40cm is my exact size. I rode and raced 42cm for years because it was just more comfortable. Went back down to 40cm for while. Tried 38, but suffered neck and shoulder pains even on short rides. Now back to 40cm non-flared drop bars on both road and gravel bikes.

I have 44CM bars but I want to go down to 40CM as I find narrow bars more comfortable on the road, theoretically 44CM should fit me the best but I've found that I far prefer 38-40CM on the road and 76-78CM off road. I think it just comes down to what you're used to and how you ride more then anything

Fun fact: Nairo Quintana uses a 'wider than shoulder handlebar'. It helps him to open up his chest while climbing out of the saddle and the increased drag doesn't bother him because he always has some teammates nearby to shelter him from the wind on the flat sections.

I have seen a lot of races in Latin America, and many climbers there use wider bars because of the handling on the steep sections. Some say that it gives them the feeling of having more leverage when the speed drops in the uphill bends and they are on slightly too tough gears.

Great video; love Alex as a presenter. I think the best width for handlebars is the one that most closely matches your shoulder width, especially if you're going to be riding for several hours. I'm a medium-height, fairly scrawny person (i.e., built like a stereotypical road cyclist). My current bike was fitted stock with 44cm bars, which is way too wide for most people who don't play rugby, but I was reluctant to change them because I was worried about control on dirt. After suffering neck and shoulder pain on longer rides once too often, in desperation I switched to 40cm bars, and, surprise, they are WAY more comfortable. I have not experienced any appreciable loss of control in any situation with the new narrower bars. Unless you're just a big, wide-shouldered lad, or doing full-on mountain biking, I don't think anything over 42cm is a good idea if you're trying to ride for longer than two hours at a stretch.

I'm an average 6' tall skinny guy. I ride mostly bad pavement and rough trails, even on my steel road bikes. I enjoy more comfort, better breathing, most importantly, best control and handling of the bike with at least 46cm bars. That's the narrowest I'd buy for decades. I started using dirt drops the last few years. There's lots of new shapes to ease pressure on your wrists and get more comfortable on long rides. My favorite roadish/touring bars are 48cm Nitto Noodles. My favorite offroad bars are 56cm Ritchey Venturemax. Both these bars have a bit of backsweep which really eased pain on my ski injured wrists. Bars this wide are going to require much shorter stems and a much higher position to handle the rough stuff well. These bars are also designed to ride primarily in the hooks, where you have lowest cg, most leverage and control, as well as best leverage on the brake levers. Riding on the hoods is NOT a secure hand position on rough terrain. The other positions are only good for resting or changing up your position to stretch occasionally. I have so much leverage and control, I can ride my skinny tire 'cross bike through rock gardens, trials style. As far as 'cross, monstercross, dirt touring, gravel and drop bar mtb are concerned I throw out many of the roadie fit rules and aero silliness. They don't have any relevance and they just don't work offroad. Comfort and control is whats most important on long grueling rides.

Mine are traditional round bend, shallow, flared, 40cm wide bars. I hope I described them right. Anyways. I would like you to explain the curve of bend and stuff more. There are so many types. Did I call it right, when I said "traditional round bend" It's when it's when the drop has even curvature for bend.. like with non changing radius on every point at bend. I like that more. It seems that it's easier to get hods on right point on that round bend. My bike had with non round bend drops and then I had so difficult to get hoods on right place. When I tilted hoods upward to hold comfortable from hoods. I could not reach the brake levers from drops. If I tilted/rotated whole handlebar in stem, the hoods got too high(I had already all spacers out below stem) And also the ends of drops pointing too much downward. But after I replaced handlebar with round bend handlebar. I got it pretty comfortable. Now I can ride also on hoods pretty comfortably.. ^_^

There's a trend in bikepacking where people are using >50cm dropbars on an mtb style frame for low speed handling with high trail, and having the space to fit a big front roll. The panorama cycles Taiga EXP comes specced with 52cm dropbars out of the box.

I pretty much just put my arms straight out in front of me and that points to a 42 or 44 bar. My dad has this old 'supermarket special' road bike which came with something like a 38 and whenever I used to borrow it you could definitely tell! I imagine the 36cm bars might bring your arms in to the point where breathing feels constricted (unless you consciously bend your elbows out Froome-style!) and I should think sprinting on the drops feels weird too (if you are used to 42-44 I mean)...

One of the most useful aspect of a narrower bar for me is navigating a tight crit race; when bumping shoulders and fitting through tight gaps, a wider bar can hook onto another riders’ wrist or bar and cause a crash.

On my road bike I used to run 44cm bars. I have recently changed then to 42cm riser drop gravel bars. Now I used to them. They feel great. When I first fitted them and got out the saddle. For 3 seconds they scared the s*** out of me. The second time I was out the saddle about the same as normal. If I remember correctly I had been using my mountain bike quite a bit. So going from 760cm riser bars to 42cm drop bars was quite a shock to the system.

@artt3231 2 роки тому
@@scottlstone Yes, this is always the tricky point.. and bike shops, like in the good old days, aren't always in a position to loan you the different sizes needed as no spares, or fear you then go buy online?... Not the most sustainable to buy a few in alu just for the sizing... Check with local road cycling groups, Facebook... But if you can't borrow one, than purchase of a cheap one will be critical! I wouldn't focus too much on feel difference (carbon vs alu) as your main objective, at this very first stage, is more around your physical mechanics (posture, comfort, etc.) than difference between the two... Carbon is known to handle vibrations better than aluminum (but GCN probably has a video on that :D)... Good luck!

With reasonably wide shoulders (48" chest), I tend towards the bigger bars. I rode 46s for many years, and still have them on 3 of my bikes, but have now gone down to 44s when replacing. They "feel" narrow when swapping from the 46s (which are uber comfortable). TT bike has 42s. That feels stupidly narrow and unstable. I guess it's all in the shoulder width. SO screw fast / comfy / control and get them correctly sized to your shoulders.

Important to compensate change of bar width by adjusting stem length to keep a similar fit and feel. If increasing bar width by 2cm then decrease stem by 1cm Also take into account reach on different bar designs and check how the manufacturer actually measures bar width, is it Centre to Centre of outside hood to hood measurement. I use a 460mm bar with a 90mm stem on a gravel bike, 400mm and 130mm combo on one bike, 420/120 on my main bike and 780/30 on my MTB but do enjoy experimenting with different widths.

I'm not sure why that would be the case. Imagine you have a 40 cm bar and your arms are straight... Let's say you have 70cm long arms... So the "reach" from your shoulders to the handlebars is 70cm... Now let's swap to a 42cm bar. According to Pythagoras, we know that the new reach from shoulder to handlebar is now sqrt(70*70-1*1) = 69,99. It has barely changed. Sure, your hand position might be a tiny bit different as well. But by no means it will be a a 1cm stem change for a 2cm bar width change.

Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

I use 48 cms, Nitto Noodle. Wide, yes, but I still do fast times. Really comfortable - lots of power input. And if you want to get an aerodynamic shape - its easy - just pull your elbows in, and a keep low profile. I'm willing to bet I'm as aero as many people on their 26 cms.. And I definitely feel an advantage uphill - great for honking - saves energy, more power efficient.

How does one measure bar width? I'm pretty sure my stock bars are 44's but I feel like 40 or 42 might be better for me based on how I ride
@johns3106
@johns3106 2 роки тому
Depending on the brand, bars are measured center-center or outside-outside at the end of the drops. As stated, traditional sizing is to pick the bar that is approximately as wide as your shoulders.

Ape-hanger, sting-ray style with streamers are preferred but I am poor ;so will have to settle for my carbon drops on the crossbike.

I am very tall and have quite broad shoulders. I should be using a 48cm bar. But they normally don’t make all models this wide. So I stay with my little 44cm. Which is alright. I would never go narrower than that though.

Whatever comes with the bike. I got 42cm and 44cm and I like the 44 more. I'd totally try the 46cm if road bars weren't such a pain in the ass to install.

Do it once get the hang, do it twice get faster, do it three times you become an expert! Don’t let it put you off as you won’t maximise your riding if you don’t hone your controls/setup and when you find that sweet spot you’ll know it instantly.

I assume people sometimes use narrower bars when riding in cities and filtering through packed traffic.
@AtibaQuildan

I'm not sure if that test was really fair. If you change your bar width you are effectively changing your reach which completly changes the charactics and fit of the bike. It would be simular to changing your crank length without changing your saddle height.

Narrow bars/tighter tuck may be faster but if you’re not a 20 something and insanely flexible then your in for a whole lot of pain!

I run 44s to but I shortened my stem to make the reach correct.we’ve been putting our hands to get her on the tops for ever I think tappi won a few classics in this position.

I don't know how wide my handlebars are, I think they're 44 but they're definitely not narrow. I tried an 80s road bike with what I think was a 38-40 and I hated how twitchy it was, didn't suit me physically at all. I like em wide.

Had a 44 as standard, my height dictates a larger size frame but then I'm also a skinny git, changed to a 40 and felt 10 times more comfortable. Not sure why the bike industry assumes that if you're 6ft 2" tall you must be built like a rugby player!

Although narrow handle bars are a few grams lighter and technically lower your co-effeicient of drag, you can do those 2 things way better if you just throw away the handlebars and hold it by the stem. Look, if you have wide shoulders, if you spend a few hours riding with narrow bars, you will FEEL what a dumb idea narrow bars are. A good bike shop will measure the width of your shoulders and install handlebars that FIT you when you purchase a bicycle.
