Zuko didn’t run, and everything was stripped away from him. Aang felt like everything was going to be stripped away from him, and so he ran. Every time I watch this episode I’m blown away by how convincingly the creators of this show made Aang and Zuko mirrors of one another

throughout the show Aang is 12. in the first or second episode he asks Katara if he looks like an 112 year old man to her.

The Storm, Zuko Alone, and the beach are easily like top 5 in the show imo which is fun since they all are mostly about Zuko

Correction: They wanted to send in a DIVISION to be sacrificed, not a battalion. Meaning they wanted to sacrifice 12-20 thousand new recruits

It's a rule of thumb that any Avatar episode that heavily features flashbacks will be one of the best entries of that season 😊

this episode still gets me. I remember watching when it aired, being the same age as Aang at that time, and just sitting there. I hated Zuko so much and suddenly I just. couldn't? It was one of the first shows I can think of that ever challenged my young brain to think past "this is the good guy, he does good things. this is the bad guy, he does bad thing."

Aang is 12 and if you want to see an even greater example of how bad the world is and how much common people don’t like the Avatar read the novels and compare how they treat them then and now

"The avatar gives Zuko hope" is a great line! This parallel of Zuko and Aang gets set up a lot more obviously as the series progresses, but to see it this early and kinda subtly is really cool. The show transitions motives in super intersting way. Zuko's goal changes but motive stays pretty consistant? Zuko still hinges hope on Aang even as his goals change, so having Iroh point that out so early makes the transition of Zuko's transformation a lot easier. It's built throughout Zuko's arc. I agree for sure that this show did so well in part because it allowed it's characters room to grow in authentic ways! Great video :D (also pls ya'll I know he asked to be corrected about Aang's age and stuff and prolly would've been best to look up before finishing the script and filming but this is a super great analysis and deserves more said about all the effort that went into it!)

this show becomes a deep show the deeper you get into your journey. as a kid its just a cool show but when you get older and rewatch it, you understand it to a degree thats so relatable. thats why i love this show.

Aang is 12 as everyone else has stated, but the monks told him he was the avatar early because of Fire nation expansionist. Traditionally they would inform an avatar at age 16-18.

It’s a good episode, but I’d argue that episode 3 of the first season is among those perfect episodes. It’s the episode that shifts our thinking from Nickelodeon cartoon with some cool ideas and tells us, there will be real story telling.

There's barely any filler in the entire show. When they're not majorly fleshing out a character's backstory or advancing the plot, they're nailing home some of the best thematic material ever seen in a kids show, or at the very least providing very interesting worldbuilding. When I convince others to check out Avatar, they'll ask, "so we'll skip the filler episodes?". And I can maybe only think of two episodes in the show's entire 60-episode run that you could possibly cut out and still be able to follow the story, and even those two episodes are quality stuff either way. Absolutely zero wasted airtime and it ends just before wearing out its welcome.

I’m so excited for the Avatar videos coming soon. This show and this characters mean so much to me in so many levels, and I’m sure you can give us some unique perspectives to it, with the same passion and care you gave to Arcane and its characters (another very important show to me). To be fair to the old man, he grew up during the war, as a kid his father most likely was killed in the war and thus he holds resentment to the avatar, somebody who was supposed to aid everybody and stop this, just didn’t show.

There needs to be a what if episode of what would have happened if Aang had died during the first storm? He would've been born to a water tribe but how would Sozin have used the comet? If he found out that the air nomad avatar died maybe he redirects his comet genocide against the water tribe instead of the air nomads. If he doesn't find out the air nomad avatar died. The new water tribe avatar would've grown up in secrecy. How soon would the water tribe risked the new avatars life. It would've been impossible for the avatar to learn Airbending with the air nomad genocide still happening. It'd be difficult to get an earth bender without being discovered. It would've been practically impossible to find the avatar a fire bending teacher. It would be an interesting graphic novel to see or maybe a short series from avatar studios.

"The Avatar and the Fire Lord" is probably my all-time favorite. The line, "Some friendships are strong, they can even transcend lifetimes," is always a gut punch, as well as the reveal that Avatar Roku was also one of Zuko's great-grandfathers. And talk about ugly weeping... I'm reminded of when Fang dives down in a vain attempt to protect Roku from the pyroclastic flow, and then immediately we hear a newborn baby, Aang, crying. 😭

When you mentioned the juxtaposition of Aang's and Zuko's pasts in The Storm, it suddenly made me think of why storms happen in real life.

This was the episode that made this show go from good to great. While it is a show for kids, it is very important to not underestimate kids them and insult their intelligence. Kids can handle darker and complicated themes as long as there is balance in the story told. This is for me simply a perfect show and the less good episodes still have importance to the overall arc.

I think this episode didn't air in my area. As a kid I was a massive fan and always watched this show when it was on TV so I had definitely seen them all. Yet, when it dropped on Netflix and I binged the whole thing, I didn't recognize this episode at all.

Zuko is relatable to me almost on a subconscious level . My biological father leaving me when I was one and my "stepdad" turning out to be a complete asshole I had my grandpa as a father figure (RIP grandpa, I miss you every day)

The Southern Air Temple, This episode, The Winter Solstice Part 2: Avatar Roku, the season 1 two part finale, (Siege of the North) The Blind Bandit, Bitter Work, Zuko Alone, Tales of Ba Sing Sei, Lake Laogai, The Awakening, Sokka's Master, The Beach, The Avatar and the Fire Lord, The Day of Black Sun Two Parter, The Southern Raiders, The Ember Island Players, and Sozin's Comet Part 3 are the perfect episodes in the series for me (Yes, in my opinion season 2 is overrated, but still better than season 1 and season 3 is the magnum opus of the series).
