Why F1 has outlawed Aston Martin’s rear wing trick for 2023

Sometimes in Formula 1, the reward for innovation is short-lived. That’s certainly the case for the clever rear-wing endplate geometry Aston Martin introduced in July’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
While the design is completely legal, the interpretation of the rules that has effectively allowed Aston Martin to bring back the rear-wing endplate in F1 will not be possible in 2023 thanks to the regulations being tightened up.
Were the rules to remain unchanged, it’s likely that most - if not all - rival teams would adopt the design. After all, you can’t keep a good idea down.
So why is this endplate concept going to be outlawed, why was it legal - for now at least - and what does it mean for Aston Martin’s 2023 car?

I get your point (dig your videos BTW) but it wasn't that it was looking ominous for those teams that was the problem. It was ominous that they would make use of that concept but do it better, reducing the effectiveness of the rules designed to increase the ability of cars to follow each other more closely. Personally I'm a fan of the new rules that allow the cars to engage in prolonged fights for position without destroying their tires. I don't want the series to lose that.

I’m actually loving everyone sleeping hard on Aston Martin. Many are in for a shock next year. They have been on a recruiting tear. Their facilities will be state of the art and by far the best in the game (the last f1 factory was built 17 years ago). It will be the first “smart factory” meaning the engineering teams will be able to run thousands of simulations in realtime across all areas of the car (this is a ridiculous advantage no one else will have until they build it themselves). They don’t lack funds and will be taking full advantage of their extra WindTunnel time earned from this year. They designed two separate car concepts and essentially wrote this season off from the start to improve next years car through testing new parts on the track (not just CFD). And lastly, they now have Fernando. Who, as Fallows puts it, is the only one on Max’s level right now. Vettel was great but hasn’t been great for many many years. Fernando is a different animal altogether. It’s clear Papa Stroll is looking to build the team into success (and doesn’t really give two hoots about Lance’s career at this point). Not to mention Aramco who now has much more to play for than Stroll to make it a success. I’m getting early RBR vibes. Even Max said he’s got his eye on Alonso next year. I think next year is when we’ll see the “real” Aston Martin for the first time. I see them attaining a possible 4th place next year and a top 3 contender in 24.

I think The Race should do a video on your opinions about innovation and restriction. I feel like part of the problem with car rules in F1 is that many of them are not simply for safety, and for their so called "raceability". So at what point should the governing body restrict car evolution? Since so many parts like the tires, wheel covers, engine size, etc are already unchangeable, where left is any true innovation to be had? Why not just make F1 a spec series then like everything else? I would love to hear your discussion on these topics.

Their real choice was try to take advantage of it for the brief period they could or ignore it and try something else. The fact they chose the former honestly suggests they were either a little desperate or were sure they were basically going to scrap this current car concept totally for 2023 anyway and didn't want to waste too much R&D budget on it. My guess would be a bit of both given that the entire 2022 AM car was a bit of a hedge. Something about this just feels eh. Like why did you put so much effort and time into trying to find loop holes instead of just making your car better. It had a negligible effect on their pace, yet so much time went into finding the loop hole in the rules, designing a workaround and then showing your homework to the FIA, and could probably safely assume that it would be banned either in season or the following, bc it is "against the intention" of the rules, just like anything that is against the intention gets banned, and all for what? No pace. Seems like all that time could have been better spent elsewhere.

I don't mind that they banned this solution from next year since it's against the whole idea of low wake car, but I think the team that is the most happy with this decision is actually AMR since this was bad design. To me the story of this wing was: Stroll visits R&D center during green RB meme period and complains that they are being laughed for only being capable of badly copping other teams and to fight that they must show something unique. Then someone said - "we tested quite unique rear wing but it's draggy as hell and will make us even slower." Stroll replied - "As long as it's unique I don't mind if it's slow, journalists will make geniuses out of us. They like unique designs no matter if they are good, look how much they were praising Mercedes for the 0-pods."

If it means the car gets an extra performance without harming others around that's fine for me, but it's not the case, we don't want more turbulence, the new rules are working well and cars are able to follow each other better (without over heating the tyres due to lower grip). If Ferrari and Mercedes hadn't screwed up (the first the strategy and the second the car) we would great close battles (as we are having in the midfield at least)

After watching F1 for over 10 years. I must say that I'm hugely disappointed by the sport now. Isn't F1 meant to be the pinnacle of vehicle development in the world? So why tf everytime we see innovative thinking and design is it banned? Just because the FIA wasn't able to come up with the ideas and designs itself? This sport has become so lame. One or two drivers out of 20 have an actual chance at the title? If I wanted to watch a sport like that I'd watch boxing. I just wish there would be less tinkering and focus with the regulations and more just letting teams design whatever car they want (obviously within some basic design guidelines) and just let the drivers drive as hard as they want. All the overtaking rules have killed the racing tbh not the fundamentals of car design.

It depends on how you think about "racing". If a team designs a car that is that much faster than any other car are their drivers really _racing_ anyone? It's more like they're just driving away and leaving everyone behind. In the end F1 has to walk a fine line. We want constructors to be able to build fast cars but we don't want them to be so fast the competition suffers. I personally prefer the rules being designed to prevent teams from running away with the championships but I understand it's a matter of personal preference.

It's a series where you design cars to a set of regulations. You don't get penalized if you do it within those rules, and the regulations can change from year to year. This is really no different from the time period where they had 1.5 liter engines in the 60s for a little bit, but in this case it's to ensure we don't go back to teams covering their cars in aero details that have the added benefit of making it impossible to follow and overtake, like 2014-2021 was so horrendous with.
