$300 for this Tent?
Snugpak has to be out of their mind!
It has been almost 10 years since I have initially reviewed the Snugpak Ionosphere and unfortunately, this is a tent that I can no longer recommend.

almost everything is made in China. Some companies have better contracts and better quality control. Fjallräven, Hilleberg, stuff like that where nobody ever said it's cheap or badly made. Then there's those who don't care that much. Snugpak always had two lines: made in the UK and made in China. Even their Chinese made gear was okay. this changed only in the last couple of years. all my Snugpak stuff is older and I have no complains at all.

It is sad to hear this review. I have an eight-year-old Ionosphere that I have had zero issues with, and it is one of my favorites. Thanks for keeping us apprised of what SnugPak has reduced itself to. I have some recent copies of their dry bags, and they are pretty well made and have kept my gear dry, but they are not as lightweight as offerings from places like Sea to Summit.

@Bobby T “naive reviewer”, hardly? You did not express a lot of valuable content in your very long “rant”, do you work for the company that he is reviewing, maybe?
@lovespurpleflowers
@lovespurpleflowers Рік тому
@Bobby T iI have been in the woods longer than you have been alive, Kid! You go ahead and try to survive out there in the woods with trash products made in certain countries? Polyester does not “breathe” properly in my experience so tent materials and how the tent is made is crucial; you are very young and you seem like you might be from another country by your use of english. Why not start your own channel with your own opinions instead of behaving badly on someone else’s channel, especially one who goes out and actually tests the product which you do not do, right?
@lovespurpleflowers
@lovespurpleflowers Рік тому
@Bobby T P.S. The best tents out there are “military grade” which the materials are described as follows “The Vinyl General Purpose Small Tent is a six-sided pyramid-style tent made from cotton canvas and vinyl material supported by a center pole and sidewall poles”. Best material for military grade tents begin with material made with a grade from 1,000 to 10,000mm is fully waterproof. Yes, poly/cotton canvas material can be excellent as well if it is well made because it dries out faster!

I have a Snugpak Ionosphere and I paid well over $200. for it. I got over the price when I decided to buy it based on your last in-depth 2-part review of it, as well as other sources. I was a Ranger for 8 yrs and things like the odd loose thread that I can clip immediately are not things I even notice. I appreciate the low-profile shape and color most AND having that much inside space in what essentially is a "spacious bivy" more than a real 1-person tent and for me? The fact that it hasn't leaked, it keeps the bugs out and is light enough for me, means that it checks off MOST of the boxes. My one Con is I wish the poles folded into quarters instead of thirds. It would make everything so much easier to pack inside a pack. Good looking out though.
@mlsknnr
@mlsknnr Рік тому
I know that Campmor used to sell everything needed for building replacement poles for tents. I don't know if they still do or not but it might be worth looking into so that you can make your own 4 section poles. Just a thought.

The only SnugPak product I have is the 100L Bergen which I cannot fault at all. Surprised about the pricing outside of the UK, in the UK their products are still pretty reasonably priced, I paid around £125 for the bergen if memory serves which is a pretty good price for the quality of bag.

So nowadays I have moved to other manufacturers. It is a shame as I used to love the products and used to recommend them, but I now advise them to use other companies who provided a better product for the same prices if not cheaper.

I have enjoyed the Ionsophere, bought a few years back. But my new favourite tunnel tent after last year is a Naturehike Opalus 2, in 20D nylon. It's kind of like the ionosphere but has a vestibule, can be set up fly first, bit more room. I should say whenever I used it, the rain just vanished, so still have to test it full-on.

@dutchbachelor Рік тому
I was looking at that about two years ago when I wanted a new tent. So glad that I went with the Jack Wolfskin Gossamer II that you tested too which is also bigger than the Ionosphere. Even that is a bit on the small side for me. I got that for 219,- Euros and for that, it is excellent value. And as for them as a company: that is when the beancounters and consultants take over and they start cutting corners and abandon what made the brand great to begin with. They don't care. All they care about are their spreadsheets and investors earnings which ultimately runs them straight in the ground.

Thank you very much for trying it out for us. I have similar experience with sleeping bag. I have 2 older sleeping bags, used and abused and still somewhat holding up, and I bought new sleeping bag a year ago and it has countless holes. So it seems to be more material rather than manufacture problem. Either way it's great to know I wasn't imagining it. My next sleeping bag is going to be different brand for sure. It's a pity, my 10 year old Antarctica sleeping bag is a work horse. Still going strong. Oh well. Thank you very much for the info! Much appreciated.

I used to like Snugpak and I once got some clothing made to measure at their home factory several years ago and they did a great job. I have asked them several times since UK covid restrictions were stopped over a year and a half ago. They are still refusing my requests. I am approx 6ft 9 in tall and weigh 180 kilos . Now I am struggling to find any outdoor clothing or equipment to fit me now . The few companies thar are doing outsized clothing for the UK market are charge astronomical prices and are wondering why no one is buying their stuff . An ideal business opportunity for the right person with good tailoring skills . Decent video and thanks for keeping us aware of such things .

I have had the snugpak jungle blanket and the sleeping bag liner for about 8 years now, and they are great. As for their tents , I've never been overly impressed with them. I have, however, been a big fan of Jack Wolfskin. I have the Gossamer 2 tent, and it is amazing for the price and size here in the uk. You can't go wrong. I have also started looking at the Crua tents and a Crua Modus with the insulated liner. That tent was great at -7.

I appreciate you pointing out the polyester materials used in construction. I’ve definitely noticed across the board many companies marking up, suggested retail prices on tents and other outdoor gear. Inflation does contribute, but as you pointed out many of these products have doubled in price. I had never looked into the materials, used in snug pack, but assumed it was ripstop nylon due to the fact that I had heard military was using their products. You’re totally right polyester is a cheap fabric and what they’re selling you is marketing speak. They’re selling us a sales pitch these days not a quality product.

Well, I took my Snugpak Scorpion 3 to the NH mountains this weekend (bought it 3 or so years ago). Campground closed after I got there, nobody there but me. Long story short, it took everything mother nature could throw at it. Heavy, wet snow, sleet, high winds and then constant, cold rain. I could hear the wet snow sliding down the sides of the tent during the night, and no - the top of the tent wasn't an issue either. Did it sag a big under the weight of the snow? Yep. Did it do a good job shedding most of that snow/water? Yep. Did it collapse or leak? Nope. Only knocked snow off when I got up too, not throughout the night. A LOT of my other stuff got damp or flat out wet. This tent was my one refuge, the one place I knew I'd be safe and dry. It was and remains, one of my best purchases... EDIT: I researched a bit further, and the Scorpion 3 "IX" they're selling now... has much cheaper/flimsier poles. And if they're cheaping out on that, you can bet the other materials are likely inferior too. Sad. Snugpak, please do something to restore your reputation. You can start with lowering your prices by the 2/3rds you increased them by!!!

I purchased their 100L bergen last summer, and the chest strap came loose from stitching after five days of use. Here in the UK the ionosphere has gone up in price to £200 for the olive,£225 for the camouflage version. I was interested in buying one, as I wanted a tent to use for the odd nite out stealth wild camping, but seeing your video has halted that..Thank You so much for the heads up. I’m definitely not taking the risk of buying one. I note on the UK a website it states they still manufacture sleeping bags and outdoor clothing in the UK. No mention of where the Tents are manufactured. I do have their Bunker tent, even after 8 years of use is still performing like a bunker, incl in heavy snow,winds,rain.

I've bought several Snugpak products: Antarctic mats, tent boots, and a Jungle Blanket. Can't say that they're bad at all. Pricey, perhaps. But not bad. Thank you, Luke! I previously had a Scorpion 3 with no detectable issues. Now I have a green Ionosphere that I got new about a year ago, and it’s going to be tested next week when I go on a little vacation by myself. Wish me luck! Too bad this company is running itself into the ground, because their tents and their pricing seemed also very agreeable to me in the past. Tom from Germany PS: I just checked and my Ionosphere is already made in China. I think I got it new for around €190 a year ago. The outer tent doesn’t have any detectable issues and all the seams are taped just like with my previous Scorpion 3, which held up pretty well in a medium strength rain for a day and one night by the way. I couldn’t tell you if that was also already a China made, as I don’t have this tent anymore, but not because of any detectable issues. I suppose I was lucky, which often I am not, with product fails.

I have a Scorpion 3 that I purchased off Ebay a couple years ago. It was new in box but I think probably a little older. My impression is it was adequate for wind gusting to 40 mph but I wouldn't want it in a heavy snow event because it doesn't allow for the snow to slide off the top (lesson learned). I used it about a month ago at Mount Rainier and we had about 8 inches of fresh snow fall overnight. I had to keep shaking the snow off so the fly didn't sag down into the inner. So far, that is the only complaint I have about it.

To this day I still use their jungle bag and travel blankets and I absolutely love them, especially in their new “terrain” camo. I like it so much I bought three more for the family. Well thought out great design, good extras like ties and loops for pads and liners. Only paid $32.00 ea. we use them very hard! They have held up great. The new ones are over $60.00 and the few reviews I have found are terrible. I almost want to buy one to compare it to my old ones my self.

I bought the Ionosphere years ago. Payed about 170 for it. Haven't noticed any factory defects in mine. But I have noticed the price hike, which is crazy. Also I have heard about quality control issues they have had. Feel lucky I got mine when I did.

I was recently in the market for a small, bivy-style tent and saw all the glowing reviews for the Ionosphere and what a great deal it was for the ~$160 it was. Decided on it and started looking for one, when I saw all the listings for $300 like you say, I was so confused. I found one eBay listing for $160 + $20 shipping from the UK (which was understandable), so I bit the bullet. After I ordered it, I *then* found out that they'd since moved their manufacturing to China and it didn't live up to its former glory. I wish I hadn't bought it, but too late now. The funny thing is, by the time it finally got here, I had decided a tent wasn't really necessary and I could get by just fine making a tarp tent. If I wasn't worried about the price doubling before I decided, I'd have slept on it a little longer, but I figured it was now-or-never at $160. Live and learn, I suppose.

I know a lot of people who got the SP hooped bivy bag. They all suffered under heavy condensation. It still remains a popular product with a quality standard from 2003. Almost anything is better and lighter today.

While I’m sorry to hear of another manufacturer letting quality slip and prices rise I’m glad you shared this review of SnugPak. I’ve heard similar things about their products and hoped they were addressing these issues. At some point they will have to address things or close their door.

I have the Snugpak Endurance rucksack- pretty happy with it, it's relatively heavy, but for the style it's quite light. I'll end up replacing it with a Crossfire DG3 eventually (find a better 55L pack, doubt you'll be able to).

Hi Luke, thanks for the warning, I was about to buy this tent. I am from Germany and there it is currently on sale for 149.95 euros at a vendor, it costs 149.95 euros there normally. The price is almost the same in dollars. I've been watching your videos for a few years, but had a different name back then. The first video was the one with the Swiss Army backpacks. :-) I had bought them all at the time because they are so good, then sold them again for a good price. You always rate your tested equipment fairly and I have never seen you report so disappointed with something. I have not bought the tent now and will watch out there in the future. Thanks a lot

I bought mine four years ago for £120 brand new and I've had zero issues. My last outing was in January in -5°c and was completely toasty. Shame if Snugpak are going downhill because I've also got the Endurance 40 pack and Sleeper Zero sleeping bag and they've been excellent kit.

I've had a jungle blanket for several years and it was worth the $40 or so I paid for it. I use it as a summer quilt in my hammock.

@@BlackcatOutdoors I used it all last year worth the 40 for sure it was even better getting it for 1 dollar. Things people get rid of when they move. I also got other great deals from that rummage sale.

check the quality of the 1440p and 2160p vs 1080p I think your codec choked (or youtube forgot lube) You're right about these tents being too expensive, I could hand-make these at a handy profit at twice the quality at home. A flex arch stuck under the center of the tarp would be a huge improvement and comparatively cheap.

Well said man! The Journey Solo is exactly the same, but with a backpacker orange rain fly, and costs about $100 less. The only Snugpak product I've liked in the last decade is their bivy, but I'm sure that will be ruined soon.

I've always loved my snug pack jungle blanket. I like it better than my old army woobie. The price used to be only 30 bucks. I just checked and it's up to 50. I think it still might be worth it.

Nice to here an honest review. I've been considering purchasing a scorpion 3. What would you recommend as an alternative? I would like to get a top quality 4 season 3 or 4 person tent. Leaning more towards durability rather then weight reduction, however a 40lb canvas tent is definitely a deal breaker. You know what I'm saying in sure.
