The important thing is whether they are the official opposition or not, ie the 2nd largest party. The official opposition gets much more speaking time in parliament and a lot of money for staff. Also important is whether they are the second party in individual seats. If someone else becomes the party to vote for if you don't like the labour government then they could be out of power much longer.

Worst case for the Tories would be what happened to the Canadian conservative party in the 90's, where they fully collapsed, the modern conservatives are actually a complete different political party then the one before 1993.
