Sony Xperia smartphones look so good on paper. So why is it that we don't recommend them? Here's our answer to that and a brief 2023 review of the Sony Xperia 1 IV.

not exactly, it's going the LG path kinda even tho LG auto mode is wonderful for it's age V60 from 2020 but they fucked up the marketing so bad that no one was getting them besides LG lovers like I'm. I would love to get an Xperia for me personally but the lack of software support like he mentioned is a killer I can't justify spinning big money for a phone with that kinda support I would rather get myself a Samsung flagship and get an external media player

In my opinion doing that does the exact opposite of winning people over. That move made business sense for Apple because they already have the most loyal customer base of any tech brand ever. You could maybe argue that also applied to Samsung (though even their flagships are getting destroyed by the iPhone in sales, with there now being effectively very little that gives their S phones the edge over the iPhone). For other brands I think it would be way more beneficial to actually offer more features in order to actually pull people away from Samsung and Apple.

@@walid6329 Fair point but the same could easily be said about Samsung. I can't justify spending $1000 on a phone which has a black hole on the screen, no expandable storage (especially considering the lowest storage option is 128 GB, with a 200 MP camera which takes gigantic pictures which use a lot of space), a weird aspect ratio and no headphone jack

That's not true, there's no part of 'appealing to a large audience' that requires the removal of the headphone jack and sd card. You make it sound like that's something consumers ask for and that's not the case. Those are blatantly anti consumer practices that do not benefit the user in anyway. The goal was to make more money and when apple showed it's possible and how much money you can really make the entire industry followed suit. Just like removing the charger claiming everyone already has a charger when almost no one has the special charger the new device requries.

Typically whichever section of the store is dominated by one brand it seems, that's the brand the store is encouraged to sell the most of. So yes...the Samsung phones get almost ALL the glory because it's all tied to the money. I have had all the latest Xperia and I'd have a lot to say. The Xperia 1 V is spectacular in every way. I agree with the problem of short update support but this phone takes wonderful photos in auto mode, but it gives the best in manual mode. Xperia 1 IV had overheating problems, it's true, but after 2 patches the problem was completely fixed. I would add that with the Xperia 1 V I get 10 hours of screen use, but not at 120hz. I should give it a try. Sony batteries are formidable because after several years they still last a very long time. They have excellent long-term durability. Photos at night now look beautiful, and the audio from videos I record at concerts or in noisy places is incredibly clear. I conclude by saying that the audio jack, the SD card support, the dual-level shutter button, no punch holes are something that I hope they keep in their phones. And speed and responsiveness, god, it's something you have to try! I hope they improve the marketing and extend the years of support!

So true about the battery life. I recently went back to my old XZ1 Compact due to wanting to try a game with a new account without having to switch accounts on my Galaxy S10e. Now, the Compact is SIX years old now (give or take, depending on how you calculate it), and I bought it new and used it for 3-4 years, after which I had to buy a new phone because I had dropped the Compact too many times and things were giving away and didn't feel stable anymore. So it has spent about 2 years in my drawer, without really being charged as often as it should have been, but to my surprise, the battery was still alive and well after so much time AND had charge to spare, even though not being charged for MANY months! What's more, upon charging it fully, the battery hasn't really given up at all, it keeps the charge very nicely (but I'm only using the phone with wi-fi now, and playing one game which is very battery friendly) but still...it's a phone from 2017, that has been used for 4 years and then lay in a box for 2 years...and still alive and kicking, and kicking quite good actually! It's even speedier and more responsive than my current phone, which is 4 years old! To me, that is simply amazing. But the old compacts aren't being made anymore and the new compacts aren't really compact, nor do they have good performance (looking at you, Xperia 10). But the battery life...oh wow.

Not all phones under the sun needs to be built for the same people with the same aesthetics same apps and same features. I hate when reviewers take a phone, realize it's not a Samsung or an iPhone and immediately come to the conclusion that everyone should get an iPhone instead or maybe a Samsung if you are old, because the cameras, and phones are actually just cameras with a texting feature attached. I'm sure you've all been very successful in college and learned a ton of stuff to do videos on the internet, but imagine someone wants a phone with flagship SoC and does not take photos at all or once in a blue moon. I feel reviewers are extremely biased, and manufacturers found a great loophole to become user-hostile in the name of "progress" based on their biased feedback, and the average user is left without a choice. I currently use an LG V60, old phone, yet to this day there is not a single device that has all the features I use on a daily basis on my V60, hence there is no replacement for me. I use the desktop mode every day. Great, Samsung has that, but I also use software that only runs on Snapdragon, and Samsung is selling only it's Exynos garbage over in the EU and has the gall to sell it more expensive too. So, I could go with Motorola, but their flagship lacks expandable storage, which would be fine if they were to sell 512 GB or 1 TB models, but they don't. Also the headphone jack. Sure, I could embrace the dongle life, but frankly I lived the dongle life back in the Nokia days, and miss me with that sh1t! It's not even about listening music on the go, I can use a pair of wireless beans if there are no alternatives, but a lot of times I need to test some sound equipment and I need something to play music from, do you really want me to carry around a decades old iPod? Phones peaked around a decade ago, currently all you can buy is trash.
@fujiwarachika2187

Pretty well said, especially the "and phones are actually just cameras with a texting feature attached" part. The person in the video brought up Sony professional cameras and music players, but do the professional cameras have a 4K 120hz display with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2? Can the music player take flagship-grade pictures? Of course not. The idea of a phone is having a wide variety of features in one place. Phones are like a jack of all trades but master of none; not a single smartphone in the entire planet can take the best pictures in the world, or have the best display in the world, or the strongest performance in the world, or the best audio in the world, so I think it's a strange argument to bring up that "if the average point-and-shoot customer won't use Sony phone, and pro camera photographer uses pro camera instead of phone for pictures, who is this phone for?" completely missing that a phone is a phone, not a professional camera nor professional audio player

its not that its just "super niche" its that a lot of parts of it are objectively bad. the auto camera mode is objectively bad, the software support is objectively bad, the software itself is bad, it doesnt have adaptive refresh rate so the battery efficiency is bad, it has overheating problems and the fingerprint sensor is known to fail in many units. if it just had extra enthusiast features there wouldnt be a problem, the problem is all those special features come at a compromise. reviewers dont just hate sony, there are legit criticisms being made and from what i can see, sony doesnt really care to improve these things.

The absence of LG in the market is noticeable; in my view, their final releases (Velvet and Wing) were impressive. I would easily use them, but there was a lack of a cohesive mobile ecosystem and software refinement/updates. Sony seems to sacrifice sales to do things their own way, but when their home country prefers iPhones over Xperias, something really needs to be seriously reconsidered.

I have the LG V60...but I got the S22 Ultra back in March 2022...On February 2023 I decided to move back to my old LG v60 for a few reasons... 1. The LG V60 still has better battery life, I get consistent 8-9 hours screen on time. Compared to the s22 Ultra that gives me 5-6 hours, and thats on FHD+ and 60hz setting. 2. I still prefer photos taken on the V60. The S22 Ultra have to much saturation in colors and dont have Ultra Wide Correction. Also shutter lag on the S22 Ultra is anoying and its an expensive phone to have that problem. 3. The V60 still has more powerful speakers compared to the weaker s22 Ultra. 4. I got a 1TB Sandisk Ultra Pro SD card for cheap that I put in my V60. But using the s22 Ultra for about 11 months then jumping back to the V60, I actually like the more natural colors on the V60. And going down from 1440p screen to a 1080p screen isn't really noticeable to me. But now Im back to Sony's camp as of November 2023 , owning previous Z5 Premium and XZ Premium as well...I am a happy owners of an Xperia 1 V 😊

I don't agree with that last part, since as far as I know, Sony's not trying to be mainstream or the #1 phone company in sales. Apple manufactures way more phones than Sony do, it's only natural that way more people will have them, not to mention Apple is way more aggressive with their marketing and mass-appeal pretty much everywhere. Most people don't buy Apple phones for their specs; they buy them because they're Apple

I am using a Sony (previously Sony Ericsson) phone for about 20+ years, my last one Xperia 1 III purchased a week after they came out in Japan a bit over 2 and a half years ago. I like the phones because yes they have always had to have everything available software and hardware, they are durable and since ages ago i never had to worry if my phone gets wet or even dropped during rain, taking a shower with, or even go across the river with it while submersed in water. That security is what attracts me the most despite all the bells and whistles they have. Their sales can also be redirected to Sony shrinking the availability across the world, and the availability across the size of people's pockets as well. While Sony had their phones available across all the markets in different price groups, for different people 20 years ago, now they barely release a few phones and they are all in the top half or trying to compete on the top of the flagship space. This is one of the things i dont like. Another thing is, they seem to have adjusted their views to the Japanese life and companies, so every year there is a new phone, 2 years later the phone stops being sold, 3 years later they can't even repair it. Maybe luckily the resemblance of the Xperia 1's may have brought better repairability, however 5 years ago when i came to Japan i purchased XZ premium, 2 years later being unable to replace it they gave me Xperia 1 (the first model) as a replacement. Their warranty services offered by providers make the phones in Japan 20-40% more expensive than elsewhere in the world, despite being a Japanese company...... I do love my 1III though, it is still as snappy and seamless as the first day it arrived despite being over 2 and a half years old, but i don't like the bloated camera apps and functions, they really should have added an AIO camera app that does it all by few simple clicks. Also missing the compact phones, sad they didnt dig that and use it out of the Japanese minimalistic point of view...

1:15 the latest generation (xperia 1 V) have sadly removed the notification LED In general its the sales and marketing which determines how much or how little customers get the phone. The vast majority of people buying phones aren't really going to care about the UI aesthetics or how many years of software updates the phone will get. They just care about what's available in the stores they visit and generally what's available there is mostly iphone and perhaps 1-2 big android brands. I mean heck if the UI and software updates were such critical features for consumers, brands like poco and redmi would have flopped years ago. LG is the best example of a brand that actually made fairly good phones but totally botched their sales/marketing to the point where they exited the smartphone market after years of sales declined.

@@BETNCORT That depends on what "vast majority" means to you. The vast majority of people that you see online who actively participate in tech forums, or at least tech-literate enough to look up reviews and hardware/software comparisons? Yes, they would care about build quality, user experience, and long-term support. The vast majority of people *in the real world*? We're talking about people who may buy gadgets just because someone they like owns them (even if it's from an advert), people who don't care enough to research the options they have, and simply buy phones that look the best or are used/recommended by friends; and people who don't know what Android is, let alone which version of it they're using ("What do you mean it's not called Samsung!?"). Since you are under this video, you obviously belong to the first crowd, and so it makes sense you worry about Sony's support for the Xperia line. But no, "most people" will more likely just buy the phone they've seen most often in adverts, whatever recommended to them in stores, or even simply the cheapest. They might complain down the line... but the software becomes what they're used to, they'll simply put up with it lest they have to relearn how to navigate a new phone, especially since OEM ROMs may be look and function wildly different from each other. Hell, they might even opt out of major updates because they're scared of big UI changes, like the jump between A11 and A12! I do not think visibility is all Sony needed to boost sales, as even the most clueless will be immediately turned away by the price tags alone-but your view of the vast majority's tech literacy is overly optimistic if not a little misguided.

@@Usiraata i wouldn't do it if I were you. Cameras will be the same almost, apart from the tele module; speakers will be a bit better; screen will be brighter and have 120hz, but that's about it. It heats up randomly and during heavy gaming/tasks like Genshin Impact, or photo/video editing, and that would be fine really, but the heat is unbearable sometimes, and the throttle is quite noticeable. Plus, being a failed SoC as the 888 is, is also less battery efficient than the 865 used in your Mark II. So, long story short: if you weren't an Xperia user, or had a way older Xperia: yeah, sure, as long as you got prepared for some heat sometimes. But since you have a similar device, that is way more efficient and isn't really missing any crucial feature: don't buy the 1 III. I would decide to spend a little bit more on a 1 V if I were you, since that model is a giant leap regarding features (in almost every single one of them). I think 1IV is worth it just because of it's display. Watching videos on it is something different compared to Samsung or iPhone. Its one of those things you gotta see it to believe it. I wasn't expecting that honestly. I have S22 Ultra and I have 14 Pro Max and when watching Disney movie side by side Xperia 1 IV gives you the creamiest image out of the three. It doesn't oversaturate, it doesn't sharpen, it doesn't boost contrast into oblivion like Samsung does. When it comes to cameras I can say Photo Pro app is overloaded with unnecessary features that you will never adjust more than once or twice. Basically, you can play with ISO, shutter speed, metering and HDR and that's about it. Second, video recording on Video Pro is out of this world if you are familiar with Gain, shutter speed, framerates, white balance etc. CinemaPro on the other hand is kind of useless. Anyway it took me few hours to experiment with different settings in all three apps and I can say that now I have everything covered. I use BASIC mode for burst shooting in SDR and for 4k video recording in SDR with stabilization on. I use PhotoPro in P mode for taking regular photos by only fiddling with exposure and HDR. I use VideoPro app for filming high quality 4k 25fps HLG video with 1/50 shutter with no stabilization and all I do is adjust Gain and white balance before I shoot.

Sony Xperia 1 has most of the features that I would like a in a smartphone except with 1 IV had an overheating issue due to 8 Gen 1, then 1 V removed the notification LED knowing Android 14 would come out with a flashing notification. Wishlist. 3 years Android OS Updates, 4 years of security patches to that of Google/Samsung/Nothing Proper 5G Bands included Option to change the Screen Resolution from 4k to 1440 or even 1080 LTPO Display Start selling to Cell Phone providers so they can increase their market share. I've had Sony phones for a long ass time. XZS, XZ1 Compact, XZ2 Compact, Xperia 5, Xperia 5 III. I buy it for the compact size, front facing speakers, headphone jack, 1080P screen and no holes or notch bullshit. Tho they've gotten bigger and bigger, I feel like Sony's design still have the most amount of common sense, which is really hard to find these days. (except for XZ2 Compact, that thing was trash) I used a HTC One before Sony, since they were the first one to have front facing speakers. Common sense: 1.There's absolutely no need for a phone to have more than 1080P display, it's plenty sharp. My computer screen was 1080P not so long ago. VR cardboard is an edge case, and the only justifiable usage. 2. Don't do something stupid with the screen either, hole punch, notch and screen that rolls over the edge. I'm not saying screen to body ratio is none sense, but those ideas are just dumb, it causes soo much headache for a percentage or two. we already have plenty thin bezels. 3. Front facing speakers, how the fk does any phone not have them? it faces the front because you will be in front of the phone. 2 Speakers because people have 2 ears. They're also symmetrical so the design will be great, you can also utilize the top speaker for calling, lower speaker hole to put the mic inside. 4. Headphone jack?? Do I have to explain this? 5. Screen size. I know that size of the phone is up to personal preference. But at the moment, there are no other compact options out there. I personally like a phone where I could reach everything on the touch screen with just one hand. But sadly even Sony is moving away from that. The newer Xperia 5 are too big. Despite all their flaws, I will keep buying them. They are the closest thing to perfection, even tho they've decided to move away from it every generation. Now for the flaws: 1.They tried to take away the headphone jack with XZ2 Compact, I got rid of that phone immediately. 2.Since the new naming scheme, Xperia1,5,10. They've set up the finger print sensor to trigger on touch, instead of triggering when I actually press the power button. It's always unlock the screen when I didnt intend to, or when I take out of the pocket it registered too many failed unclocks and I have to use the PIN. This almost made me switch to another phone. But after shopping around, a better choice does not exist, not even close. 3. Sony still won't allow people to swap the back and menu button. This is in stock Android FFS!!! They removed it just to annoy people. The perfect phone was XZ1 Compact, nothing has ever come anywhere close. I'll keep buying Sony phones and huffing copium hoping they'll make another XZ1 Compact with modern hardware.

I was a Sony believer during many years and still have a Sony Xperia Z5 compact and I love it, even if it has many drawbacks and is now having real problems due to its old age. The first thing that I did when I decided that I needed to upgrade was to look for the last sony phone models. However, I was really disappointed when I saw these new phones. My priorities with a phone are comfort and usability, and performance in a second place, comfort in my hand and in my pocket also, so I always look for compact phones, and Sony was great with that in the old times. I don't need the super cameras and super displays, if I want to see a film I will see it in my computer, in a bigger screen or I will go to the cinema, I don't use my phone for that. and I don't want to have a television screen in my pocket. Is a pity that they stopped doing compact phones, the nearest that I find in the market are the iphone 13 mini, but I'm not an ios fan, and the samsung 23, but I still don't like them as I liked the old compact Sony phones.

I was once a fan of Sony Ericsson and Sony phones (and even Ericsson, the older GSM/analog models). I loved the cameras so much as they produce natural-looking photos. However, in the later years, when they removed the name "Ericsson," I kept on having battery problems. It happened several times. I tried the Xperia 1 IV last year and I had massive overheating issues during the first month after launch in the US. The camera shots I got from either basic or pro modes were hit or miss. My carrier didn’t formally support the phone so my voicemail experience got degraded to calling in pressing numbers to hear / manage my voicemails. I ended up having to settle in a variety of areas which made the whole experience feel like a downgrade. That said I would consider buying one again if some things improved.

I don't get "software support" rants. Have you ever used a device on its last year of support ? Bugs, lags, all sort of weird behavior - and all that is supposed to help ? What's the point of having latest Android if you don't get latest features, and loose performance ? It's Android, it never mandates latest version to use apps. Yes, I get it - you want updates in general. For a current gen phone - of course, I get it. But for old devices - sometimes it's better to avoid updates at all !

3:46 It's funny to think that in order for a Sony camera-focused smartphone to sell, it requires a very specific set of circumstances on behalf of a potential buyer. 1. Person must have an interest in cameras, photography and/or videography 2. Person needs a new phone 3. Person either does not own any cameras, or needs a very specific kind of camera with a criteria that just so happens to match the featureset of an Xperia phone 4. Budget does not allow for separate camera and phone purchase. I just happen to be one of those potential buyers. Unfortunately, I can only get grey-market imports of their phones because Sony has since pulled out their Xperia from where I live.

I think another reason is, there is no subliminal hard sale in the form of youtube and hardly any advertising. Most typical people don't care about the PASM settings snd what they do. The sensor technology in these alone are worth the extra money along with coated lenses preventing fringing. I owned 3 lg phones which were great besides the G6. The V range were always out my range of affordability and now they are obselete besides third-party hong kong markets. My hope is that they update their pro-i with a better implementation. Again that will be too expensive for general users. Although creators having 2 1-inch sensors at their disposals means they have a great compact solution in their pocket. Nothing Apple has ever produced has made me want to devote my resources to them. With Android you can swap brand and UI without too many incinveniences.

Let's start with price tag and what the buyer is getting for the $1200? 1. Only 2 major OS updates onto 2 years window. 2. SoC throttles because of missing adequate cooling chamber. 3. There's literally no way to find repair spare parts, especially batteries. 4. Finger scanner is dead after software support is done, from my experience I felt that. 5. Because you are Japanese doesn't mean all products you produce are high quality.

At the moment I am thinking about replacing my almost 6-year-old Huawei P20 (I used it for 5 years) with Sony Xperia 5 V, so I found this video. Well, it seems to me that Sony has very poor post-sales support. In first place I want to point at software updates. Hey, they committed themselves for a two-year software updates and three years of security patches. The model is already on market for few months so that means it's not a really two years now. And the phone is quite pricey to expect so short period of support. On other hand, before Huawei, I used to own some Xperia phones, I was fan of their products and my Sony Z3 Compact Tablet is still working like the first day. Although it runs on Android 6.0 :) But for sure, it gives an obsolete feeling when used. I see similar UI design on Xperia 5 V in this video, ah! Another thing, I can't buy it in my country! So, I need to order it online from some UK or US shops. So, I am not sure. The camera performance is important to me as well as software support. Maybe, for that price, the better solution would be Huawei, Pixel or Samsung?

Its absolutely because of the extra features, especially the video, that made me buy an Xperia in the first place, first a Z5 now a 1 II. The video app you were showing in you video in their Cinema version, not the standard point & shoot one, which is easy to use. However, & hence I found myself here, the standard one has an achyles heel; the motorised autofocus gives off a white noise effect on your final video. Not perceptable to the ear, but very annoying on the finished video. So I got an external bluetooth microphone set-up, but Sony doesnt support it on the standard video, only their posh Cinema app. The Cinema app is a right pain to use & controlling the lighting levels & white balance etc, a nightmare. As you rightly said, get a proper Sony video camera for that stuff. Sony need to issue a software update, which allows the use of an external mic or as per their wind noise suppress software, add something so cancel that motor noise.

The main dealbreaker for me is the tall format. If I use the phone with one hand (which I prefer) I just can't hold it and also reach the top part of the screen (and many apps put important features there, so you HAVE to be able to reach it). In one video, I even saw someone holding the phone and they had to change their grip on the phone quite a bit just to be able to reach the top part of the screen. The width is okay, even great, but the tallness...I really would prefer a more normal format. Also, I think the Xperia 1 and 5 are too expensive, so I would want the Xperia 10 instead, but that one uses a middle class CPU with very laggy performance. So since I don't want a tall phone that also lags even in the regular menus, I skip on buying Sony phones, which is sad since I have generally liked their performance and design in the past, but that was when they had true compact phones. For a long while, Sony had a really good standing with people that looked for compact phones, but after a while Sony gave up the compact phone focus and those who wanted smaller phones were quite disappointed in that. I still hope the Xperia 10 VI (6) could offer something more. I could maybe consider buying it if it had a better CPU and no lag. And if they shrink the format and give up that super-tall, super-thin screen, then yes...I will almost positively buy the Xperia 10 VI. I'll hold out a bit longer, but I'll soon have to buy a new phone, due to 3G being taken out of the coverage equation and 5G entering the scene, but my current phone doesn't support 5G and the battery on my current phone also isn't that great, so...I just have to get a new phone, and soon. And Galaxy S24 just wasn't what I wanted, for several reasons.

I've got the Xperia 1 V and I IV, the software experience in term software speed and smoothness is without doubt, the nicest in Android. I sold a pixel 8 Pro recently as it could be laggy at times and frankly, felt underpowered. The point & shoot camera experience though can be hit and miss and I find that frustrating. The S24 Ultra which I recently bought feels like a giant slab in comparison, and a bit unwieldy but it's point & shoot pics will generally be better than the 1 V.

I miss LG phones. Those were really a viable alternative to the Samsungs, iPhones, and Google Pixels, and it's a shame they shuttered that division entirely rather than maybe focus on one branch of the market to weasel their way back.

I own an Xperia 5 gen 1, the fingerprint reader was not great from day 1 and now (3 years later) it's completely dead.

I am using, next to my Samsung S20 FE, a Sony Ericsson, is fantastic how many years this little guy lasts. About Sony, well, Sony and LG felt arrogant years ago with the updates and customer support. Personally I don't care much about updates, but the way both companies looked in comparison to others was arrogant, which is a pity as both companies made so amazing devices.

Their cameras outshine those of Xiaomi, Samsung, and even Apple, not to mention compact APS-C mirrorless cameras. The photos captured aren't overprocessed, cartoonish oil paintings like the ones from Xiaomi, Samsung, and Apple. You can literally print Sony smartphone camera photos on a large scale for your house wallpaper, a feat only DSLRs or MFT cameras can match. Perhaps Apple will persevere with ProRAW, but there's this.

All my life I have been using Sony. Infact , my last Sony was stolen in August 2022. I was forced to buy Nokia (it's a stupid phone it doesn't hv any of Sony's features) if only Sony companies will bring it to Nigeria, I'll do anything to have Sony seriously. Bcos it will always be the best phone ever.

Conflicted. Currently on an Xperia V III. Love fhe size, find it snappy enough for just about everything I do. Like the cameras, and how they turn out aore natural image than other phones (my girlfriend's Realme, for example, cooks pictures to death), but the segmentation in the video features are pretty annoying.

Sony should release the Xperia flagship version phones a month before the Samsung Galaxy phones are released and do some advertising on TV.

Lack of publicity, not sold in retail stores and software update support for the price. I have an xperia 5 II, still works fine but I chose the iPhone 15 as my new phone. I value software and security updates more than hw specs that honestly I don't even really need except the audio hw (jack, dac and ldac) but it's a compromise.
