Power shifting is just like regular shifting in a manual transmission, but you never lift your foot off the gas pedal - clutch goes in and out, while your right foot remains planted and the gear shift is executed. The problem is if you keep the gas pedal down while shifting, your engine RPM goes up, but your transmission wants a lower RPM, so this discrepancy is handled by the clutch, creating a shock load within the system. But you can design your way out of this, watch to learn more!

No lift shift, not power shift, and this isn’t the best way to do it. The best way to do it is to go very close to the rev limiter, clutch in and slam the shifter to the next gear, release clutch slightly slower than usual for traction(if needed). This way, nothing is really working wrong.

It works okay if you're drag racing old American V8 hot rods, but those tend to have much heavier rotating assemblies and flywheels than modern sports cars, so the rpms don't jump up too much, at least not if you jam the shifter into the next gear quickly enough. Rev hang is still a problem, though. Your engine will still be spinning faster than your transmission's input shaft wants to go, and you'll still cause shock loading through your clutch plate(s).

I definitely believe you, but having worked on both I can say the mechanisms DO the same thing, but ARE not exactly the same machine design and the forces are a ⅕ of in a car because the weight is so low. Much of the shock load is from momentum/inertia too because the wheels are still turning.

2 stroke dirtbikes that are older not so much as the coils are unlimited. But on 4 strokes and modern most bikes made since 1980 you can do the same thing by preloading the shift lever well in advance. As you climb up to recline you increase pressure on the shifter and once you bang limiter you pop into the next gear. Done that dragracing my xv1100 tons of times.

In a drag or a close pursuit, quick power shifting provides an extra forward thrust with each gear change, which loads and damages the clutch less than downshifting without hitting the gaz (without synchronizing the engine and the gearbox): in the first case, the clutch friction is reducing the engine rotation, in the second case it’s increasing it.

Yes power shifting is hard on the clutch and shocks the driveline, but it keeps the engine and turbo spooled up and some of that screaming engine energy also gets dumped into the driveline, further accelerating you when you dump the clutch. If you want the fastest 1/4 mile times, want the quickest acceleration or want to beat your buddy driving an identical car, then power shifting will get you there. The downside is you'll be replacing clutches and rebuilding the gearbox and driveline components far more often (but many will argue that's the price you pay for racing).

With the sticks I've had, I'd take my foot off the gas when pressing the clutch, but I wouldn't completely release the gas. I'd ease up just enough where the engine RPMs were close to matching up with the next gear. Or, giving it enough gas to rev slightly on a down shift. The general rule I followed was to try to match engine RPM to the needed RPM for the gear I was shifting to. That produced the smoothest shifts, which seemed to be the best way to extend engine and transmission life.

@DriftNick for a sequential shifter yes. A lot of high performance bikes have them from the factory too. That cuts ignition for a few milliseconds to unload the transmission and allow the shifter to change gears. That works off a pressure switch on the shifter. @@jumbo_mumbo1441That's a misleading way of saying it. What you want to do for longevity is shift up and down under as little torque load as possible. That is to say, allow the car's acceleration to cease while changing gears. It is also important not to over or under-speed the engine relative to the incoming gear, up or down. Ideally, you want to use the throttle to "match" the revs to put as little shock load on the clutch as possible. This technique is also used to prevent the car from unsettling during hard braking.
