A major added bonus for Russia is that this route will open up it's main rivers to inland navigation. Most of it's rivers flow North, towards the largely inaccessible Arctic Ocean. Throughout most of Russia's history this meant a big competitive disadvantage compared to the rest of Europe, which is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, bringing direct shipping routes from major cities to the whole world.
@danielduncan6806

We are definitely turning a new focus to the arctic. Just, we are not focusing on trade, instead we are trying to militarize it. Because we are complete idiots. After all, we are the only country on the face of the planet that is maintaining an offensive military during a time of global peace. Again, we are complete idiots.

great point. have to wonder if it will have a demographic effect similar to what Erie Canal had on midwest USA. the effect on oil prices in an era when(?) we are allegedly(?) moving away from oil use's negative side effects will be interesting. northern Russia will have huge oil, coal + mineral resources. most important in 20yrs may be drinking water. at what point will drinking water be as valuable an export commodity as oil, grains,etc are now?

The melting of ice in the north pole will give Russia such a strategic advantage that it has never seen before, and this modern-day Russian silk road is just the beginning. Especially since almost none of Russia's major cities are on the coast, compared to the huge western cities that will get absolutely destroyed by rising sea levels. Russia would most likely be the only country to benefit from all the ice in the world melting. Due to many things such as the northern regions of the world becoming the more ideal temperature for life, which Russia controls most of. This will bring so many migrants into Russia that it could finally become a global superpower. Many will say Russia will not benefit due to the war, but that's far from the truth. Pretty much every emerging economy is located in Africa, with these countries typically wanting to cut ties with their colonizers (the west). As soon to be the strongest country in the world, China depends heavily on Russia, so Russia is in the best position for the future of humanity.

@@jamesshirley7194I suppose the idea is that the ice is located in one place and when it melts it will be distributed across the planet. In fact the volume of water is less than of ice as the ice density is less than water
@kiwitrainguy

Another interesting aspect in the development of the Russian north is floating nuclear power plants. Due to the remoteness of the northern coast from the most populated and industrially developed areas, there are certain problems with electricity supply. And one of the solutions is floating nuclear power plants, which make it possible to deliver a nuclear reactor to a remote place across the sea and supply electricity to tens of thousands of people. One such reactor is already operating in the northernmost city of Russia - in Pevek.

There is no breakthrough, as a Northern traffic route still has limitation, and only a few million tones are passing through. The idea behind is to monopolize the route to Europe only, and by no means has any impact on World trade, as the only recipient of this route is China. The fact that Russia needs to spend almost a trillion USD over a few decades, and still use the arctic breakers to clear routes indicates that the Northern sea route still is technically a gamble and a large money sink. Because of the geo-politics, US/EU can sanctions any shipping companies using the route, force a reroute and by denying port entrance. That would make any investments on the entire Northern circle by Russia useless. Does the Russian government making money off the Northern route? Will be interesting to know, Russia has plans not only to create the optical cable channel the 'Polar Express', but to create a bunch of the mega-data centers in North, providing that service for the international data giants, like Google or something like it in China, including for own national ones. That can decrease the cost of usage of such data centers dramatically, since more than 50% of electricity/energy consumption in a such datacenter is used for the cooling of the huge server farms! The expensive cooling task will be much simplified in the Northern conditions, obviously... The only problem so far is to create a network of new powerplants and electric lines in the areas of Northern Russia (a huge amount of electricity still required for datacenters anyway), but I do know Russia has a lot of plans for doing that, including the mobile sea nuclear plant platforms!

The US has a gdp of about 21.4 trillion dollars. Russia has about 1.7 trillion, so not only is the US' gdp about a dozen times larger, its gdp is growing faster so the gap is only growing. The Russian goverment is predicting this project will grow gdp by 2% a year, they have a history of seriously overstimating projects like these (who doesnt in fairness?) But even if we take that at face value it changes basically nothing. As to the military - Russia cannot hope to compete with NATO and this port really doesnt change that. The US alone has about 3.4 million tons of warships. Russia can muster maybe 750,000 tons total (also the US' ships are generally more advanced). This seems like a great project for Russia but its important not to overstate its impact.

Also, the USA, as of now, is not growing faster than Russia, so the gap is shrinking (though just a little bit). The northern sea route along Russia's coats opens up every summer and has been used by less ice tolerant ships for over 100 years. This is a perfect example of the things that actually changed the course of human history. Direct pragmatic decisions taking advantage of a changing environment. The short and long-term outcomes of such a project economically environmentally and geopolitical are hard to calculate. Because such large projects generate so much data noise that nuances are easily lost and it's the subtle details of such a project that can accumulate to decide its ultimate success or failure. The question we should all be asking ourselves is not how this affects the status quo but how it affects the world and its people and what if anything we can or should do about it.

The economic growth of western Europe is slow and Russia has potential. Not only that but faster shipping from east Asia through the north sea will be beneficial for the rest of Europe as well.
