As of 2020 Tesla has logged over 3 billion miles of autonomous vehicle driving. That’s over 120,000 laps around your momma. Like it or not, we can all agree that autonomous vehicles are the way of the future. Tesla, Cadillac, BMW, they're just a few companies that have cars on the market with autonomous features. But each of them tackle this "autonomous driving" problem in a different way using different technology. So how do they do it, how does it really work, and more importantly, is a computer in a car truly as responsive as the human brain? Well today we are gonna find out. Skynet is here.

I feel like the best answer is still a combination of everything. Ultrasonic sensors around the entire vehicle, cameras in all the same positions, radar in the front to detect vehicles in front, including the vehicles in front of whats in front of you, but also a LIDAR system in with the cameras in the top center that can help with rapid threat detection and identification, or even put the LIDAR and RADAR systems where the typical grill would be on an internal combustion vehicle.

To all those who think sensor-based driving is 'better' and/or 'safer' than a human driver.... A while back there was an incident in a bike race. The car that was pacing/filming the race, and hence had the peloton draughting behind it, had the CEO of one of the main sponsors on board, who insisted on bringing his kid for the experience. The car was one with 'emergency assist' that is supposed to help prevent collisions by sensing danger and immediately applying a countermeasure - for example slamming on the anchors if an object (presumably a car or person) suddenly appears in front of it. All seemed fine - until the kid started waving flags out of the sunroof. The sensors on the roof saw the flag, and interpreted it as an obstacle right in front, hence it slammed on. As a result, the peloton smashed into the pace car, and several of them broke bones. The passengers in the car (including the kid) all suffered neck injuries.

You were basically spot-on with the "it didn't know what the semi was" thing. I doubt Tesla engineers had trained the model to recognize an overturned semi truck. This is why it would probably be helpful for them to be smart and instead of using a huge 3D LiDAR system like other manufacturers, just replacing the radar with a unidirectional 2D LiDAR sensor, similar to what newer Roombas use. Then it could've seen that there was a large stationary object directly in front of the car and braked, without having an ugly thing on top of the car.
@oldrrocr

I like that the driver of the truck is just standing in the highway, doesn't wave down the Tesla, but that the Tesla doesn't hit the brakes until it PASSES the pedestrian in the lane... but now my Tesla hits the brakes hard anytime it detects an oncoming car in ANOTHER lane. brilliant!

@0Freguenedy0
@0Freguenedy0 3 роки тому
@@calimio6 above human level driving? Don't think that's their goal, maybe their marketing. A person would have seen that truck easily,for example. The problem is that humans make mistakes or lose attention. Cars still can't drive as a person and probably never will. What they actually want is for it to be safe and predictable, a self driving car won't win a race against a race driver or avoid some specific accidents a human would, humans will still be better than self-driving. Again, the problem comes that statistically humans fail and some are idiots.

My guess is that the truck was empty or hauling something light (maybe boxes of snack-chips, for example). If my guess is right, then the Tesla crashed into an aluminum-walled air[box]. Also, notice the smoke from the brakes about 200 ft before impact (basically right when it passes the driver by the shoulder). … The Tesla was computing, "Oh, sh___, OH sh___, OH SH___! STOP! 😱" I'm not surprised the guy wasn't harmed, in my opinion. [Edit]: word-swapped "semi" for "truck"... smaller than a semi, just a regular box-truck.

Elon has also talked - bragged, really - about how involved he is with designing tesla products, and this is backed up by numerous accounts from employees, ex-employees and leakers about his micromanaging style, it's well known that if he says no, it doesn't go. Tesla wouldn't drive into wall, it has front facing radar. As for Elon and Tesla Engineers, it was Mobileye (Intel) that created the FSD camera concept. As for LIDAR, it has a lot of limitations and is really only used on premapped high resolution roads. Lidar system don't really think for themselves and since most conditions are constantly changing, LIDAR has a hard time adapting. One of the other big issues about using Lidar, is power consumption. Lidar maybe good for ICE Cars, but they would eat a lot of range in BEVs. One of the biggest issues, is costs. Lidar costs about 10 -20k, cameras about $50-100, Lidar doesn't work so well in rain, fog and etc, but Costs is the biggest factor. Getting back to the Accident in this video, Tesla has all the data and but is prevented from releasing, unless the Owner gives the OK. Maybe the Driver doesn't want it released as long to hide his mistake, but the truth is well known....it's just a matter of time before we all find out. So far in most of these cases, it has been driver error that was at fault. The Truck was overturned in the lane for a long time before the car hit it.

My theory after seeing this video: That looks like a box truck to me, and it looks like the way it was situated in the lanes placed what would normally be the back top edge of the "box" right in the middle of the Tesla's lane. This edge was oriented so that the top surface of the box and the rear (door) of the box oriented at about 45 degrees relative to the direction of the Tesla's travel. This effectively looks like a wedge from the point of view of the Tesla. The radar signal from the Tesla was then hitting those angles surfaces and being reflected nearly perpendicular to the direction of travel. These reflections were then not of high enough signal level for the Tesla to interpret them as an obstacle. In reality, the angles probably not exactly 45 degrees. It might be more like 30 and 60 degrees, but this still could have reduced the signal levels of the radar reflections.

I have a friend who works at Tesla’s Autopilot division. He won a raffle one day that allowed him to take a model 3 home for the day and return it the next. He and I went for a joyride to see the autopilot in action. We came to a roundabout marked at a 30mph speed limit. The model 3 whipped us around the tight roundabout at exactly 30mph and my buddy took control back from the autopilot milliseconds before it sent us out of the road and on to the sidewalk. 😂 impressive traction from the car but holy moly, that, combined with other questionable decisions from the autopilot that night caused me to always avoid teslas on the road cause you never know if they’re on autopilot or not lol

A couple more helpful pieces of information. The radar safety systems with integrated Camara detection and can read signs etc... currently exist on semi trucks and are only good out to 100 meters. You can see the brake's on this car engaged 100 meters out very clearly. And as good as those are, the manufacturer explicitly says that they are not a replacement for driver's. At highway speeds a semi truck takes a thousand feet at least to come to a safe stop when a collision cannot be avoided (so remember that the next time you cut in front of one)... Which is why professional driver's are trained to look a mile a head of their vehicle as well as what's happening directly in front of them. Complacency kills. Interesting fact number two... The self driving car and semi trucks make up less than 1% of the cars on the road. And yet as a semi truck driver... I see them way more than one percent of my day. Crashing 1 percent of the time does not equate to being safer in that case. It just means they don't have the numbers to be an internet rabbit hole of carnage... Yet. On a positive note... The existing radar systems absolutely do work better than the human eye alone in weather conditions like dense fog... But in reality, throw in rain, snow, bugs, ice, or anything that can build up on the system, and they throw a warning light letting you know you're on your own. Autonomous and semi autonomous system's have their place, but the highway isn't one of them. Human beings shouldn't even be able to operate vehicles at those high rate of speeds, but we can, and depending on your skill level, very well, all the way down to my car driver's it self and I'm better than you because it's electric, even though the battery was charging off the same fossil fuel grid that yours gets fuel injection from. The main reason these systems will not be adopted in mass is the same reason Sully Sulenberger has a movie. Other people's arrogant confidence in these safety systems has no basis in reality. Mainly because most people aren't qualified to be professional driver's or pilots. You can be mad if you want to be... All I'm gonna say is buy low and sell high. Remember what happened to airline stock on 9/11. Oh yeah... I went there. You're welcome. 🥸

So the real question is, what was wrong with the software that it failed to stop or divert around the large fixed unmovable object? This should be an easy test-case for self-drive systems, that should be fixable with a software update.

Something to note: LiDAR has a crucial weakness in that on really hot days the road can heat up the air enough to make it refract light. This can then fool the LiDAR sensor, causing unwanted reactions (or lack of wanted reactions). In addition, the same thing can happen with water puddles and other reflective surfaces. You can see how that could be a problem. Elon Musk is correct in that a car relying solely on LiDAR is doomed. However, it is an extra tool in the bag and can help decide when one sensor is feeding the computer bad data.

I apologize if this point has already been made. Firstly, autopilot is not an autonomous mode. It is the equivalent (slightly more capable) of what many cars have since 2019…ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control). If the driver was using Autopilot, it would not be expected to take any evasive action besides braking. And even then, not likely. I have personally tested three different ACC’s. They all fail to respond to heading straight on into a stationary object for some reason. But the are excellent at detecting what seems to a maximum delta V of around 25mph over a period of time greater than a couple of seconds. Or at least some algorithm similar to that in concept. This is probably related to the explanation touched on at 11:00 in the video. But the answer to the question at 11:35 in the video is Autopilot doesn’t do that.

It’s possible that the radar did not pick up the truck for the same reason that the F117 was not picked up by radar. The truck had its flat top pointed toward and angled away from the radar transmitter. This would have bounced the radar waves away from the receiver and thus radar would not pick up the truck and similarly the back of the truck would also divert the radar waves away from the receiver. LIDAR may similarly be reflected away from the receivers. It does seem that one system does pick up the truck ( probably the cameras) but recognised the situation too late to stop as you do see the brakes lock up and skid briefly before the anti-skid braking system took over. Whether automatically or driver initiated, some system did try stopping the car about 20 m from the truck.

Linux primary rely on keyboard press timings, mouse movement, and some controller timings (like IDE/SATA etc.) and those results are often given beyond practical accuracy. The primary diffrence in case of Tesla AI and human brain is that AI is trained for just specific situation and nothing more. Eg. Imagine you have a sheets of papers with handwritten numbers 0-9. And you teach AI to recognize those numbers. It will work great. Problem comes the moment someone comes and writes "A". Then someone else comes and writes chinese character. AI will forcefully try to choose a number from 0-9 while human reading it will say "hold on something is wrong". The Tesla AI did see object in front but couldn't properly notice something is wrong and didn't try to slow down like human would. Current neural networks etc. lack giant unsolved quality that people do posses - abstract thinking.

I'd be curious to see your point of view now here in late 2022 after their FSD Beta progress and complete deletion of radar in favor of deep learning computer vision. Regarding that accident though, yeah I'd love to see what error prevented the detection. Pretty much every vehicle manual out there with any driver assistance warns the driver to stay alert because none of those systems behave right with stationary objects on roads. Ultimately, it was the drivers responsibility to jump off the bell curve and actually pay attention to the road. Any alert human would have been able to react to this lol.

Musk wants these cars to be fully autonomous. Let’s not start the conversation of “oh why didn’t the driver do this or that”. Remember Tesla is charging for full self driving in their vehicles. That’s unacceptable to advertise and sell as a feature if it’s not ready.

@@hairstonjr_5337 you do know that even if self driving is 100% capable and doable , it would still fall under the drivers liability right? We aren’t talking about fault here. I did some research on this previously after I had seen it on another youtube channel. The theory that makes sense to me is that the cameras confused the white roof of the overturned trailer with the white of the sky behind it. There have not been a lot of deaths with Teslas in autopilot mode, but the very first one in 2016 (Joshua Brown) was a similar case. A white semi truck was making a turn right in front of a Tesla model S. The Tesla did not see this white trailer possibly because again it was confusing the large white surface on the horizon with the sky and it drove right under the trailer, shearing off the roof and killing the driver. This happened again in 2019 with a model 3. The Tesla drove under a white trailer and decapitated the driver. In all of these cases the drivers obviously had become too comfortable with their Tesla's in autopilot mode, I mean who would blame them....it had worked for hours and hours of driving before. Complacency and inexperience takes lives everyday on our highways. Everyday I see people tailgating each other on the freeway, never expecting a car up front needing to come to an emergency stop and bam...you get a 5 car pile up.
