This event took place at the British Library on Monday 20 November 2023.
One of the leading fantasy writers of our time talks to Roz Kaveney.
Neil Gaiman is the New York Times bestselling and award-winning author and creator of books, graphic novels, short stories, film and television for all ages, including Norse Mythology, Neverwhere, Coraline, The Graveyard Book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and The View from the Cheap Seats. His fiction has received Newbery, Carnegie, Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, and Will Eisner Awards. American Gods, based on the 2001 novel, is now a critically acclaimed, Emmy-nominated TV series, and he was the writer and showrunner for the mini-series adaptation of Good Omens, based on the book he co-authored with Sir Terry Pratchett. Gaiman was an Executive Producer and co-showrunner for Netflix’s TV adaptation of his Sandman comic book series, and he is developing the TV adaptation of his novel Anansi Boys. In 2017 Gaiman became a Global Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Originally from England, he lives in the United States, where he is a Professor in the Arts at Bard College.
Roz Kaveney is a poet and novelist living in London. She is perhaps best known for books on popular culture including Reading the Vampire, her verse translation of the poems of Catullus and her Lambda-winning trans novel Tiny Pieces of Skull. She recently finished a five volume fantasy novel Rhapsody of Blood.

Neil Gaiman, man, what an inspiration. I remember reading the first volume of the Sandman and being floored by its brilliance. Still my all-time favorite stories. Then, I started branching out. I read Coraline, Good Omens, American Gods. I'm reading his anthology books now. I used to see how many books a certain author had put out and got overwhelmed. Neil was the first author that, upon seeing his long list of works, made me excited that I get to read these stories for the first time. Genuinely one of the greats and my all-time favorite author!

I would genuinely love to know how he manages writing a text long hand with ink pen on paper and a journal and how he manages notes while he writes, said manuscript. is there a separate smaller journal for those types of things? Or how does he keep track of ideas for additional works?

In the margins. I do it the same way. You can control how much you put on a page after all.

I'm curious: what was John M Fords response to 9-11? Google is letting me down with this one...

I really enjoy Neil Gaiman's books. But I've started coming across opinions that he's overrated? I have such an emotional connection to his work, that I can't totally understand the negative perspectives?

I doubt there’s any artist about whom you can’t find similar “opinions”. It’s usually just some people’s way of feeling cooler than the cool people.

@@adityagautam2581 No, very true. Or, this thing is different to what I'm usually interested in. I think Neil Gaiman is a very talented writer, irrespective of if I enjoy his work, or not. I'm in the enjoy camp!
