Meanwhile the implications of the cartoon are actually more intense, because Gyatso died in a room full of DEAD firenation soldiers. Let's just think about that for a bit and remember that usually, if you win a battle, you bury your dead back home. Those dudes were abandoned to die in what I am only assuming, was the largest pure vacuum Gyatso could make. No air in their lungs, no air to burn, struggling to overpower an old man physically while he choked them all out, including himself. Sozen looked sick as hell in that live action, but I'll take the subtle haunting question of the source material over that hands down.
@thylionheart
@thylionheart 2 місяці тому
It honestly made me so uncomfortable because it felt like they were taking morbid enjoyment in showing a genocide. Like it was them patting themselves on the back for being so gritty and dark. I especially hated watching Gyatso die defending children because that means that he died failing to save the lives of the air nomad children. They would’ve been slaughtered right after. I get that “that’s realistic!” or “it’s showing the horrors of war!” but it just felt like an ego-stroking edgelord decision and one I am personally not a fan of. I don’t need to see the tragedy to feel its impact. I think it works better to have Aang wake up 100 years later with no knowledge of the actual day’s events and to just see the remnants and feel that emptiness and loss. To him, only a few days had passed, and everything changed.
@Gustoberg
@Gustoberg 2 місяці тому
And I think the way monk gyatso is tells he probably defeated the fire nation soldiers, but died of his wounds, wich, to me, makes it so much more tragic, they didn't even burn him to death, he just sat down waiting ti die, knowing the others fled or died

@@theechidna2916I'm not a fan of LOTR but even I know that those movies are incredibly well made and are detailed and impactful and have changed and inspired many things about fantasy. Avatar the original show did the same, the original source material is a work of love and passion, of course there's flaws in both but the quality of the experience 100% makes up for any small flaws. The fact that those LOTR movies and the original Avatar series are so well received and loved even today is just a testament to how good they really are. The Live Action Avatar series on the other hand is wrong in almost every regard, it can't even really be compared to the original because it's a completely different thing, same as the movie although nowhere near as awful. The Live Action series unlike the LOTR and original Avatar series, will not be fondly remembered for almost Two decades after its showcase on screen and will either only be remembered for how badly it did or will be forgotten in under a Year.

One thing you didn't mention that literally made my jaw drop when I was watching the Netflix show was that Aang just says he wants to go on a little flight to clear his head, vs the original where Aang is so afraid of being the Avatar that he decides to run away. @randomthoughts0829

It also removes a big part of the main characters agency. Instead of Aang CHOOSING to run off and suffer the consequences, it makes the whole thing just feel like happenstance. Aang can't be at fault if he just wanted to clear his head. Even if his agency showed him to be selfish...that's a good thing! That's a complex character! It shows that aang understood that responsibility and was SCARED. Which makes it all the more satisfying when he does accept himself!

I also don’t fully understand why people are mad at Aang for disappearing…i feel like it would have seemed like the Avatar got killed along with the other airbenders. Tbh i am not a fan of recreating masterpieces. I would be much more of a fan if this was just a continuation or an adaptation of kyoshi novels for example. The second would be better. Because tbh the ending in atla was kind of disappointing and rushed, and any continuation wouldn't worth it to be made. And yes i am gonna say something controversial, but metalbending makes the show unbalanced from that point after, because it makes the non benders irrelevant and the earthbenders very OP. In atla non benders with some ingenuity and weapons could deal with most benders, but in korra for example everyone except earthbenders is weak in comparison. The comics are kinda dumb and somewhat off character. The only character the comics really developed well was ozai. So in conclusion whatever they are to make it better be something out of some book or some modification of the comics since the original stands very well on it's own. Except the ending.

While generally no remake is as good as its source, you also can't expect a 1:1 copy. Sure, some things were weird and different, but overall the Netflix series has fans that it deserves. Some people like LA Iroh but tbh I just couldn’t connect with him. Maybe it was the writing of the dialogue, but it felt so stiff to me. He didn’t feel like Iroh to me. I missed Iroh’s jolliness, his levity. That was part of what made him so complex in the cartoon. He used to be a bad man, a general who fought and killed in the name of the Fire Nation’s colonization. But now he’s a jolly, wise, enlightened soul who loved his nephew as his own and is playing the long game to not only guide and support his nephew’s redemption, but contribute to saving the world and restoring balance and redeeming himself, too. There was also a moment I disliked in episode 1 where Zuko is training and Iroh praises him, when the equivalent in the cartoon is Zuko being too volatile and angry and Iroh giving him a teachable moment about how fire comes from the breath, not the muscle/power, and tells him to run the drill again. It’s a moment that shows Zuko’s hot-headedness and Iroh’s wise, firm instruction very well, but the LA completely upturns it and just….doesn’t understand.

I've seen a lot of people praise the scene of his son's funeral. But I think they rushed to show it too soon. In the og the the leaves of the vine scene hits too hard because Iroh is presented as this silly, wise, kindhearted yet powerful old man that serves as a guide to the mc's. He stands out from all the cold-heart fire nation soldiers. So when that scene plays out you see one of the sweetest chatacters in tv crying while also understanding he went through a lot to be the kind hearted man he is.

Yeah, the first episode should’ve been the second one to give time to breathe and have some form of mystery about who this boy is and what happened according to AANG and not the plot. It would’ve been better to start with Sokka’s and Katara’s family in the southern tribe and their daily life, let Katara be herself and argue with Sokka from time to time then him goofing off not taking her seriously because he is a «warrior ». AND then they go fishing because food is lacking in the village because without enough men, they go through periods of famine. THEN Sokka pisses Katara off one more time and she gets off on him about her responsibilities since their parents are gone and she hates his disrespect. That breaks the iceberg. But it’s AANG who takes time to retell how he learned that he was the Avatar and don’t know where he is and wants to go back home. That’s when Katara tells him that there’s no «home » and she’s deeply sorry and maybe they have an emotional moment together. While we the spectators get through some of episode 1 moments with Gyatso and the fire Nation attack. They mixed up things in such a weird way that I would say 90% of the scenes where Aang talks about being the Avatar and his duty should’ve been deleted. Maybe replace them with Zuko search of the Avatar from the moment he was banished and how anger built up into him to the point of being a villain. But no, they did this mess.

The worst change by far is the absolute character assassination that has taken place against Katara. When I showed my friend the original show for the first time earlier this year, they remarked that a lot of people would call the show woke garbage if it came out today because of how Katara is written. This is, of course, because she's very opinionated and strong on her own and is prone to blow up on people and has snark to her. That's what makes her interesting and likable. How is she portrayed in the live action show? Let me use the most telling example: how she handles Pakku. In the live action, she goes to argue with Pakku and gives up pretty easily and looks defeated. She then complains to Aang, who actually weirdly takes Pakku's side. After this she goes to Sokka, a MAN, who has to tell her to go fight Pakku. In the original show, she constantly argues against it. When it gets too far, she decides herself to go fight Pakku, AGAINST the advice of the men in the group. She talks shit and then fights him and it's badass because we see her get mistreated and she chooses to fight for herself. The showrunners made a big deal about removing the Sokka sexism arc, but honestly the show is MORE misogynistic. Katara's character is no longer strong and fun and likeable, she is a character that is now written blandly in an effort to not piss off the type of men who get mad when fictional women are too outspoken.

I absolutely agree and have said this. By avoiding Sokka’s sexism, the show itself just is extremely sexist. Katara is reduced to a passive woman that needs the confirmation, opinions, and guidance of her male counterparts. In the Netflix version, Aang teaches her water bending, when that is the complete opposite of the OG show. In the OG one, Katara asks Aang for help, but he admits he knows nothing about it. Then they learn together, but with Katara being more passionate about water bending, she then teaches Aang. The fact that they made her a total pleb in the live action is heart breaking and a horrible shame to such a powerful female character.

Wrong. We don't hate strong female characters, we hate bad strong female characters. That is a big difference. In the original Katara was strong and talented, but she was flawed and that is was made her a good character. Even though she was talented we still saw her struggle with bending due to her anger problems and impatiance. In Netflix adaptation however we only stratch the surface of Katara's complexity. 2 years ago House of Dragons came out and there are strong and complex female characters, but I didn't saw any complains. The netflix show had good effects and everything but it was still leagues below the animation sequences. You have so much more freedom in stylization of how the elements can look and move and how the benders can move. You can have more interesting exaggerated poses. They are trying to appease an audience that refuses to watch animation. pretentious people that measure their maturity by insulting animation as a childish medium. They probably believe Ghibli films can be ‘improved’ upon by having a live action treatment. Some things work BECAUSE of animation. Suspension of disbelief, physical humour, fantasy and surrealism lends itself to animation. I would be forever more charmed by Peter rabbit in 2d animation vs anyone animating a real rabbits lips to move or giving me a James cordon cg bunny. Will I be more impressed by spirited away if instead of an animated dragon or giant baby I get to see them rendered in cgi? Like…no. The animation and closely referenced to real life martial arts combines with the bending was so beautifully mastered in the cartoon with atla. Sifu kisu even mentioned some of the movements were just too difficult at times so in certain key frames one person would hold up another to get it. It is heightened reality.
@pianist150
@pianist150 2 місяці тому
@@surette2012Didn't know that about Sifu Kisu but it makes perfect sense. They use the medium to stretch reality to a point where gravity and physics still exist but these people are clearly doing things people can't do. And that allows them to get so imaginative and really push the fights to be so dynamic. And then even if you get the best martial artists on earth to do it in live action it'd look cool sure but then the elements are a factor too. I was just rewatching the Zuko v Azula agni kai and the way the fire moves, and crashes and billows and evaporates and glows is so beautiful to watch. In live action, firstly idk that you'd have the exact same granular control that you have in 2D animation and also that is not how fire looks or moves. I know what fire looks like, what it does, you couldn't make it look that artistic and gorgeous in live action because it still has to look like it belongs in the real world. I think there's just no way around it, live action is a lesser medium for element bending
@surette2012
@surette2012 2 місяці тому
@@pianist150 I agree. The transition to live action means you are asking the audience to stretch their belief to the max. You are now challenging them to believe what is real life fire vs sfx fire. With animation we give more artistic licence. In animation we believe we are seeing a kid flying and bending, with live action our brains know we are seeing a kid on a wire or a cgi person. Not to say live action and fantasy can’t join to make great content. Like with Hook: I know Robin William’s isn’t flying or it’s green screen, but I’m not a stick in the mud and as long as emotional beats and storytelling is strong and immersive I’m here for the ride. Anyway, I’m so amazed with sifu kisu that I’m convinced he could do all those crazy moves. to be fair, he suffered from injuries at times and they couldn’t always get him to do some crazy poses and movements. He would hold up Bryan and it’s rather funny to see those frames. I believe in the opening for Korra the last pose of aang air bending was a bit of a stretch so he just held Bryan so he could balance to do it. Bending involves people being pushed up by energy and elements and leaping 30 feet in the air so of course the reality is heightened and sadly our reality won’t let us recreate that without help.

They honestly could make it better than what they've shown but they're so stuck at making it as realistic as possible when they could just make it more magical. Make it have shape, make it move less like realistic water, and make it move like a thicker water or any other viscous liquid then make it realistic when it actually hits something. Even make it glow a little or have a different shift in color when it's being bended. They opted for realistic water with realistic textures. They could make other types of bending cooler but they opted for martial arts with a little bit of bending here and there. They can't even combine the two when essentially bending is martial arts with "magic"

It's more than that. There's a myth going around that they're about the same length but this isn't taking into account that every episode of atla og had less than 30 seconds of credits in total across 20 episodes in the season, making for about 10 minutes of credits. The Netflix shows has an insane 6 or so minutes of credits per episode, creating a total of 48 minutes of credits. That's 38 less minutes added into it, plus the 20 you mentioned to make 58 and it's practically an entire hour less. The Netflix show should have been 13 episodes.

I hated it, honestly. Its not like you have to adapt frame by frame in order to be good BUT the essential themes/arcs of the OG must be maintained and yet they couldn't even do that. Just imagine how incredible it would've been if Netflix's huge budget was used to re-animate a 2004 cartoon with 2024 technology (like Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai levels! -or even build up on Korra's) and it would be much easier to perfect it even more. But no, it had to be live freaking action... PS: I will be sending this video to every single person i was blasting with a text version of the comparison between the first episodes lol. Like fr the changes are in vital points, they even cut Aang replaying to Zuko "and you are just a teenager". Anyway, thanks Nick.

A shot for shot, line for line adaptation seems pretty pointless to me since it would just be a slightly worse looking product due to the limits of reality. In general I would say avatar didn't need any kind of adaptation of the main story whatsoever I mean in terms of problems the show has what? A few bad episodes and that one turtle plot point at the end? Does that warrant a new show? There are a few more scenes with azula? Does that really need a new show rather than some tie in comic or the such?

There were just so many baffling choices made in the Netflix Series. Why introduce Azula and her gang when we already have enough villians to follow with both Zuko and Zhao? Why essentially swap Zuko and Azula's backstory and make Azula the underdog? Why cut out almost all of the group bonding between the main group? It makes every interaction where their friendship comes up feel incredibly forced. Why make Zhao a bumbling moron when he would've been a perfectly serviceable villian if you just left his character alone? Why change the way the airbenders were killed? Is it really so unbelievable for the biggest military power at the time to execute a four pronged attack? Why combine the Omashu, Jet, and Northern Air Temple stories? They don't mesh well together at all. Why make Bumi a spiteful dick? Why make Katara a master waterbender from the beginning? It was the driving force for a lot of character development in the original and removing it makes her character the blandest in the show by far. The "I see you've found a master," moment between Katara and Zuko just doesn't work since Katara has just always been that good. Why gut the Hei Bai arc and add all the random nonsense about the Face Stealer. Why change the backstory of the moon and ocean spirits so that they never gave up their imortality to live on earth. Why make it so that Aang can only use his spirit powers at specific shrines? If you liked the adaptation, good for you. It's at least better than the movie. But it is an inferior product to the cartoon in almost every way. No wonder the original creators left the project.

Showing the attack on the Air Nomads was a big mistake in my opinion. In the original there is the mid season reveal of Sozin's Comet. Then the rest of the series the audience is left to wonder just HOW powerful fire benders are under the comet. The live action reveals the answer before the audience even knows it's a question, and the answer is like 50% stronger than regular fire bending lmao
@niloticnya

@sybilasteri5758 2 місяці тому
Also, the live action's potrayal of Sozin's Comet is...underwhelming, in a way? It's not the same kind of terrifying power with Ozai scorching entire fields worth of land in seconds. Without the previous context of how strong firebending usually is, the live action just makes the airbenders feel weak. But nooo... we had to have a 'cool' action scene of a genocide happening.
@mekannatarry1929
@mekannatarry1929 2 місяці тому
I'd say there was no difference; in the finale regular infantry's basic attacks were explosions and high pressure flamethrowers, then you had Ozai who could torch a cul-de-sac with one move. Not seeing the airbender genocide, then watching Ozai's opening strike during the comet, and putting two and two together, along with the haunting music really tells you all you need to know about the horror of what went down. Show, don't tell. And they did it while never showing what happened.
@mrtz46

I watched Avatar during covid, and despite knowing it was a kids' show and never watching it while it was airing, it still left a big impact on me. You mentioned One Piece and its live-action adaptation, which is kind of interesting. One of One Piece's, and Oda's biggest strengths when it comes to his storytelling and character development is his mastery over "show, don't tell", which seemed to transition over to the live-action somewhat; they show character development with their actions and expressions, just like the original series (albeit there's less time for character development since there's only 8 episodes and limited time). Yet with Avatar, they couldn't, or more likely didn't want to do that, despite the fact that Netflix already showed that they CAN do it.

This show felt like someone watched all of those "movie clips" on UKposts and tried to recreate the story based on those 2 minut slices without context. The most obvious sign of this was the moment when Katara fought Zuko in the Northern Water Tribe. Zuko says: "You've found a Master". In the original it made sense, it was after Katara trained with Paku after his change of heart. (A good arc, with a good message btw) In the Netflix version, Paku never agreed to teach her. She just mysteriously gained all of those skills. They've changed most of those great lessons. They're been given a perfect "women power" story, with Katara/Paku and Sokka/Suki, but they went with a modern dumb "all women show up with dramatic music". Even though it had no sense in the context they created. Those women had no fighting experience, but apparently they can now fight...

The way the show is shot really puts the viewer at a distance. Everything is framed with a long focal lens and a blurry background (hiding the flatness of the volume studio used on set). So every character has a close up every 5 seconds but it feels like we're watching them from afar, with binoculars. It's so rare to see a shot where they are all in frame and in focus that they never feel like a group, even less a family. It looks like someone watched a few youtube videos on how to make a shot look cinematic but never learned a single thing about composition or editing.

It's a flawless, gut-wrenching bit of environmental storytelling that pretty obviously spells out what occurred there to anyone who spent just a little bit thinking about it. Gyatso is well and truly gone, Aang doesn't even have time to have these corny flashbacks thinking about him as he pretty much immediately breaks down. The writing is attrocious, there's sooo much exposition and everything feels souless and devoid of life. The show literally shows you a genocide but it's more concerned about making it look cool with lots of action, and it just feels so meaningless. You wanted to portray that scene so badly and for what? Cool airbenders fighting with cool fire benders? And the end of the first episode too, it was just "we gotta show this cool scene where aang gets angry!" while removing all the emotional weight of such scene. I swear to god, it feels like something a highschooler would write.

Literally somebody came for me for nitpicking and being ‘not objective’ because nostalgia apparently causes people to not be fair in reviewing new adaptions. On its own it’s still uninspiring. If someone never watched the og the takeaway isn’t ‘omg best show ever!’ (Unless they are a tween making an edit of jet on TikTok) If anything they were impressed with the world because it’s novel to them and that’s where the admiration ended. The writing, reveals, chronological order, exposition, erasure of natural reveals, mystique and characters make for a dry and out of it experience. It doesn’t hold us in suspense, it basically outlined everything that would happen. It’s really condescending for people to think we should blindly like something and if not we’re incapable of fun or accepting new things. I was even playing devil’s advocate for this new show, i latched onto the things I liked to remain hopeful. I like zuko’s actor I liked the small additions to the 41st division, I liked the effects and omashu looked good, the critters looked good. I even defended azula’s characterization. I agree she shouldn’t be shown in s1, but her sycophantic and unstable need for perfection and daddy’s loyalty and love is within bounds of her character. Their BIG mistake is again, the chronological choice to reveal all that in s1 and destroying her charisma, presence and aura that she had in her s2 introduction. The show is not high on the rewatch list, though. I hate how media literacy is now and attention spans, it seems they curated a show to avoid bad faith interpretations so they kept it dry and safe and stripped characters down.

I think the problem is that people always think there's stuff they need to take away or replace from the original, when in all honesty, I don't think there is. It's all 100% necessary, the only thing that can be done is to build on what's there, and even then if you don't adhere to the laws of the universe and characters it gets messy. Unfortunately even things like great divide, because it shows aang doing something completely contrary to all our previous conceptions about him (not to mention one of the only times he draws on being over 100 years old in any meaningful way + an early expression of doing his duty as avatar), sokka and katara having a serious feud after being stuck in the south pole with not a lot of outside cultures for most of their lives, and characterization for both (showing some of Katara's tendency to be hypocritical and holier than thou, Sokka's tendency to throw his beloved logic out the window and be careless when it suits his opinion). which sidenote because I'm about to RANT, the 'adding too much of the wrong thing' is what I don't like about Legend of Korra, and why just the two original show RUNNERS were not the only thing that made ATLA so amazing. It took these incredible characters and settings with very defined relationships that we adored and just said "Okay so the world is totally different and everyone can do things that only the literal best around could do like less than 60 years ago, all these characters grew up to be mostly bad people and parents, most of them are dead or we've changed them entirely, and instead you get all these new guys with no chemistry, a whiny girlboss mc, 5 storylines with only slightly different neonazis depicting this cool thing everyone loves the world for as holding the world back, nothing has permanent consequence, and also the devil is here and he's a living flag.
