Building Our POST And BEAM Roof

2 роки томуThe 16' tall posts for our front deck were extremely bowed when we installed them which means in order for us to move on and install the beams for the roof we will first need to straighten out the posts. We work to pull the posts in and install each of the beams for the deck roof while battling 100+ degree humid weather and vicious summer lightning storms.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.

There is a TV show in the UK called Grand Designs that is one hour long per episode and shows unusual houses that take about 3 years average with a full compliment of tradesmen working on them. You blow every single episode out of the water from 14 years of that show. This is magnificent work.

I love that show also, but these guys are certainly more interesting... Granted, if we got to follow a twice a week episode of Grand Designs that was focused on some of their projects, it would probably be interesting too! :)

I can't stand grand designs as its usually smug middle class wankers that try to get the job done dirt cheap by employing Muppets, and you think this is better? They shit themselves every lightening storm but live in a timber house with no discernable lightening conductor system, dodgy at best.

For an electrician and school teacher, you guys are darn good carpenters! Some say it's over kill on these decks, but look at the storms and it is a forever home, so I say it's not only strong but an attractive deck with every post and piece of hardware you choose to use. Just amazing work, Teacher and Electrician!!!

great job and then the work continues . I grew up on an organic farm that my parents bought when i was 9 and canning was a priority . We sold fresh veggies to all the neighbors since our farm was 7 acres . My dad and I worked it with only rototillers and wheelbarrows . My mom had a heart attack right after we bought the farm . I hope you both are as successful as my hubby and I . 48 years married now retired to VA from the great garden state NJ . I am still building things 2 decks 3 pergolas and a 100 foot long covered front porch 1 guest house and finally after dirt and a house from 2004 it is our home . good luck and a great long healthy life for both of you and your family I love your home

I love that everyone (most everyone.. there were a small fraction that were rude but loved that you responded to them) Loved that everyone loves you as much as I do !! I’ve been watching from the beginning. Josh is a master electrician, but his brain is so much more. Normal people don’t understand what he does. I don’t think anybody else could do this build unless his brain could figure it out. He has a high mathematical intelligence and that is the key to their success as well as Erin’s wonderful ability to work and help him. Of course they have a common goal, but I am blown away at his intelligence. I have no doubt they will succeed at any of their endeavors. Look forward to seeing the rest of the build.

Josh, you continue to amaze me. The way you fitted in those posts - superb! And to think that when y'all started your build, you and Erin were pretty much novices at home construction. Yes, Josh, you had your electrician background, but that's still a far cry from building all that you two have built with this project. You have come a long, long ways!

The moon flowers (angels trumpets) were pretty. The black brackets are sweet looking especially with nut and screw making it look like carriage bolts, very nice look.

We had to hang some 85lbs artworks to hang 28 feet up in a bank. We were on a scaffold like yourself. I sympathize with you guys. It rocked but we got them up. Both of us were scared, but know one shared that up high. Those at the floor level were told to be quiet. I was absent my usual humor….

simply remeber most wasps and its kin the hornets will eat any thing where bees wont. its why wasp venom is not the same as bee venom. also bee venom is defensive, where as wasp can use it to kill pray.

the t-brackets are enough, but I would drill a 1" hole in the center down into the post and put in a dowel at each join.

Little worried myself about that cross beam that’s gonna be supporting that ridge beam, not sure those L brackets will hold all that weight, other than that, very nice craftsmanship, and looks awesome!

@@jasonteems7157 - I agree the L bracket is not enough, but most likely Josh will install diagonal supports on both sides of that cross beam to the main horizontal beams that are supporting the roof.

Scared the bejesus out of me so much that I might have soiled my tidy-whities! When Josh was spraying the bug spray you brought up an important point. “We are an hour away from medical help..”. In one of your previous videos you were advertising medical packs. Medical packs are only valuable if someone has the training to use them. Your kids are always bebopping around on their toys, and you can always be stung, also your attention to safety isn’t always a priority. You may want to consider taking an advanced course through Wilderness Medical Associates. The course deals with serious injuries and anaphylactic shocks. Keep some Benadryl handy and by being current with WMA, you might even be able to keep epinephrine on hand.

If she is known to be allergic to Bee stings she is likely an Epipen or two on hand already. First aid training is a good idea if they don't already have it. Since Josh is and electrician he has likely already had training, for me as a union electrician it was reqiured.

Also, make sure the boys have some form of communication on or with them when they go on their 4-wheeler excursions. For just in case. Better safe(r) than sorry.

@@dubious6718 probably still looking at over an hour to get one deployed, and very expensive. Anaphylactic shock comes on in minutes but with Benadryl and epinephrine injection would buy the time needed to get to a hospital. Falling off a ladder, or an atv crash would still require some sort of first responder care to stabilize the injured before a chopper can get there.

When describing this video, the only word that comes to mind is "exquisite." Seems like an odd adjective to describe a couple piecing together a house, alone, in the West Virginia hills.
